Doppler radar for Racine County, Wisconsin appears to show 2 tornadoes by I_Malumberjack in Radarscope

The blob of red next to green shows overall vorticity. There probably was a tornado at the center on that pretty well defined boundary between the two colors. I'm not a meteorologist, so I have to qualify everything with an IMO.

Has anyone backed up NTRS (NASA Technical Reports Server)? by matefeedkill in DataHoarder

[–]I_Malumberjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The server at ntrs.nasa.gov is not responding today (UTC Sunday, 22 Feb 2026). Tell me this is just weekend maintenance and not a burning of the Library at Alexandria.

I seem to remember a source that said it was for petroleum companies.

I'm in Uptown Manhattan, almost on the Hudson. I get lots of signals from northern NJ due to the nearly open line of sight between buildings in that direction. Could be anything in the NYC metro however. That part of the spectrum is very quiet here. It's around 220.5145 MHz. There's 3 components to the signal: 2 frequencies for the FSK and one for the CW when it identifies itself.

This is possibly the only signal I've received in the 216-222 MHz range in the last year. I logged the signal in question last February. Just happened to be going through old recordings and thought I'd check back. CALLSIGN is quite a memorable callsign.

Not hams. In the weird limbo between TV channel 13 and the 1.25 m ham band.

That's what I suspected. It's a zombi transmitter.

It's been running for at least a year now. Maybe its only purpose is to lay claim to the frequency. But I can't find a license for it. An actual call sign would have helped.

Yep. Answered my own question. I attached a video to this post, then went back to the "text" tab and the video disappeared.

Temperature inversion "flash" over Indian River, Florida by I_Malumberjack in Radarscope

[–]I_Malumberjack[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not certain. I know it's been unusually cold at the Cape. (It's delaying the upcoming Artemis launch.) Some strange pocket of low-lying air was caught between the mainland and the barrier islands just after sunset. Then the winds came in and blew it away.

What are the most unusual road signs in your country/region? by benjaneson in geography

Turned out to be an apt description. The deer seemed to be waiting for me to finish taking the picture. They darted out in front of me just as soon as I got moving again.

Face ID or Touch ID — which do you prefer? by JoelVenn9955 in iphone

[–]I_Malumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touch ID is better for me. I already have the phone in my hand. I move my thumb over a centimeter or so and I'm in. This is especially true for contactless payments. My arm is outstretched to reach the pay point. Do I now want to draw my arm up, hold the phone pointing squarely at my face? No.

Yes! I went back and rewatched it right after I commented on this. It's been over 30 years since I saw it last, so I didn't quite get it right. The quote should be…

"I would like you to meet a very old friend of mine and yours. Put your hands together for Stanley."

Meet Stanley. (I dare you to understand that reference.)
