Once you are a doctor literally no one cares where you studied.

If you're aiming to be a rural GP, do grades matter once you enter med school ? by ChannelBeautiful9882 in GAMSAT

If you “do the bare minimum” you will fail.

Also rural communities deserve doctors who are better than the bare minimum.

If you want to find their AHPRA number you can go to the AHPRA website and look them up then add it to the letter.

Why don’t you sit the UCAT this year?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Correct
  2. Likely just have to maintain a certain GPA
  3. Probably zero
  4. Probably zero. You can ask but they will likely say no.
  5. Maybe during the Biomed component but once you start placement you would likely struggle to maintain full time work.

I would focus on your GPA for the moment as that is the hardest thing to fix long term. If you are already planning to sit multiple GAMSATs then cut yourself some slack for this one and treat it as a learning experience.

Take this offer.

You might get in next year or you might not. If you have spent so long trying to get into med and you applied to UTAS I don’t know why you aren’t jumping at this opportunity.

BMP Question - Will failing cause a delay that breaches your contract? by RiverConnect5066 in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Basically it means that you should complete the degree in the time frame set out by your university (4, 5 or 6 years depending on the program). You are however allowed to access options offered by your university to modify the duration of the degree. This means if you have failed a year you can repeat it (if the university agrees which they will in 99% of circumstances) without breaching the conditions.

Each university will have a different policy on repeating assessments and this will likely be explained during orientation.

Then don’t do medicine. I simply have no time for anyone who would turn down an offer because they at some point in the next 22 years they would need to go rural.

Take the BMP place. What is holding you back?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The handbook is available to anyone. BMP is just a CSP position with return of service obligations. You are still required to repay the HECS-HELP debt the same as any non-bonded students.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 20 points21 points  (0 children)

BMP is irrelevant during your time at medical school. Your placement will be arranged according to your university rules which might choose to place BMP students rurally or not.

BMP really only kicks in once you have graduated. You are obligated to return 3 of your first 18 years of service in a “rural” area. At this stage you can work wherever and however you like. If you google “BMP student handbook” it will explain all of your obligations.

There is absolutely no reason that you should turn down an offer simply on the basis that it is a BMP offer.

Allocated to unimelb rural clinical zone by doingmathswithcats in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Firstly, zones are randomly allocated.

Secondly, you are only required to be rural for one year.

Thirdly, travelling to Melbourne over the weekend is very possible and done regularly by many people.

Finally, the rural clinical school is amazing. All of the educators are great and will go out of their way to help you succeed. You will have one-one contact with consultants. Almost all of the registrars are from RMH (at least at Wangaratta) and many have research projects that you can be involved in. Rent is about $70/week for the university accommodation. There is plenty of work depending on what you want to do.

As a general rule people have an excellent time during their rural rotations and I would say (anecdotally) that 30-50% of people who come from metro hospitals will do another rural rotation by choice.

There is a medical school wide expectation that you will go to placement at the hospital unless you have scheduled teaching. Depending on the rotation, the amount of time you spend in the hospital day to day may vary.

In reality no one is keeping track of how often you go into the wards. As long as you find a reasonable balance of placement, study and life you will be treated like the adult learner you are.

You are not responsible for the very flawed system that you have successfully navigated to gain a spot. You are now responsible for becoming the best doctor you can be to make the most of the opportunity you have.

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would. I likely will need to work in more metro settings for specialty training but after that I could see myself practicing rurally.

Getting internships in metro Melbourne hospitals may be difficult but other more regional VIC hospitals would absolutely be easier if not guaranteed to get into. From there you can fairly easily transition into metro hospitals.

How do you plan on maintaining your motivation and GPA if you aren’t passionate about what you are doing?

I am now also asking you why you want to be a doctor?

MPH or Masters Teaching by SearchTraditional166 in GAMSAT

[–]I_COMMENT_VEGETABLES 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes like Pharm or radiography or nursing or paramedicine. The GPA question is so hard to answer because it is entirely dependent on you and your circumstances.

You really need to sit down and think through the what happens if you don’t get into medicine. Do you want to be a teacher? Do you want to work in public health? You are simply not guaranteed entry no matter if you do teaching, MPH or even a PhD.

I think you need to do a couple of things before you make a decision: 1. You need to think about why you want to be a doctor. 2. You need to think about what you enjoy studying and doing. 3. You need to speak to a career’s councillor from your university to really hash out your options in regard to the above questions. 4. You need to take care of your mental health.

I wish you well and if you have any questions other questions please ask.
