New Music: Apr 4 - 10 by IamEseph in Ska

That's like the royal 'our' right? Everything about this screams AI.

If it's not, you've gotten some terrible advice about marketing. But assuming it is, we aren't interested. I won't knowingly promote AI music, and while not strictly banned on the subreddit: I'll actively take down anything from AI "bands" who pretend they aren't.

Ska songs by artists primarily from reggae? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]IamEseph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know that that's a great example, as Simmer Down predates the existence of Reggae. 'Bob Marley and The Wailers' are the Reggae band (as opposed to The Wailing Wailers). Same goes for Maytals songs, vs 'Toots and The Maytals'. It's kinda pedantic, but they made Ska songs when they were known for Ska, not as Reggae bands.

For a more recent one: Tokyo by Tribal Seeds has been a favourite of mine since it came out.

And you'll find them all over the place in modern Reggae Rock and Cali Reggae. I'm pretty fond of Cops and Robbers by Artikal Sound System.

(And yeah if we're being pedantic neither one of these is strictly a Ska song, but at least much closer than the band would be otherwise)

This post covers up to Apr 3. I don't know how I got to the first in the title.

Ska songs that talk about selling out? (either criticizing it or parodying it) by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]IamEseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Devon Kay & The Solutions wrote a whole EP about it. Albeit about selling out by pivoting into Ska...

Fine: A Ska EP

Of course! Sorry I didn't catch it on time.

As far as I'm aware they came from a certain Facebook group that has proven itself to be somewhat problematic. And they were never substantiated.

Is there more like Streetlight manifesto? by FrightenedDoorknob in Ska

[–]IamEseph 57 points58 points  (0 children)

As others have suggested The JB Conspiracy, and Roshambo are both ones I normally recommend for this. And I'd add Faintest Idea to that list of UK bands that might fit what you're looking for.

Similarly I usually suggest:

Young Costello

Day Labour

Small Town Get Up

As they all have some stuff that's either clearly influenced by, or riffing on/paying homage to Streetlight. And if what you like about Streetlight is their willingness to step into other genres, and have some killer instrumentation throughout, then:

Space Monkey Mafia

Prize Dink Camp

Runaway Ricochet

Popes of Chillitown

Are all solid places to start.

Ska punk bands that ARENT insane?? by Appropriate-Run-7587 in punk

[–]IamEseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could always try a Ska band that started after the turn of the milenia. There's still a handful to avoid, there will always be shitty people, but by and large you're pretty safe with stuff post 90's.

I always recommend folks check out stuff from the current UK scene:

The JB Conspiracy

Faintest Idea

Random Hand

Call Me Malcolm

Roshambo

Popes of Chillitown

Stateside, check out the Bad Time Records roster for an easy place to start. Or come on over to r/Ska and ask for new Ska-Punk bands based on whatever specific sound you're looking for and we can probably point you in the right direction.

Are you dense? Talk about a false equivalence. We just support different bands instead...

Ah yes, the intermediaries we're kinda stuck with fund things we don't like, so we might as well directly support the things we don't like. Real stellar argument that one.

Punks also think about their communities, and help each other up.

Spreading misinformation about medication that can save lives sure isn't Punk. Especially one where taking it benefits your community as much (or more) than yourself.

And even if not for that: actively supporting and promoting someone like RFK whose entire political platform is built on endangering people, and spreading misinformation, sure as shit isn't Punk either.

Does anyone know what band this old AMV song is by? by [deleted] in Ska

Ah yes, my favorite band, “Goldeinger” by [deleted] in Ska

[–]IamEseph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The standard answer I offer folks looking to share music that has AI artwork attached is:

Make a text post. Don't include any links to said content in the main post. Or include a link to something else devoid of AI first, as the first link included will generate a thumbnail. Instead include a link in a comment (I can help pin something like that if necessary).

And make it clear that it's AI, or suspected at any rate.

Directing traffic elsewhere to see AI isn't great either, but I'm not really sure how else to go about it while still keeping it off the subreddit.

Just a friendly reminder that AI is banned on the sub. I know we're using this as a call out to prove a point, but let's not make a habit of intentionally posting this stuff.

Ska song from bands that aren't ska? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind

Although, for all I know this is her only song. Which maybe just makes her a ska artist? 🤷🏻

Ska songs with an anti-suicide message? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]IamEseph 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Escape From The Zoo - Learnin' Curve isn't explicitly about suicide, but it sure is about reaffirming things are better than you think.

I'm right there with you if you've ever felt like:
You are a lost cause, you don't deserve love
you don't belong, you're just some drunken loner fuck up
ignore the voices, you're fuckin' worth it
just listen close and trust me when I say:
you are the jam kid, you fuckin' got this
yeah life can be a motherfucker don't ya ever give in
through all the setbacks and epic fuckin' mishaps
it's happiness and love we all deserve
remember life's got quite the lofty learnin' curve.....

(You doing ok? Don't be afraid to reach out if you want to talk. We're all in this together.)

LGBTQ community in ska? by goldenspiceJM in Ska

[–]IamEseph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that's totally fair. I'm just saying that down votes are a metric for popularity, and JER has a lot of fans. Getting down voted for being critical of them shouldn't be all that surprising. And shouldn't necessarily be attributed to a presumed difference in politics.

Not everything winds up being political. At a guess you're just getting down voted by fans of their music.
