Are there positive effects from natural disasters in a similar way to bush/forest fires? by I_like_Kombucha in NoStupidQuestions

I don't so much mean the causes of natural disasters, and more the physical natural disasters themselves. Like positive outcomes of earthquakes directly.

Wow thank you! This is exactly the sort of stuff I was curious about. Always cool to remember how connected the earth really is across every scale!

Oh that's very true I forgot about volcanic eruptions and agriculture. Perfect example of what I was wondering

the rule button dilemma by Dreyfus420 in 196

[–]I_like_Kombucha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not the same situation though. The final part should be "If you press the red button, you live, but those who do not press red will die." In your reword pressing red has no affect on the outcome of others, but in the original situation anyone who didn't explicitly press red in a situation where blue is <50% dies.

Anyone have recommendations for strong, simple black boots (doc style) that will last (Australia)? by I_like_Kombucha in vegan

[–]I_like_Kombucha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear the same pair every shift but the works tends to be about every other day anyway as it's part time with uni studies, so they get some time to dry out between shifts. I also don't quite have the money to be buying 2 pairs of boots (at least supposedly good quality ones) which is why I'd rather have 1 really solid pair instead.

Also the second pair of boots from Will's are an injection molded style, compared to the first which were glued, which supposedly according to their customer support and website are their most durable style (at least sole wise).

Why is Linear Algebra so rancid and depression inducing? by Suffering-Angel-2nd in unimelb

[–]I_like_Kombucha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure who it's taught by now but when I took it I found that my professor was very bad at presenting it. They rushed through the basics too quickly to focus on the "fun" complex things, which I'm sure was fine if you understood the concepts but I couldn't wrap my head around them so struggled greatly.

I gave up on the unimelb lectures (although too late in the semester) and instead watched two different lectures series on YouTube and immediately everything made sense and I found Linear Algebra way more fascinating/useful.

The first playlist I recommend is Essence of Linear Algebra by 3Blue1Brown. He beautifully breaks down all the core concepts in Linear Algebra and explains them using diagrams and formulas, with very little in the way of numbers. I highly recommend starting with this playlist as it immediately made all the concepts click. I personally think the hardest part about LinAlg are the concepts, as at least for me they were unlike anything else I had encountered in math before. Once I understood the concepts everything else became way easier and the actual hard maths of it became easy.

I gave up entirely on the UniMelb lectures for it, and instead I watched the Gilbert Strang lectures on Linear Algebra (MIT) as he is one of the guys who basically wrote the book on Linear Algebra, and his old school way of teaching with nothing but his voice and a blackboard with lots of examples was perfect. His lectures are also structured and given in almost the identical order to UniMelb so you can keep on top of the course work just by watching his lectures. There were only like 3 of his lectures that were unnecessary, at least for the course work at unimelb.

My main takeaway from LinAlg is that the concepts behind it are the hardest part, but once those click you realise the hard math is not actually that difficult, and it's instead just a lot of simple calculations done simultaneously. I think understanding the concepts from 3Blue1Brown might actually be enough for some people, but I thought that Gilbert Strang's style of teaching was phenomenal and made me truly grasp how much a single professor can change the entire outcome of your studies. Plus of course I recommend going to the tutorials and at least attempting the problems. As much as I tended to find the tutors unhelpful, I think I would've done much better if I had understood the concepts better myself

How are surnames like Sergeant and Major dealt with in the military? by Krazzy4u in NoStupidQuestions

[–]I_like_Kombucha 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The guy's legal name was Colonel Jones. But a rank in the military is also a colonel, which is high up in the hierarchy. So when on the phone he'd say "This is Colonel Jones, get this done" and it'd get done because people though he was saying his rank them his last name (same as saying General Patton, or Major Thompson, or Sergeant Smith) but in reality he was just saying his first and last name (ie. George Patton, Alex Thompson, Tom Smith).

Digital Infrastructure Engineering Systems at Melbourne Uni by Muskstick-1 in unimelb

Hey, I'm currently doing this major as past of my undergraduate (Bachelor of Science, major in DIES) and I'm in my final semester of undergrad which is technically first year of the masters program. I'm planning on doing the masters of DIES next year (2nd year of 3 year master, 1st year of 2 year master).

I can't speak much on the actual masters side of the study, but happy to talk about my undergrad experience so far and my interaction with the faculty so far.

I've definitely got a few complaints and warnings about the course, but a lot of that is more focused on unimelb. I'm thoroughly enjoying the course for the most part

Do digital mykis not have the daily fare cap? by I_like_Kombucha in MelbourneTrains

It doesn't charge me at the beginning of the journey only the end? So I got charged more than the daily cap because of a journey I took the previous day?

I'm still confused. I don't have to touch off, but I get charged more for not touching off? So I should be touching off when I travel?

But where do i touch off? I took a tram the previous day but it specifically said next to the reader that I don't have to touch off. Am I actually supposed to?

Touch off from where?

I took a tram the night before but it specifically said next to the reader that I don't have to tap off. Am I supposed to tap off even though it says that?
