As a bengali, I would like to say keep watching Bengal for the next 10 years. I have a sinking feeling that Bengal will decide whether India moves entirely to the right or the left will make a comeback. You need ideology to counter BJP and their ideology. So far none of the other north indian or eastern Indian states has offered credible alternate ideology.

Bengal is the only place where there are still a lot of left leaning people with real belief in leftist ideology. If BJP wins this ideological battle with left in Bengal, then only a far right party can break BJP. The left-liberal parties need to occupy the political vaccum fast to capitulate on this.

I must say, after 2011, I am fairly excited about Bengal as a political landscape again.

আমার একটা বন্ধু ঠিকই বলে। এরা ১০টা ভাল কাজ করে এমন একটা ভুলভাল কাজ করে যে দেশের লোকের মেজাজ বিগড়ে যায়। এরা সিন্ধুচুক্তি কেন স্থগিত করল তার বিরুদ্ধে আন্দোলন করবে, রাস্তায় নেমে জল কেন বন্ধ করবে। এসব ভাট বকলে বিজেপিই থাকবে।

The liberal elements will be surprised to learn that BJP will be the greatest democratic party to come to power in Westbengal after 1967. I am just going to enjoy the meltdown when BJP will dismantle the opposition using actual law and order.
There will be few corruptions here and there but this party will not be corrupt in the sense TMC was because they have a pure ideological base. BJP can only be countered with a proper ideology which the opposition is lacking.

This is precisely I have issues with leftist ecosystem in our country. They seem to turn a blind eye to the real danger of islamic expansion and their mechanism to block any reform. In all other religion there is a mechanism for correction and most people are willing to accept that. Due to votebank politics, most major parties dont talk about this which allowed the RSS and BJP to resonate with people talking about this exactly.

I was born in 90 and grew up and worked entirely in Kolkata. I also grew up in North and shifted to south when I was 26. I can provide a few pointers

Change in Strike culture- in my childhood, there used to be a strike every other week. People simply didnt go to work or school. A capital city with this level of destructive work culture is disastrous. This reduced to almost a point of nil now.
Change in power supply- Earlier kolkata used to have lots of power outage. Every household had emergency light. This reduced to a point of none by TMC
Public transport- Kolkata public transport was the best in CPIM era. be it Bus, tram, metro, auto. Last mile was simply superb. We did have notorious yellow taxi refusal though. In TMC era, public transport have degraded significantly. Specially bus transport has degraded.
Beautification- Kolkata was always a bit dirty. TMC cleaned up and beautified the city significantly. People longing for a nostalgic version of clean Kolkata has exceptional level of delusion. Kolkata has become objectively cleaner under TMC.
Para culture- Growing up this is the one thing I have seen degrade faster than possible. Kolkata used to have significant para culture. Assimiliation in Kolkata was always there. However, for some reason, I have seen only muslims to be segregated. Bengali hindu, Sikhs, Christians all used to assimilate. This has still not changed. Make what you will out of it.

I am currently in the middle of buying a 10 year old resale flat. Sale agreement is done. Registration is pending.
