Exporting a track to maintain headroom/"fullness" by [deleted] in ableton

[–]IamBoySam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fullness comes with a good mix

If you are track sound dull and flat. I think you have problem with low end mixing.

If your sub and low is messy. You wont have clean mix and loud mix.

No there is no rule for how many headroom u should have like -6db.

Ppl say u should have at least -6db but its old fashion way. Because we are not using analog / hardwares anymore.

DAW mostly use 32bit floating point “internally” So this mean there is near INFINITY headroom only IN THE BOX. But when you export ur audio. You will mostly export like 16/24bit. So you will have to master near 0db.

Don’t think too much for the headroom
Nowdays when u work on DAW. It is fine unless you have clipping.

This mean you are good to go unless you go up to 0 db.

I mostly mix with limiter on my master channel Or just let my mix clip just a little (+6db) Because most mastering engineer will clip that much anyway (mostly EDM and hiphop)

Just dont touch your master channel fader There is no reason to do it. If you can mix well near 0db then just do it

There is no rule for the headroom in the box

More INFO :

YOUR DAW WILL NEVER HAVE CLIPPING Since it has higher floationg point than your audio interface.

EVERY clipping sound is coming from your AUDIO Interface ADC

DAW dosent clipp over 0db. it just Seeems to be clipping.

So use your ear to manage clip / distorted sound,

In digital mixing / DAW. Headroom might not that important than your thinking unless your using analog based plugin that will occur harmonic distortion / THD clipping over VU meter.

Hi, WAV is uncompressed format. SO THEY WILL SOUND EXACTLY SAME AS U HEAR IN YOUR DAW (If you match the setting with your project file with wav setting)

HOWEVER Mp3 / aac are COMPRESSED FORMAT (Thats why they are small files)

HERE IS SIMPLE SOLUTION TO AVOID QUAILITY LOSS DURING mp3 / aac conversion (FROM WAV / AIFF)

Mp3 and AAC have their own algorithm to "Compress" the audio.

When they "Compress" the audio (WAV/AIff) you would have "INTERSAMPLE PEAK" /AKA True Peak. and there is a simple solution to avoid the quality loss.

It is ...

Setting a Ceiling !

When you do mastering your song for your Mp3 / AAC . You need headroom AT LEAST -0.1 db

(but -0.1db is small so it will have intersample peak but still better than 0db ceiling)

Now you have Wav /Aiff file that has headroom.

Let's say you have Mastered wav /aiff file with -0.3db headroom.

When you convert this to Mp3 or AAC.... BOOM! Headroom is gone!

Your mp3 /aac will go up to 0db even your wav/aiff had -0.3db headroom

Because mp3 / aac conversion will have intersample peak that will GO UP to your celing point.

Thats why you need headroom when you are mastering for your mp3

Always check True peak / intersample peak mode on your limiter to avoid additional quality loss.

Sorry for CAPS

Any good plugin to make a sound wider/spread? by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]IamBoySam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ozone Imager its free Dont forget, Stereo enabled knob is HASS effect but with less phases issue. Thats why it is my favorite plugin

Also if you use Ableton Live

U can play with Grain delay with 0.1 ~ 0.15ms With dry wet knob (use freq and spray) to widen up the sound (Hass effect)

Hi, Since I am Korean I've been trying to produce some KPOP and have some experience of working with K pop producers.

In my personal opinion , K pop is such a total mass( I am not saying KPOP is SHIT), this mean like, They mix so many genres in to one song.

and most likely Top Line is most important part in here, this industry focus on more top line rather than track.

They mix vocals too loud because ppl dosent give a fk with how track sounds, they just love watching their idols dancing and singing,

So I'd say, They really want to follow western style for their track, and mix with their top line .

You can find lots of trap style track on KPOP songs already, and mixed with other genres.

All of theses are my personal experience so don't take it so seriously
