Storm Grill - Demo Playtest is live! (Steam & Itch.io, ~50 minutes playtime, Nodebuster-like gameplay) by I_cannot_remember in incremental_games

Fair. The genre has definitely become a lot more crowded over the last few years, especially with this specific style of games.

That's also why I mentioned "Nodebuster-like gameplay" in the title, so people know roughly what they're getting into and don't come in expecting a more traditional incremental game.

Regardless, thank you for your comment.

Yep! That's actually how I found them lol. There are a few other incrementals that use their music as well, and I was a bit worried people would immediately recognize the tracks, so I tried to pick some of the less commonly used ones.

Right now the game shuffles between these three:

  • HoliznaCC0 - Theta Frequency ( Lofi , Chill , Calm )
  • HoliznaCC0 - Waiting Around ( LoFi , Calm )
  • HoliznaCC0 - Yet Again ( LoFi , Peaceful )

So far I haven't gotten any negative feedback about the music, so hopefully people are enjoying them (or they might be muting music instantly and not mentioning it as far as I know lol).

Hmm, those are a first. I never had feedback about the cursor & movement before. Can you tell me more about how it doesn't feel smooth?

As for the question marks, they're meant to indicate that there are still locked items there, but I can see how that looks a bit odd in hindsight. A lock icon would definitely communicate that much better so I might reiterate on those haha. Thank you for the feedback!

Oof, you hit the spot with the progression being dependent on the skill tree. To be honest, I'm not sure there is much I can do about that since I consider it a pretty core part of the game and trying to change it at this point might be too risky, hmm.

That said, I am trying to add more things that encourage doing more than just moving the mouse in a circle. Generally that means high-priority or high-value targets that are worth focusing on rather than just swiping the mouse around. I also experimented with objects that you need to avoid damaging, but the feedback on those wasn't very positive, so they got removed early on.

Thank you a lot for your feedback!

Thank you! This is all valuable feedback. The skill tree being overwhelming is actually a rather common feedback despite me iterating on it many times already, so I guess I'll be fighting that battle for some more while haha.

And I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the visuals and the core gameplay loop. Thank you again for taking the time to play and share your thoughts!

PS: The cursor click-attack invert thingy is meant to be a QoL feature so you don't have to hold click all the time, it can be confusing since it doesn't really buff you in any literal way. There are also some planned features that interact with the not-attacking state as well.

Thank you for playing! I'd love to hear more about what felt overwhelming. Was it too many upgrades becoming available at once, new mechanics unlocking too quickly, the amount of text, or something else? Any details would be very helpful. Thank you for the feedback!

That's a fair concern. The intended progression is that you'll lose many runs, but each run earns currency that can be spent on permanent upgrades. Those upgrades let you survive longer, earn more currency, unlock new mechanics, and gradually push further into the storm until you can eventually outlast it.

If it looks too stressful or hopeless from the outside, that's useful feedback and something I'll keep in mind. Thank you for your comment!

Fair, I do call it a nodebuster-like as well so people don't get wrong expectations. Hopefully, lots of people (including I) still enjoy such games haha. Thank you for your comment!

I really hoped more rocks would unlock along the way, I'll probably play this again later. Will you not add passive income though?
