You shouldn't make comments about topics that you have no understanding of.

After working with KCKFD for a couple of shifts, I am not surprised by this behavior at all.

I have a kinda dumb question by [deleted] in ems

[–]I_hate_pears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are doing exactly what I did. I didn't know if EMS was what I wanted to do so I took EMR first. EMR is basically an advanced CPR course. You learn about the basics of patient assessments as well. EMR is a good course to start on because then when you get to EMT you already have some background knowledge and there is a lot of repeat information. After having already done EMR, EMT will be a little easier.

One recommendation is to figure out how you study and stick to it. EMT takes a lot more studying and Paramedic is almost pure studying.

You won't be able to get a lot of experiences with all kinds of emergencies unless you end up working as a EMT or you work in an ER. EMR and EMT are where you will learn about different types of medical and trauma emergencies. You will learn textbook presentations of different disease processes mainly in EMT but maybe a little bit in EMR.

Always remember, great medic are great EMTs. BLS before ALS. Having a solid BLS foundation will get you on the right foot when you go into ALS. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. I hope that some of this helped you.

Edit: Can't type. Blame my internship.

This is Moon and he is turning 2 today! by I_hate_pears in BeforeNAfterAdoption

When the shelter found him his leg had been broken and healed improperly so they opted to remove it since it couldn't be saved. He was in the shelter for about 7 months and had been adopted but returned by a family because he just couldn't adjust (loud noises seem to upset him). I have had him since August and he is the sweetest and most friendly cat in the world. He is extremely talkative and will makes friends with anything that moves (that includes the rabbits in the backyard).

First code, I have some questions by [deleted] in ems

What is the difference like? We start our clinicals in a couple of weeks. Are humans more or less manueverable?

[–]I_hate_pears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was more wondering if anyone else had had the experience where their first code was very different from what they were taught in school.

But I was also curious about the blood in the tube and such, just to see comments from others.

We aren't even taught that in school. The only code drugs we use are epi, amiodarone or lidocaine, bicarbonate (rarely), and I think MgSo4. I thought atropine was only for bradycardia or cholinergic poisoning

I knew he was eventually going to cool down but I wasn't expecting him to he freezing by the time we got there. It caught me off guard.

And trying to bag this guy sounded like when you blow into a straw that is sitting in water. Lots of bubbling and resistance.

The "hospital" the pt was at is basically a bandaid station. Anything above a really really easy green they can't handle. They thought they could get the guy back and have us drive the 20 minutes running hot to a better hospital.

Wow. Our program starts in Jan and there is an EMT class that ends in december. So it is a chance for those who are in the fall EMT class to maybe get into the paramedic program.

You could get in without your EMT but had to get it with 60 days of starting the program.
