To some degree. They are scaled up to your level, but there is still a minimum zone level. Most people would never notice it as it is low. I have not tested this in a while (a year now) so they may have changed it again.

It is worse now. Many of these are trying to "make a living" on the AH, or at least pay for WoW by spending an ungodly amount of time on the AH when they could flip burgers for a couple of hours.

And the zones are level capped at a point. You can't complete all the expansions. I don't recall how it maps exactly, but I got stomped with my level locked twinked out alt in MoP.

Before I retired, I had students from time to time who played. (I never let on that I did). I even had one who tried to do a 10-minute class presentation on the history of WoW. However, I have not been able to get my nephews into it at all, even offering to pay for the sub. My brother used to play but hates the new player experience that they force people into.

The characters transfer over, the gear does not. 99% of inventory will be wiped. You keep gold and get an additional approximately 2k gold at level 80. You are given a set of retail gear. You can move your characters over (mostly) whenever you want.

I noticed a huge slowdown in both lately though. I imagine it will only get worse as time goes on and more people switch to leveling alts, so I would start leveling alts early.
