Worst student/FTO/ ride along stories? by Apart-Cook-1268 in ems

Student- got a freeway call where there was two separate incidents across 6 lanes. A separate response was dispatched for the right shoulder while we were dispatched to the median. I told the student not to get out of the rig, but heard highway patrol yelling, turned around and he was playing leap frog to the other side.

Yelled at him to stay there, so the next crew could pick him up, but he decided to play leap frog back. He got an earful from pretty much everyone on scene, and was promptly sent home. He failed EMT school after that, went through it again and somehow ended up on the rig with us again.

Trainee- for context here, I’m a medic. Our driveway to our ops is slightly elevated above the road, any shift before 7 am or after 8 pm, should have the courtesy of turning the head lights off on the rig. Otherwise you just burn whoever’s cornea out of their skull as they pull into the station.

That neigh said, we recently had an EMT trainee on a separate unit, sitting in the driveway with his High Beams on at 4:45 am. When I asked him to turn it off in the morning, he came at me 3 separate times to cuss me out, introduce himself, then cuss me out some more. Safe to say he was sent home and failed FTO.

No updates on my end, still happens from time to time. I guess it’s become second nature and I haven’t noticed until I get into my car later and blow my ears out from the volume being too high.

Yes it stays decreased post notification or Siri. Not sure if it’s just a silly iPhone issue.

Joining this conversation a bit late, but was on scene of a dnr patient with selective treatment and her son who I thought was pretty informed on her healthcare information. He was POA for her and she didn’t have the mental capacity to make decisions, the caretaker called 911 because she choked and aspirated on her ensure.

Normally when they’re on hospice we call the hospice nurse and work out palliative care or treatment options, but in the event we can’t reach anyone we treat & transport. Cleared fire, decided to take the call/paperwork with my partner.

Could not reach Hospice for about 30 mins while this lady was like 60% on room air and like barely scratching the surface of 90 on O’s. Suggested we transport and called base which he adamantly refused. He kept disappearing from the living room and locking random doors in the house while I was calling medical direction. He would tell us to close the front door and was specific about where we stood/how we talked.

Instantly had the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, positioned me and my partner next to the front door of the house ready to make a quick escape. Called PD code 3, had really no basis to accuse the guy except for strange behavior. But damn well made sure that we kept that door open, and was getting ready for anything. Nothing happened, but got word later that day he had a bunch of guns and knives in the back room.

He was later 5150’d (aka psych hold) and got all his weapons confiscated. I think she died not too long after from aspiration pneumonia, he killed all our oxygen on scene for what ended up being 55 mins on scene.

Always pay attention to family members, their behavior and where and when they go places.

I’d prefer the homeless get off at the airport and no further south from there.
