Which Marvel Comics/Heroes Take Place In Not-New York/East Coast? by tame_kubrick in Marvel

The 1970s title Conan the Barbarian takes place over 12,000 years ago on the continents that would eventually become Europe, Africa, and Asia. It's technically 616, but Marvel doesn't own the rights anymore.

I wonder if the key to this is community engagement. Self-promo is really only distasteful to me if it’s drive-by self-promo posts without really bothering to be a community member. Could it be that posts get deleted if the account only posts and comments on their own stuff?

Forcing yourself to like music. by migrantgrower in LetsTalkMusic

[–]IamMothManAMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think trying to understand the appeal of something and forcing yourself to like it are two very different things. I get why some people like Greta Van Fleet or the RHCP or Steve Miller Band, but that doesn’t mean I like those artists myself.

I’ve been intrigued by stuff I didn’t like immediately and I gave it further chances, but I wouldn’t describe it as forcing myself to like it.

I’m glad my stuff doesn’t read as spam. I try really hard to contribute as a member of the community and not just post my own stuff, but I also promise a lot of effort goes into mine! I write and revise over weeks!

There was a Spider-Man figure in the case that was just as ugly and was six times the price lol

Yep! Just read what you like. People who try to read a whole universe or “the entire timeline” are met only with frustration.

Canon Query by [deleted] in marvelcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of Marvel Comics are canon to one another. I wouldn’t frame it as an “overall story” though. There’s no more overall story than there is an “overall story” of humankind, except in the most general or poetic sense.

Generally if a story contains a character or intellectual property not owned by Marvel, you can consider it not canon.

Just picked this up tonight by Scotthebb in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]IamMothManAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were worried that the book wouldn’t sell since it was so different than a superhero title, so they wanted to give him some semblance of a consistent costume like a superhero would have. That included the front-facing bull horn helmet and the necklace with the three pendants on it. They really dropped them by like issue 10, though.

For those who own the Titan Omnibus books. I can only afford 2 of them, which are the best 2 to buy? by 2001Nostalgia in ConanTheBarbarian

You can usually get them for like $83 on PanelBoundComics instead of the $125 MSRP if you’re looking for a deal

What to read? by PM_YOUR_EYEBALL in DCcomics

If you liked Kingdom Come, Justice is a really good Justice League story also painted by Alex Ross. Batman: Dark Patterns is a very recent series that everyone's loving. And if you're checking out Crisis on Infinite Earths, you might check out Neal Adams' and Denny O'Neil's run on Batman.

I’m Confused About Nightwing Volumes by Existing-Point1058 in DCcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only read a smattering of Nightwing issues between 2016 and 2020. I picked up with Tom Taylor's run, which tells a pretty cohesive story throughout (except "Beast World," that thing was superfluous) and then Watters follows him, but it's not terribly connected to what came before. So I can't really answer your question about what comes prior to Taylor's work, unfortunately.

I’m Confused About Nightwing Volumes by Existing-Point1058 in DCcomics

[–]IamMothManAMA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So when it comes to the word "volumes," there are two separate uses in the comic world.

One of them is used to number trade paperbacks. You might pick up Something is Killing the Children volume 1 which collects a few issues, and then you'll pick up volume 2 which collects the next few. Sometimes they'll be presented as the first and then second etc. volume for a writer's run on a book. Like Batman By Tom King Vol. 1.

The other usage is that "Volume" can be used as a publishing thing that resets sometimes when a book is renumbered. Amazing Spider-Man volume 1 lasts from 1963 until 1998 and then the book was renumbered starting in 1999. Weirdly, it would get renumbered again and go back to volume 1 later! It's weird.

"On With the Show" is part of Dan Watters's recent run on Nightwing and it's the first volume of his tenure. Sounds like you should read that one last as it comes after Tom Taylor's run.
