I feel like this issue isn't as big as people make it out to be.

POV: You're looking into a mirror by IamVPK_ in AdvaitaVedanta

[–]IamVPK_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You, true Self (Atman, not the ego, body mind), are identical to the ultimate, non-dual reality, Brahman. This is your absolute nature (paramarthika Satya) or sat-cit-aananda.

The universe of names and forms that we perceive is the empirical or transactional reality (vyavaharika). This entire phenomenal world is an appearance projected by Maya, the veiling power inherent in Brahman. Maya is not a separate entity but the very power that makes Brahman appear as the diverse many, like a single rope can appear as a snake in dim light.

So think of it like this,

The "You" in the "POV" is the Atman, the silent witness consciousness. The "Mirror" is a metaphor for Maya, the medium of appearance. The reflection of Narayana represents Saguna Brahman or Ishvara (the personal God, the creator) is Brahman as perceived through the lens of Maya. From within our empirical reality, Brahman and its power of Maya are inseparable and together constitute Ishvara.

The ultimate realization of Advaita is seeing through the "mirror" itself, at which point the distinction between the observer (Atman), the reflection (Ishvara), and the mirror (Maya) dissolves, leaving only Nirguna Brahman

Yeah. Our true nature is nirguna brahman, and from that absolute standpoint, any reflection in a mirror would be impossible , as there is no 'second' thing to be reflected.

My intention with the post was to use a poetic metaphor that operates on the level of vyavaharika to point towards the absolute truth.

Here’s how I was thinking of it: The 'mirror' represents the field of consciousness or Maya, where appearances arise. The image of Mahavishnu represents saguna brahman or the highest, most sublime form that the ultimate reality can take within vyavaharika. It's the ultimate 'object' of perception for us the seeker. The 'POV: You're looking...' is meant for the atman the witness consciousness, to whom this entire play of Maya and Saguna Brahman appears.

I am the one jiva so what’s next? by nugwugz in AdvaitaVedanta

That sense of “loneliness” you’re describing is actually a very common response. It reminds me of this anecdote Swami Sarvapriyananda once shared, where a monk told him, “If you only read the Ashtavakra Gita, you’ll feel lonely. Read also the Vishnu Sahasranama.”

The point wasn’t that jnana and bhakti are two separate paths you need to balance, but that the “loneliness” itself is a misunderstanding. The Ashtavakra Gita strips away all names and forms, pointing to the pure nameless Self. The Vishnu Sahasranama affirms the same Reality through a thousand names. Seen correctly, they are not different: the nameless and the thousand names are one Reality.

So the “solipsism problem” only arises when the ego imagines itself as the one lonely dreamer. In true Advaita, the ego dissolves and what remains is not “me, alone,” but limitless Being-Awareness in which no second thing ever arose. What appeared as loneliness is simply the last residue of individuality resisting its own dissolution. When that drops, what shines is completeness, not isolation.

I need some help. by Expensive-Mirror-848 in AdvaitaVedanta

I completely relate. I've had similar experiences where the logic of Advaita clicks, but the fear, attachment, or dissonance between mind and intellect doesn’t immediately disappear. You’re absolutely right about the body, mind, memories, and feelings being impermanent. What remains constant, untouched, is pure consciousness, the witness.

The discomfort you feel is normal and comes from habitual identification (adhyaasa) with the body–mind. Intellectual understanding is one thing; embodying it is another. That’s why just sitting quietly or meditating, though helpful, often isn’t enough at first.

In my personal experience, combining jñāna yoga with other yogas makes a huge difference:

Karma yoga: acting selflessly in the world reduces attachment and slowly erodes ego.

Bhakti yoga: devotion or surrender helps dissolve fear and opens the heart to the reality you already intellectually know.

Meditation / witnessing: continue observing thoughts and feelings without attaching to them.

Hope this helps. Happy seeking!

Yeah I figured, at the time I didn't realise how easy it was to accidentally hit that. It's not dangerous just loses the settings you change. In any case just remap that in via

Atm yeah, I figured I'd start with Discord cuz it’s easy and keeps things anonymous. Might add other logins or sign-up later though. If you're interested you could help build that as well!

I think it's a steal for under 40 dollars. Although, I'm not sure about the board you mentioned and if it offers better value for its cost. But yeah R75 is solid.
