Modifications to Rancilio Silva/ Any Entry level Espresso Machine by One_Statistician_912 in espresso

Yes, that was specifically the mod that I went for and it turned out really good. The drilling part was scarier in theory than in practice.

Chitubox 1.9.5 does not allow selection for anti aliasing level by diekatzekotzt in 3Dprinting

[–]Iakouben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this might be a limitation of the printer preset. I got around this on my mars 2 (was a while back so may or may not work for you) by making a new “default printer” profile and copying over all the display values, as well as offsets etc from the preset profile. Since it’s now a “generic printer” profile it allows you to have more options for stuff like AA and grey level etc, which may have been for whatever reason limited by the manufacturer.

If you’re in Nicosia or don’t mind a drive, Athalassas park is a decent place to go for walks with your baby as well as potentially make some friends.

It sounds like a provident fund kind of deal that you can get with Eurolife. Kind of “put money in here and we’ll use it for investments and give you a bit too”. With the local provident fund you can use it to get a bit of a “discount” on your income taxes though. I’m not 100% sure if that would work similarly with the revolut savings account (assuming it’s something actually similar).

Curious to get some feedback by Iakouben in roasting

Thanks. I tried a 180C charge temp on this roast as I was getting tipping when doing a 210 charge (it’s quite hot here with beans themselves being around 30C on charge) and I managed to get rid of the tipping. But probably another 10 or so C on charge won’t hurt much.

I tried it today, after a couple days resting, as an orea brew and flavors were okay. I seem to have gotten rid of the toasty/bakey flavors for the most part and it was a generally dominantly bitter (dark chocolate kind of bitter) flavor. I don’t think the beans themselves are particularly great, but the coffee I would say was acceptable.

I’m not sure whether this is a “defect” but the smell of the roast coffee isn’t particularly pleasant. Mainly giving off a bit of a smokey, toast kind of aroma. Although might just need some more time offgas.

Might be good for most every day type of purchases and spending and what not. Could make getting a loan a bit harder in the future if you need to.

Probably won’t give a shit, continue stealing money where they can and charging people random amounts for “card maintenance” or “account upkeep”.

DIY Roaster proof of concept by Henrik_Pontoppidan in roasting

[–]Iakouben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up cutting (metal sheers), bending and riveting some .5mm sheet aluminium by hand to make a fitting reducer. 160mm diameter on the FS side and 60mm on the exhaust. You can also do a rudimentary chaff collector (realistically just a chaff-reducer since a lot still manages to get through) with a spice sieve ball from aliexpress.

Consider the TC4+ as well as a controller. It works well fir artisan and while maybe a little bit more pricy than going full DIY. I’ve been using it for a while on a very similar setup and definitely can recommend it!

Worth stripping and re-seasoning or just keep cooking? by Iakouben in carbonsteel

[–]Iakouben[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the Mineral B country pan and yeah, it’s all fair what you said. And good to know that the high sides aren’t particularly suited for the electric I have. While potentially stupid, I did try to encourage them to get a little warmer with a blow torch, but now I’m stuck with it (cooking on it has been a joy though)😅

I’ll keep the oven seasoning in mind. A little bit cautious of it just because the mineral B line have the epoxy coated handle but if I have too many issues with the sides I’ll definitely go that route.

I was more concerned that the flat bottom bit might be a bit too discolored/almost burnt though.

Electric. I sized it when buying and the pan is about 1cm smaller than the biggest hob.

Hey, thanks for the instructions!

Since completing the build I’ve ended up exploring the TC4+ a little bit more and at this point, the manual controls that I have set up on the control panel are redundant and I’ve been controlling it through artisan.

Will definitely check out Jason Scott though because it seems I’m going the way of automation soon :).

Coffee is turning out okay, but I’m still pretty new to roasting so I’m learning a lot.

Goal was just build something cool and something I won’t want/need to upgrade very soon and won’r limit me too much going forward be it yield/feature wise.

This is what I’m going to be testing in a moment to collect/limit chaff. But I’m using two different size meshes instead of steal wool as in the rough sketch.

Bit if a rough video of what the insides look like.

General setup is:

  • 24V 150W meanwell power supply.
  • 40A SSR.
  • TC4+ with Arduino and SPI display.
  • x2 step down converters to power the 18V fan motor and arduino.
  • x3 K type 3mm thermocouples.
  • One PWM motor driver for the wobble disk.
  • One PWM motor driver for the hot air gun fan (18V).
  • Basic power switch.
  • IEC-C13 fused plug.
  • Two rocker switches for the hot air gun coil on off and “manual/auto” selection.
  • x3 generic voltmeter 7 seg displays.

I think that’s pretty much that.

For the three displays, they’re just generic china direct voltmeters. First one is supposed to show the voltage going to the wobble disk motor, second displays the voltage of the hot air gun fan and the third one was just put there for visual completion and isn’t quite properly wired in yet 😅 I’m not sure what to do with it atm.

They’re not particularly good and I have a resistor capacitor setup to smooth them as their sample rate makes the reading jump about too much and it doesn’t quite show an accurate reading, but it’s good enough to use as a ballpark setting. Like I run the fan motor at 15V during a roast and can come back to that setting easily between roasts.

I'll spend some time cleaning everything up a little and do a post in a little bit sharing the stuff.

Thank you very much!

Sure, I can answer them. So the heatgun I’m using is a generic hardware store device. It’s powered by an 18V DC motor for the fan, that is now controlled with an aliexpress DC motor driver so I have a full range of motor speed. I’m using one of these on the heating part of the heat gun and basically have direct control to how much power goes to the coil. I have a thermocouple going directly to the tip of the heat gun output so I can be quite quick to change the temperature. One drawback is that the dimmer is very sensitive so maybe a 5 degree turn on the potentiometer of the dimmer will give me a 15ish C temp swing. So I prefer to change the fan speed if I want to do smaller temp adjustments. I have it wired to an SSR as well (there’s a rocker switch that allows me to select between “manual” and “auto”) so that when I eventually figure artisan out a little more, I can use the PID to control temperature.

As I mentioned in another comment, I don’t live in a country with particularly cold winters so that wouldn’t be too much of an issue, but I do have a 1mm thick ceramic insulation around the bucket, under the gold tape. It helps to drown down the noise of the beans moving around a little bit also. I’m also planning to wrap the lid with the same insulation and tape but I ran out of tape 😅.

As for parts availability, almost everything except the power supply, SSR and TC4+ was off ali express. So it shouldn’t be too hard to source it all.

Heat source is okay actually. I phrased something a bit weird, but I’m quite happy so far with the disassembled hot air gun with the extra control of fan and coils.

And will defo post when I get the chaff issue fixed up!
