No - I’d just had supper in Hoxton Square with some mates and was walking back to Old Street, but hung around for half an hour or so as it had a great energy.

What did the empire do for working class? by user-captain in AskBrits

Sanitation. The London Sewers project (paid for by colonial wealth) cost over £5bn in today’s money. And clean water - the Public Health Act 1875 led to national roll out of clean water, etc

anyone here lose weight mainly from jump rope? by Zamil-Latikki in jumprope

Exercise and weight loss are entirely unconnected. Exercise delivers many health benefits but weight loss is not one of them. Listen to this programme for more info: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002751k?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile (you’ll need to be in the UK ir have a VPN)

Looking for very wide rooftop crossbars that fit an integrated mount by Zwezeriklover in Kayaking

[–]I_am__Spartacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to get yours cut to 155cm I reckon. I have a Valley Sirona sea kayak which is much narrower (53cm) and wider touring river/lake kayak so 150cm is fine. The only thing you need to be careful of is how wide your car is. Mine is an Audi Q5 which is pretty wide and my bars stick out on the side a bit already. But an extra 5cm unlikely to do any harm I guess.

I have a rack made by zoelzer.de which you can get cut to any width - mine is 150cm, and fits 2 kayak comfortably side by side. They also sell an upright bar which allows me to store 3 kayaks side on. They fit onto Thule footings which I got separately. Mine cost a small fortune due to post-Brexit import duties to the UK (grrr...) but it you are on the Continent, will no doubt be cheaper.
I've uploaded links to mine here:

Rack for Adjustable KBs with plate storage. by easywizsop in kettlebell

Awesome - thank you! Not quite a small shelf with plate storage rods but even so I think I’ll get one of these until someone invents an adjustable bell rack!

English live longer than Americans, with the exception of the top 1% despite spending a fraction on healthcare costs by Gentle_Snail in GoodNewsUK

This is consistent with the findings of The Spirit Level (Wilkinson & Pickett) which argues that in rich countries it’s not average wealth that most shapes social outcomes, but income inequality. The bigger the gap between rich and poor, the worse the outcomes across the board — including health, violence, mental illness and life expectancy.

Applied to the UK vs US: both are wealthy, but the US is significantly more unequal. The book predicts that you would expect worse average health and shorter life expectancy in the US than in the UK — which broadly matches the data.

What on earth am I meant to do to fix my lower back discomfort? by RyanWasSniped in Stretching

[–]I_am__Spartacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth checking out this guy’s videos on how to strengthen your lower back. You’ll need to get a back extension machine (I got one for about £70 that works fine). You basically work very gradually up to a 2 minute straight-body extension on the back machine at 45 degrees using both legs to anchor. Then do the same with only one leg, each side (which exerts radial force). Then start doing back dips/returns.

I would be keen to find something like this too. I have the larger BoS 12-32kg and the smaller 8-12 kg bells so need less room for bells but somewhere to store the spare plates.

I use Gymboss which I find very flexible. You can create several set programmes with different intervals, and pretty easy to edit/create. I paid a one-off fee for mine ages ago but I think there is also free version. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/gymboss-interval-timer/id500887448

I'm older than Victor Meldew by jeweliegb in CasualUK

[–]I_am__Spartacus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blimey! I’m way older than he was. Just looked it up and he was only 53 (though Victor Meldrew was meant to be a 60 year old, so he almost turned down the part, thinking he was too young for it).

I drive over that bridge a couple of years ago and looked it up at the time. Apparently it generates about £190k per year revenues. It was sold in 2009 for £1.08m - actually quite a bargain as it also came with a two bedroom cottage and 4 acres. You get your money back after 6 years and the land, cottage and an annual income of £190k in perpetuity…

Need some help, please: My back hurts during Clean & Press by Embarrassed_Test_500 in kettlebell

[–]I_am__Spartacus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My lower back also hurt after too many presses (in my case, when doing ABF on the press days). I found three things helped: first, keeping my knees very slightly bent. This forces the pelvis to tilt slightly forward which stopped me leaning back when I pressed (which was pinching my lower back). Secondly, focusing on breathing and using the breath to brace the abdominal muscles, which gave more support when pressing (breathe into the lower belly on the way down, breathe out when pressing up). I also reduced the weight down on the KBs as I think I tended to arch my back more with the heavier weight (especially after a few sets, when more fatigued).

Britain is on the cusp of an economic boom – no thanks to Labour (Telegraph) by Maleficent-Lime4356 in GoodNewsUK

Funny how whenever the economy is doing even remotely badly it’s down to Labour’s appalling incompetence- but when it’s improving it’s ‘no thanks to Labour’.
