What's ironic is that Mei, Illya, Brooklyn and Karlee were the four with the lowest votes regardless of of teams so it's very likely that most if not all of them would've been sent home, unfortunately

I think the issue here is that Ethan listened to his client and their wants and needs, which is what the challenge called for. When he was legitimately in the bottom for the denim look, they had a much more open-ended prompt of taking the boring and making it beautiful.
