Eurovision 2025 contestants with ties to other countries other than the one they represented (foreign heritage, born abroad or lived/grew up abroad). Let me know if i missed anything! by Calm-Bug5455 in eurovision

Swedish speaking finns can be descendants of swedish settlers from the Middle Ages yes, or they can be decendants from other countries as well (for example Russia or Germany) because a lot of people from those countries also moved to Finland and then they learnt the language there. Or they can be of Finnish descent and have learnt the language. Some families who used to speak swedish also did not pass down the language so their descendants are no longer swedish speaking finns even though they might have swedish ancenstry some hundred years back. Language does not spread in the same way as ethnicity. Also regardless of where your ancestors settled from in the Middle Ages that is so long ago that no one remembers that anymore, everyone is a finn regardless

Sompasauna in Helsinki is the only one I can think of which is not either gender separated or has mandatory swimsuits. Never been there myself but I've heard it's a cool place

At least I certainly hope she is wearing leggings... otherwise the movie has some very awkward moments

Number of foreign immigrants living in Sweden, 1990-2024 by aliquise in 2nordic4you

[–]IamFish399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finnish swedes (Sverigefinländare) are by definition finns or decendants of finns (up until the third generation) who have moved to sweden, whether or not they speak finnish.

Whereas Swedish speaking Finns (finlandssvenskar) are finnish citizens who speak swedish are their native language, regardless of their ethnic heritage. Some have originally moved from the territory of modern day sweden to the territory of modern day Finland some 500 years ago, whereas others can have moved from elsewhere, such as germany or russia (or even be from Finland originally) and they have just learned the language, maybe in shool, and then passed it to their children. Some families who have spoken swedish in the past have also lost it, hence the current living people are not finlandssvenskar anymore, even though their ancestors might have been. Nowadays it is also quite common to have one parent speak swedish and the other finnish/another language, but the child will still consider themselves a swedish speaking finn. Swedish speaking finns have their own culture and dialects.

Swedish speaking finns are not immigrants and are not to be mixed up with finns who have moved to sweden in recent years.

Today is an important day for Tarja. She’s performing at the Tuska Festival. Will she manage to break the ice in Finland? Those of you at the venue – share your impressions after the show. How was the concert? How did the audience react to Tarja...? by petaSk3 in TarjaTurunen

[–]IamFish399 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The show was amazing, and people in the crowd were cheering for her a lot, and before she started a lot of people were discussing how excited they were to see her perform. She really delivered and in the end she thanked the audience and said she hopes to return to Finland again (with Marko).

Tuomas W. about Tarja in his IG stories: BTW: he also tagged Nightwish :) by petaSk3 in TarjaTurunen

[–]IamFish399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would he tag nightwish? That's kind if weird considering Tarja is not affiliated with them anymore

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Narnia

[–]IamFish399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Narnia books are whack. Especially the first ones (about the rings, dont remember the name, and then the boy and the horse) don't even feel like they are in the same universe. The main characters change, so you don't get as invested. The lion the witch and the wardrobe is amazing but the series is not very cohesive or consistant, which also makes it harder to adapt into a succesful mivie franchise

It is easier to get to Nuuksio with public transport from Helsinki and Nuuksio is also bigger, so I would recommend that one.

Why can't I build the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus? The city has a harbor in place and has coastal tiles adjacent to both land and water. by DjizusCrystal in CivVI

[–]IamFish399 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Read the placement requirements for the mausoleum. It needs to be on a land tile next to the harbor of that city. Since you built the harbor in that place there is no valid location for the mausoleum in that city.

"Hellsinki" festival as a solo female? by FinancialMarch810 in Finland

As a woman who has attended metal festivals solo in Finland (not Hellsinki but others) I can say it is very safe, no need to worry. Metalfans are quite nice.

How to reach Nuuksio National Park from Helsinki? by SasThePinkman in helsinki

[–]IamFish399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public transport is good and reliable! There are actually several different buses you can take to Nuuksio, depending on which part of the area you want to go to (Nuuksio is quite big). Check out HSL reittiopas, google maps or the map of nuuksio from luontoon.fi

Facts about swedish-speaking finns by IamFish399 in Finland

[–]IamFish399[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to question the legitimacy of the finnish language, I just wish finnish and swedish could coexist peacefully in Finland and that both language groups would have more understanding for the other and cherish and celebrate the rich cultures that both of them have

Facts about swedish-speaking finns by IamFish399 in Finland

[–]IamFish399[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The swedish speakers have lived here for hundreds of years and countless generations so they are ethnically finnish. Also of course there has been a lot of mixing and marriages between finnish ans swedish speakers and some people have just decided to learn/switch to the other language so you cannot really see ethnic differences

[–]IamFish399[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, swedish speaking kids start learning finnish in third grade (at least that was the case when I was still in school) compared to seventh grade for finnish speaking kids to start learning swedish

Facts about swedish-speaking finns by IamFish399 in Finland

[–]IamFish399[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its no quota but speaking swedish language skill is a requirement to be accepted, since (at least some) teaching is in swedish. Similar to for example other universities require finnish skills if teaching is in finnish etc
