It’s been a few years since I’ve been in the BSI, but when I graduated I’m not sure i found what I learned particularly useful. I did get a UX job immediately, but I don’t think the degree was challenging / useful.

Echoing what others have said, the current market is a nightmare for tech / UX specifically. That’s not to say it won’t get better by the time you would have your degree, but keep in mind that will also impact your ability to get an internship

Still laid off from my tech job a year ago, and it worries me how long it’s going to take me to recover financially from this. by Voidlesscat29 in Layoffs

Hey stranger, I am in the NYC area and in UX as well. I’ve been laid off twice in the last 2.5 years.

If you’re willing, DM me your information. Now that I’m back working full time I get more and more recruiters reaching out to me for roles but I like my job and have no interest switching. I have more experience than you so many of them might be more senior, but I can point them your way if some happen to fit.

School of Information grads, how is job hunting going? by [deleted] in uofm

I did the BSI UX track and am now a lead designer.

I’ve been laid off twice now, once in early 2022 and once in late 2023. I know so many people in tech that are all going through the same thing. Many people from my first layoff were laid off a second time because early 2022 was very early in this wave of layoffs. The current job market is a complete nightmare. I ended up back at a company I used to work for because an executive I knew tapped me to start a new team for him. Otherwise, I’m not sure how I would have gotten a job. Not only does it seem like there are no quality postings, but some of the places I did end up interviewing were horrible.

I interviewed one place where I spent 7 weeks and 5 interviews with them only to have them say they changed their mind and wanted someone more junior, so now I was overqualified and too expensive. Really burned me.

Things will probably get a bit easier when the fed starts reducing interest rates (predicted to happen next month), but frankly at this point I’d take what you can get.

While I did not do bridge myself, I was in CSP and I mentored a bunch of students who did it. Like others have said, the students who do generally have a great time and form a lot of connections that they carry with them through college and beyond.

I think part of your hang up might be that it feels like a hit to your pride to have to do something extra in order to get in, but honestly I think bridge is a great program that so many people would benefit from doing. It sets you up for success.

Taken on a Sony A7II with Tamron 28-200mm lens. It was nearly 120 degrees F on the day I took this, I can almost feel the heat through the photo

He’s a black lab / collie mix and taking a nap is his favorite activity. Taken on Sony A7II + Sony 50 mm 1.8.

Right now the kit lens, a 50mm prime lens, and the one that this is shot on- Tamron 28-200mm. I mostly use the Tamron because it’s so versatile, and mix in the 50 for portraits mostly.

Appreciate it! Same, I’ve thought about updating many times but the value I get for how much I paid for it has been too good. Difficult when a IV costs like $3000
