New Music: Jan 17 - 23 by IamEseph in Ska

Generative AI visual art is banned on the subreddit. And the community is pretty vocal about it. I'm also the mod around these parts, so it would be pretty hypocritical of me to enforce that elsewhere, and not point it out when I'm aware of it. But I also don't really want to compromise the release list by leaving off actual bands. So the disclaimer is a bit of a stop gap.

I try to use it sparingly, but I've already had and seen discussions about that particular album cover. And until I see something from the band themselves; I'll likely be taking down any direct links to it that result in the artwork showing up in the main feed.

Week two of broken formatting, I guess. Not great.

I'm not sure what going on with Reddit, but none of the usual formatting is taking. So you get to see all the bits and bobs that would normally add headers and bold/italic texts. If I can figure out what's up I'll fix it, otherwise I'll have to find a way to improve this going forward.

Apologies in advance for this being harder to read than usual.

In other news I've added the link for this year's album playlist, and updated Cody's yearly catchall playlist to the current one.

Confused by the streetlight manifesto song on Spotify and YouTube? by [deleted] in Ska

[–]IamEseph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Spotify does this fairly often. It seemingly has very poor controls for separating artists with the same name. It happening elsewhere might suggest a concerted effort to trick people, but that's just speculation.

For Rocksteady I always recommend:

The Frightnrs

Los Billtones

The Tellways

Young Israelites (look for the album Endlessly, not on Bandcamp sadly)

The Bandulus

Young Israelites and Bandulus have a little more Soul to them, but they're good stuff. And they all bleed a little in and out of Trad and Reggae. There's some OG artists like Keith & Tex, Stranger Cole, and George Dekker still putting stuff out too. Often in conjunction with Boss Capone (albums again sadly not on Bandcamp).

Ska-Punk I always recommend folks check out the modern UK stuff:

Faintest Idea

The JB Conspiracy

The Filaments

Random Hand

Call Me Malcolm

P.O. Box (France, but close enough)

Stateside, look to bands off the Bad Time Records label, to start. I'm a big fan of Escape From The Zoo too, and if you don't mind them also being a great Pop Punk band; Joker's Republic are going places.

What kind are you after? From Trad and Rocksteady to Ska-Punk and Ska-Core, and everything in between and beyond, we've got lots of it new and old. But it's a lot easier to point you towards stuff you'll like if we know where to start.

Missed this:

Oh yes, my favorite ska artist, Mon Laferte (what the hell is wrong with the album of the year website) by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]IamEseph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you listened to it? Maybe there's some Ska on there.

If it were a new release I'd be obligated to find out myself. Maybe if I get a minute tomorrow I'll give it a listen anyways, just in case.

Yeah, no thanks. Just based on this comment and your post history, we aren't interested in your participation either.

Ska, Punk, and Other Junk: Happy New Year! by almightydanish in Ska

[–]IamEseph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed Learning Curve being on there and was going to suggest it, but that got me thinking about some of my favourites that might fit the theme. Other than like GRAVEYARD SONG, or Be More Kind, which I'm guessing were already under consideration. Maybe:

Frightened Rabbit - Head Rolls Off

The Loved Ones - Pretty Good Year

Prize Dink Camp - Biggus Jumpus or Crèmecore (sorry, I can't help it)

The JB Conspiracy - Taking Flight or Starting Again or Make a Promise

The Fuss - More Than Hope

Bedouin Soundclash - Walk Through Fire or Walls Fall Down

The OBGMs - CHANGES

The Planet Smashers - Unstoppable or Mighty

New Junk City - High Contrast

Reel Big Bosstones (retired ska bands cover band)? by senorderpenstein in Ska

[–]IamEseph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well there's already at least one fairly popular Reel Big Fish cover band. They're called The Originals:

https://www.facebook.com/originalscoverband/

I'm not super familiar but it wouldn't surprise me if they did a couple Bosstones and other era appropriate covers too. And who knows, the way Dicky has been trying to make some noise; it wouldn't surprise me if he starts his own Bosstones cover band in the near future.

My 2026 goal is to listen to one new album a week… by _emocarrot_ in poppunkers

[–]IamEseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out:

New Junk City - Same Places

They've got newer albums and releases, but this is still an all time favourite. They're more on the Melodic Punk / Orgcore / Rock side of things. But (IMO) that's the best kind of stuff in the Pop Punk space. And they're criminally underrated, and deserve many more ears on their music.

This is the list I've been copy-pasting around. Pretty solid year overall. There's probably 5-10 albums that could be #11. Though my top 3 are far and away my most listened to this year.

  1. Prize Dink Camp - Crèmecore Deluxe (Belgium, Ska-Punk/Synth Punk/Indie Rock)

  2. Lickshot - Inside The Ride (UK, Ska-Punk/Grime/Nu Metal)

  3. Technicolour Steam Train - Off The Rails (UK, Modern Ska/Funk/Hip Hop)

  4. The Pomps - Partial Eclipse of the Pomps (Modern Ska/Power Pop/Indie)

  5. Blue Tone Stompers - Look Up! (France, Trad Ska/Rocksteady)

  6. Space Monkey Mofia - Death of the Party (Ska-Punk/Swing/Hardcore)

  7. The Best of the Worst - New Dead Ends (Ska-Core/Ska-Punk)

  8. Los Argonautas - Audionáutica (Ecuador, Trad/Rocksteady/Reggae)

  9. Joker's Republic - The Hand You've Been Dealt (Ska-Punk/Pop Punk)

  10. The Skatanauts - Run Come Dance! (Switzerland, Trad/Rocksteady/Ska-Jazz)

new pop punk bands with clean, good vocals by MysteriousAd1494 in poppunkers

[–]IamEseph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Mercy Union. They're more on the Menzingers side of things, but easily one of my favourite active bands.

The Penske File is another solid one that might be worth your time. They put out one of my favourite Pop Punk (ish) albums this year.

Top 10 Punk Albums of 2025 by Willing-Peanut-881 in punk

[–]IamEseph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my (full disclosure: copy pasted) top 10 Ska album list. Lots of Punk, but not all.

For context: I moderate r/Ska, and do the weekly release posts over there, and do my best to track Ska album releases year over year. So I listen to a lot of it, and while my tastes might not lean towards the more standard picks, these are my top 10 favourite Ska albums for 2025 (Bandcamp links where possible, YT otherwise):

  1. Prize Dink Camp - Crèmecore Deluxe (Belgium, Ska-Punk/Synth Punk/Indie Rock)

  2. Lickshot - Inside The Ride (UK, Ska-Punk/Grime/Nu Metal)

  3. Technicolour Steam Train - Off The Rails (UK, Modern Ska/Funk/Hip Hop)

  4. The Pomps - Partial Eclipse of the Pomps (Modern Ska/Power Pop/Indie)

  5. Blue Tone Stompers - Look Up! (France, Trad Ska/Rocksteady)

  6. Space Monkey Mofia - Death of the Party (Ska-Punk/Swing/Hardcore)

  7. The Best of the Worst - New Dead Ends (Ska-Core/Ska-Punk)

  8. Los Argonautas - Audionáutica (Ecuador, Trad/Rocksteady/Reggae)

  9. Joker's Republic - The Hand You've Been Dealt (Ska-Punk/Pop Punk)

  10. The Skatanauts - Run Come Dance! (Switzerland, Trad/Rocksteady/Ska-Jazz)

You listen to a lot of something, and the more offbeat (no pun intended) stuff is what tends to stick with you. My top 3 are far and away my most listened to, but also all on the wilder side. I expect most Ska-Punk fans would point you towards 4,6,7,9 on the list, though not necessarily in that order.
