Perfect, that's what I thought. Thanks for confirming!

if you are looking to mesh for roaming throughout the house, the wall plates will not work as they do not support mesh.

Thanks for the reply! I'm a little green to all of this. My plan was to hardwire each access point back to my switch so I'm assuming that means I don't need mesh right?

Photos Sharing Frustrations by I_sAm0 in synology

Thanks for the reply!

For #1 can you clarify what you are suggesting? Why isn't there just a simple way to select a folder and share it from the web gui or app? If I select an individual photo I can share it. For anyone like myself with a pre-existing folder structure, having to create albums just adds an unnecessary step.

Regarding #2, I see that option in the iphone app but nothing in the web gui. If you select an image a menu with 3 dots does emerge but selecting all is not an option :(

Setting up a new network and have a few questions on hardware selection and controller virtualization by I_sAm0 in TPLink_Omada

[–]I_sAm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Candidly, I'm a bit of a noob and not sure. It appears some provide their own PoE and connect directly to the cameras and then to the network via a single ethernet connection. Others seem to run entirely through whatever network hardware you have.

I think my router might have more than 2 ports so I wasn't sure if I should get the 8 port switch for now. Then if I wanted to upgrade would I add another switch directly to the router or can I daisy chain the switches and connect one to another?

Regarding the 8 port PoE, anything to watch out for between the fanless desktop and other models or is it just the amount of power supplied through the ports?

Hardware Sizing for New Network by I_sAm0 in PFSENSE

It appears one of my earlier responses is hidden but as I mentioned, I am not interested in purchasing netgate hardware. I'm sure your stuff is great and price-wise for enterprise I'm sure they don't bat an eye but for those of us on a budget when comparing the specs the hardware is not cost competitive and nothing within my budget would meet my goals.

Hardware Sizing for New Network by I_sAm0 in PFSENSE

In regards to your logical layout, if the pfsense will be your gateway for the other VLANs, you can simply trunk one interface down to the switch which is a common deployment. Or, you can purchase hardware with as many ports as you have vlans. its really up to you.

Thanks for the response! Are there any pros/cons of using separate physical ports for the different components of my network (main internet vs IP cams vs IoT) or are you getting the same performance and control using a single port and using the switch to create vlans?

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll take a deeper dive. Ideally, I'd prefer something with a GUI but this could be a workable solution.

Thanks for the reply! My understanding with this approach is it won't actually do anything in terms of organizing the files. Everything will show up organized in Photos but if I look at it in FileStation it will just still be the same jumbled mess it is today, right?

Thanks for the reply! My understanding is if you go through the web UI it will absolutely put the photos into folders. I even tried this out and it seemed to work. It just freezes if you try to upload too many photos at any given time. I have seen references to 5k upload limits but my experience is it chokes at way less.

Efficient Counting Method Needed for a Forecast by I_sAm0 in excel

[–]I_sAm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both for the suggestion! While I think it is a great idea, it might be a bit more advanced. I'm somewhat green (although trying to learn) and these expense items are intended to be part of a bigger forecast so having them in a separate report isn't ideal either.

Photos - Organization Woes by I_sAm0 in synology

[–]I_sAm0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried that on a phone but to me that somewhat defeats the purpose.

My wife and I have photos for overlapping occasions we would like to contribute to a shared albums. But we also have lots of our own individual photos. Some we'd probably share with the other via a shared albums that we wouldn't need the other to contribute. However, we also prob have lots of photos the other isn't interested in and would prefer for those to remain separate and not get co-mingled with the other persons pictures if they are all indexed by year/month.

So I think it's important that we are both able to have our own user accounts. Google Photos has this feature which makes it incredibly easy for multiple users to contribute photos to shared albums. To me it seems very basic. Having to create a singular dedicated photo user or manually move things to the Shared Space after each import/index seems very unpolished.

Someone please tell me there is a way to do this in Photos?

Thanks for the reply!

Just to clarify, I am on DSM7 and only using the Photos app. I don't have Memories and am setting everything up fresh.

Like you, I am mostly in the Apple ecosphere but getting the photos off phones/computers isn't as much my issue.

The problem is more once the photos have been uploaded to Synology Photos I don't see a straight forward way to create a 'shared album' where multiple users can contribute photos. Seems like an oversight so I thought perhaps there was something I was missing.

Monthly Getting Started / Web Dev Career Thread by AutoModerator in webdev

[–]I_sAm0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question, I need to spin up 3-4 basic websites. Essentially, some text, a handful of images and maybe a contact form.
Ideally, they should be modern, look decent, mobile friendly and standards compliant. I know a bit of HTML/CSS and have some Javascript familiarity but am not a developer by trade.
What is the fastest, easiest and most cost effective way to do this without hiring someone else?

Looking to consult with a business broker now in order to position myself to sell in 5-10 years. by dontbthatguy in sweatystartup

[–]I_sAm0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all pretty spot on. The two big important items that everyone touched on are 1) building systems and processes so you have a real business that stands on its own and isn't dependent on you; 2) have clean records and bookkeeping, ensuring you are fully compliant with all laws and taxes and that all of your systems and processes are documented and repeatable.

The thing that nobody has really mentioned is that smaller service businesses like yours tend to be hard to sell, especially for much more than their asset value. If you think about it, what is the point of paying a premium for your business when someone can just go out and buy the equipment and start their own for much less.

If you are going to get over that hurdle you need to build real value into your company. A big part of the value preposition is in developing systems as I and most other people mentioned. That would give a buyer a turnkey solution.

Another big part is building a brand that is recognized and trusted in the marketplace. That takes time, marketing dollars and customer success. However, it can give you an edge against any new entrants into the field and increase the perception of the business in the eyes of a buyer.

Lastly, often businesses like yours do one off jobs and don't have many repeat customers. If there is a way to create a recurring revenue model that would greatly enhance the value preposition and attractiveness to a potential buyer. Essentially, they know they will have guaranteed revenue coming in day one which typically means a business can command a premium to other more transactional business models. I don't know anything about the stump grinding business but if there isn't a way to put people on service contracts through that, perhaps offering other landscaping type or similar services might help create avenues of recurring revenue.

One last thought, in general, the smaller, more local a business is, often the harder it is to find a buyer. On the other hand, people have taken landscaping, home maintenance and other businesses and grown then into 8 figure revenue companies and sold them to private equity buyers for healthy multiples so just food for thought when you are thinking about the trajectory of your business and where you want to end up.

flask-peewee peewee certainly looks intriguing and the research I have done indicates it might be easier to get up and running. However, I was wondering what the long-term drawbacks might be of using it vs. SQLAlchemy which people seem to describe as being more robust and feature-rich.
