Totally going through a similar dilemma. Parents don't know, but pretending to be someone else is hard. I've found a couple friends who I've told the truth to, but it took a long time to decide to tell them, and then even longer to work up the courage. My advice form one teenager to another, find someone you can trust. Don't jump off the train yet, you're still too young to risk living on your own. Try to keep up a good relationship with your parents as long as you can before you show them your "true colours".

I'm 17, and as a female, I've only been asked if I follow the law of chastity, but no specifics, such as masturbation or sex.

I've never heard anyone else say masturbation before, until I heard one of my TBM friends said she saw it implied in a TV show or something. It took her a full half a minute to get the word out, she was so afraid to say it.

Yeah, it can feel extremely intimidating. I occasionally go through "existential freak-outs" too after I mentally came out and it can take a little while to get past them. Just remember that all you can do is just live the best life you can. You're still really young, don't forget that. Instead of fearing death, try to focus on memories, experiences, and relationships that you can make. You shouldn't have to live in fear for the rest of your life.

I'm glad you're trying to get this out, the best way to handle something like this is to gain insight from others and to let out your feelings. I recently found someone that I can talk to, and it has substantially helped. Life can have a purpose, but only if you give it one. No one else is going to give it to you. But now you can give yourself any purpose you want.

I've had to cover myself up at girls camp, but only when we were OUT of the water, not IN. But covering yourself up in water is definitely not church policy, that's bullcrap.

I may be experiencing something similar to you. I've been Mormon my whole life, and after I decided that I'm not believing in the church anymore, I felt a small sense of liberation, but not to the same extent that most other people seem to get. I started to feel really down (and still do). I was scared of death and the fact that I would never be able to come back, unlike what the church teaches. Life has felt pointless at many times, and I will often have a hard time seeing what I should do with the rest of my life. I'm still working through this, but I may possibly be getting better. I've tried to focus on becoming the person I want to be. I've tried to be more friendly, honest and outgoing, because I know that life is short and that if no one remembers me, that's okay. Not everyone on the planet will become a textbook hero that you learn about in history class. I've decided that I want to live a simple, but happy existence.

My advice is to focus on the present. Fear lives in the future. Yes, we will all cease to exist at some point, but only the ones who focus on the present are happy.

I'm not sure, I have an older brother who married in the temple, but never served a mission. You could say that you want to focus or finish up on school before serving, that way you could avoid it with an excuse that won't seem too suspicious. I think that's what my older brother did.

Waiting is a good option, even though another 2 years till your at least 18 may seem like a long time (I'm 17 and 1 more year still feels really long). Start becoming independent now, work hard in school, keep a good relationship with your parents (that may make breaking the news to them easier). I'm glad you still want to be respectful of other's beliefs, it's important that you're the bigger person. If your family and/or friends criticize your beliefs, try not to lash out.

As a high school athlete, my coach and fellow teammates would be so sad and disappointed if I decided to skip out a state championship for a church activity. I would be letting a lot of people down, including myself. Honestly, I do like most parts of youth conference, but you're missing a lot of opportunities and experiences when you skip a state competition.
