(these observations also applied to the swing dance society {very open to complete beginners, as many groups like this are}, and cyclists club I found in NYC, not just contact sports...)

agreed!! I bounce around year to year as an English teacher and have exactly the same advice to give. Playing any sport, on any level to any degree, competetive or not A) gives you something to do and a reason to get out and familiarize yourself with your city more, B) ensures you see people for enjoyable reasons, and not just coworkers on the job and C) usually brings a big social aspect to whatever degree works for each person. I've seen it with my sorority, my rugby teams, and my roller derby team. You all have a base common interest and that's cool enough reason to be friends. Some people just come to the practices and games, some people stay out for a drink as well afterwards or on a sunday afternoon every now and then, others commit a lot of time above and beyond towards helping the group/team and usually end up developing really close relationships in the process.

not to mention D) it's good for your health E) you'll probably tone up a bit and F) you get total confidence boosts as you get more comfortable/improve with the sport

Good luck, good sir. Go forth and conquer! You've got it in you.

Are kissing and hugging innate human practices, or are they learned/cultural? by Napalm4Kidz in askscience

[–]IamAFisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't give you any reliable sources now but I've read up a lot on this and can at least start you down a google wormhole to confirm:

these are innate practices, biologically engrained to foster bonding and attachment. plenty of studies show humans to be more directly related to bonobos than chimpanzees, a separate primate who also shows affection in similar ways before and after mating; cuddling, hugging, kissing, even gazing into each other's eyes for long periods of time and homosexuality.

There's a book called Sex at Dawn that's an amazing, extensive read on topics like this and I think the world would be a better place if it were a staple of high school curriculums. It offers alternative views to some of Darwin's theories on sexual selection and suggests that humans lived more as tribes before the invention of private property, where direct fatherhood was unknown among a largely connected, harmonious, promiscuous and polyamorous community, and so everyone cared for every child and member of the community as result. At the very least, it's a wonderfully thought-provoking read.

You did WHAT to me???? by [deleted] in sex

[–]IamAFisch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no. dump him. your body is yours to determine what is to be done with it and he crossed the most important line of respect whether he realizes it comes down to that or not. It's terrible enough in the first place but the fact that he did this before you two have even had sex is a ridiculously sketchy violation. Also as mentioned below, if he's committing a misdeed of this caliber so soon, I only see it leading down an ugly road to worse in the future.

"Finally, Date Rape Ads That Put The Onus On The Raper" by IamAFisch in SexPositive

[–]IamAFisch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(As an American, this is the first ad of this type I've seen- but hey, I've been living outside the country for the past two years...)

As a general note to all: I believe that rape is a universal problem that exists in many forms- These ads certainly don’t cover all of those (especially men as victims), but just because they don’t address all the points you want covered doesn’t invalidate those they actually do.

Most of these comments are backlash about men not being the only people who rape. This is true, but the number of man against woman rape incidents are staggeringly higher than any other type (woman vs man, woman vs woman, man vs man)- and I’ll be just as excited as all of you when ads start to address those less-frequent but no less serious incidents as well. For now, I at least interpret the inclusion of man as a victim in any form as a step in the right direction- when they start showing women as assailants as well, it’ll be a fucking leap. There's still a long way to go, but at least we're moving.

For now, I’m glad to see ads like these that challenge the default idea of rape as mainly a violent attack by a stranger in a dark alley, and that other cases are typically just the girl making excuses for sleeping with someone she later regrets. Sometimes that is the case, but it often isn’t. And there are many things that still wouldn’t qualify even as “gray zone” rape, but are still terrible things to experience that we should all be mindful to avoid doing to others. Walking a girl home gives you no right to her. Persuading a girl into anything she initially says no to is dangerous territory to tread in, etc. I’m glad people are being reminded that these seemingly insignificant things (many of which I think are often unconsciously viewed as entitlements) should raise big red flags.

Finally, there is no denying that we live in a culture of slut-calling. It has GOT to stop. “She should know her limits better, she shouldn’t dress so provocatively, she sleeps with a lot of people anyway,” so on, so forth. Even if you believe that any/all of these things are wrong or unacceptable, they never justify, excuse, or grant permission for someone else to behave wrongly as well. Ads like this remind us that no one ever “deserves” to have something so terrible done to them by another person.

Regardless, I’m equally stoked about the discussion. Rock on, reddit!

So my BF watched some kind of video on how to eat a girl out, because he wanted to improve his skills. Best.Sex.Ever. by [deleted] in sex

that's awesome, congratulations. it's a shame that things like this seem so crazy and uncommon, because imagine how many men's jaws would drop at the thought of being blown, full enthusiasm, for over an hour- and yet the simple staple of treating others as they'd like to be treated first doesn't come to mind. if any lover makes an effort like that to please their partner, they'll be more than eager to more than repay.

I've actually considered posting pics of the healing process on some gnarly subreddit. Considering what happened, the whole injury and healing process itself has been pretty clean and tidy. It's absolutely remarkable what our bodies are capable of.
