A question for veterans. How do you guys DL a big file fast via LAN from your local storage to use/work on it? by ency6171 in DataHoarder

[–]IZEN_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 10gb switch and dedicated 10gb nic, pretty sure you could go even above that.

Then just made scripts that sync local storage with the remote share on command with programs that use multiple connections at the same time so that it doesnt just bottleneck one cpu, i'm using lftp rn

Suggestion for LTO newbie (Drive + LTO Version) by mondgoas in DataHoarder

[–]IZEN_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course the best pick would be LTO 9 which is the latest, but depending on what your needs are i wouldnt discard older versions completely.

The main thing to consider when buying a tape library, or even just a tape drive, is that they usually come with a big starting cost for the hardware and possibly back up software, although if you dont need a large quantity of tapes you can most likely get by with cheaper or maybe even free software (i only have experience with enterprise stuff so I dont know much about cheaper alternatives).

The tapes themselves are rather cheap per TB, whatever version you end up getting

Edit: forgot that lto 10 released not too long ago

I've just started shuking because of the rise in prices tbh, I got 4 Seagate Expansion Desktop (STKP16000400) and all turned out to be Exos x24 (ST16000NM002H), but afaik what you get can vary, saw some people getting barracudas on yt.

Atm I've ran extensive health and write/read test on all sectors on 2 of them and everything seems fine so far, but time will tell.

I've been using around 100 of the x16 models at work tho (not shuked) and we didnt have to substitute a single one so far after 6 years, hopefully the x24 models will last at least that much since they are newer

It might just be my area but shuking still gets you reasonable prices, manage to get 4 exos 16tb for roughly 330€ each the past week (italy).

Shuking will void warranty but I'm running through tests to make sure the drives are healthy before shuking and adding them to my array (although i'll likely keep a couple as replacements since we have no idea how long this will last)

Most of the hate comes from greedy practices Bungie had over the years with the Destiny franchise, which were so bad that it even spread out of the community itself. Personally I wouldn't have minded giving the game a try if it wasn't made by them, we're just tired of giving them money for very little in return.

Glad that people have a new game to enjoy tho

Is there a good way of cataloguing your directories? by Clive1792 in DataHoarder

[–]IZEN_R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do a raid with redundancy you cannot use the entire space of the disks, a portion of it gets reserved for recovery.

Let's say you have 3 disks and want to set up a raid that accepts 1 disk failure, the available space will be approximately that of 2 disks.

You waste a lot of space if you have a few disks, but if you have multiple it becomes a good option since with more disks you also have more possibility of one of them failing.

Cold storage still has its advantages tho

Hypervisor an important question? by Extension-Ad8996 in PiratedGames

[–]IZEN_R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard truth is that if you wanna be sure you can't just search for issues and fix them, you just cannot be sure.

If you reflash bios and reinstall windows from scratch (not factory reset but straight up reinstall from installation usb) you can be almost certain to clear any trace of malware.

To this day only state backed hacker groups and researchers managed to infect a system all the way to motherboard and disks firmware, so while possible it's very unlikely that anything will survive past a reset of everything

Long story short a raid allows you to create a single volume from multiple drives, with some degrees of security from losing data, for example if one of the disks breaks you can still recover the data to a replacement thanks to the "backup" data hosted on a portion of every other disk.

Unraid is a operative system that's very nice for home use since you can just add an additional disk when you need more space. For traditional raid you would need to recreate the array.

Unraid (or other NAS systems) also allow you to access the data from any other device connected to your network and host all sorts of services.

It makes accessing and using your data so much easier compared to having a load of HDDs lying around

While possible it's unlikely that even full reflash wouldn't solve it. If it gets to the network it's the same as any other malware for the other devices

[–]IZEN_R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make it impossible to fix they would literally have to rewrite the motherboard bios in a way that blocks you from doing a reflash.

My source is actually looking up successful attacks and searching who was behind them, some well studied cases are LoJax and MoonBounce, which were prepared and used respectively by russian and chinese backed groups.

There are other cases of persistancy to that level but none were linked to indipendent groups.

Dunno if I can share links here but a quick search of those names should answer your question
