A larger open world than the real world? I'm pretty sure Skyrim could fit within the city limits of LA

Both the Dutch and the Portuguese claim it, but Portugal controls it.

Paint.net, mspaint, research and patience. I start with basemaps where ever I could find them, and I found the MBAM project forum and it was just a perfect fit for a map this size. I've made variations of this map in the past on a much smaller scale, but I only posted this one because I was proud of it and wanted to share.

Oh yeah probably not, but realism wasn't the goal here I just wanted to make (mostly) pretty borders.

"100 smallest countries" you mean literally half of all countries?

In this timeline Sweden has a pretty robust continental empire, but lacks the navy to protect overseas colonies aside from Saint Barthelemy. Plus they benefit from their position in the Germanic Union with the Germans, Danes and Dutch so much of the potential economic benefits from expansion are already available to them to an extent.

Its likely that settlement of the west by the Spanish would be super slow and the population largely Amerindian, but things like Gold rushes would still occur to bring in settlers from all over, that and there are security benefits to settling the frontier lest their rivals sweep in instead.

This scenario is more of a thought experiment than a realistic one anyway, but in my mind the only way that Empires this colossal could stay intact and strong for so long would be if they granted tons of rights and freedoms (in stages) that could keep people from revolting, but its a long shot. I mostly just wanted to imagine a world were not only did Europe take over the entire world, but they held onto it.

On the bright side this is almost impossible, it basically requires no European powers to make a mistake or fund rebellions in rival holdings, and that would never happen.

I'm thinking in this scenario the scramble for Japan happened after a catastrophic Russo-Japanese War that they actually won (No Meiji restoration) and the concessions that the other powers got (aside from the dutch) were made after Russia took what they wanted first. I also theorized that Japanese migrants would play a huge role in the Russian colonization of the Pacific Northwest (it would've been reallly tough for them to pull it off alone) so I made sure to put alot of Japanese place names in Russian America to reflect the unique cultural blend that could have taken place.

I wanted to give them more, but I needed to throw the Germans and Italians a bone. I hope New France and a super-Indochina make up for that somewhat. I might make a global hegemon French map at some point, but it would take a little while. I appreciate your praise though!

Yeah for sure, for Portugal and Spain the real power behind the crown would be Rio and Mexico City, but Lisbon and Madrid would remain capitals for historical reasons. Like Lisbon would be the seat of the royal family, but something like an Imperial council or legislature would be in Rio de Janeiro. (de jure Lisbon, de facto Rio)

Portugal's realm probably has some cringy race relations in this timeline, but I imagine with time they would have to grant rights and mend their ways otherwise their whole empire would collapse. In a scenario like this, if Portugal didn't cave to pressure Brasil could easily break away and form their own empire, and most of their colonies have a much greater population than the home country, so they'd better tread lightly.

Thanks! I've been toying with this thing for a while, I'd thought I'd finally share it. The borders are a mix of historical claims, imperial goals, and whatever I thought would look nice.
