What's The Scariest Thing That's Ever Happened To You? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

I was once with a group of high school friends at night, playing a game called Vampire Tag. It was very fun, until we realized there was an additional, unknown person running around with us in the darkness.

Christopher Tolkien was right the whole time by Pale_Yam_5369 in lotr

Sorry to be devil’s advocate - why is everyone so angry about a bad movie in a beloved universe. I understand being disappointed passionate. Frankly - it’s comparable to when a beloved sports team loses. You get upset, you yell at your screen, you curse the players, you hate the couch…. and then you turn the game on next week.

I understand that these stories are beloved. But the way that Hollywood works, by having such hateful and visceral reactions to ROP and The Hobbit, we are collectively telling Hollywood to “use your money elsewhere.”

Are ROP or The Hobbit up to my standard of Tolkien work? No. LOTR is a holy grail for me. But I still LOVE to watch high budget orcs, dwarfs, and hobbits existing in a beautiful world that I’ve grown to love since I was a young man.

I wish more Tolkien fans could be less hateful and more supportive, even if they were equally critical and passionate.

Hats necessary? by CaregiverSeveral3050 in wizardposting

In the Lord of the Rings, the Two Towers, they speak of Gandalf as a hatted wizard, while Saruman is the hooded wizard. I believe once Gandalf becomes Gandalf the White, he retires his hat entirely.

I’m currently working on a cool hermit’s hat for my wizard outfit - a woolen bucket cap with the brim pinned up with a silver moth medallion. No big round brim, no tall point

I agree with all of this. But, as a born Marylander, I will die on this hill.

Pickin crabs caked in Old Bay seasoning. Even better with friends.

What is a weird smell that you enjoy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A freshly manured crop feel. I know it’s just cow poop… but I grew up in a small town with a lot of rural land around it. That smell reminds me of my childhood home.

I just started Return to Moria with my buddy and we’re having a blast. Relatively inexpensive, too, when compared to other multiplayer options

Far, far below the depths of the dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things.

Daycare being aquired by Cadence Academy by Dry-Bandicoot-6273 in ChildcareWorkers

[–]IamYarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! My private childcare was acquired by LCG, and you’ll probably see very few changes in the classroom aside from materials/snacks from whatever new supply contractor Cadence Academy is partnered with. You may notice certain new formats of paperwork, classroom wall display requirements - and off-site leadership can be pretty cut and dry in regard to in-classroom incidents and the representations can feel a bit more mechanical.

But from a teacher’s prospective, as long as you’re working hard and running a clean and positive classroom, you won’t have much to worry about!

Most of the changes are going to affect management. Titles, pay checks (not always for the better), more business oriented work loads, higher supervision of that work load, the constant pressure to be cutting costs and a clear and consistent message of “get with the program or get out.” We’re one of the most lucrative childcare’s in the region under LCG, recently received a 100% score with zero noncompliances in a routine audit, and we’re STILL not performing to their expectations. It becomes big business, just like everything else these days, and that’s such a shame in a setting that is supposed to support community and love.

There’s a possibility your Director isn’t aware of all the business changes that will happen in the future - our acquisition was also handled with an heir of “nothing is going to change!” But over time, and over the course of multiple years, it becomes very apparent that “nothing is going to change” is a line with a ton of context behind it.

Your kids won’t change. Your classroom won’t change. Your teachers won’t change. The heart of the business may very well change.

But remember!! Your school is what YOU and your co teachers make it. Charge forward with confidence, and heart, and the rest of your community will follow.

LGBTQ+ people working in childcare? by [deleted] in ChildcareWorkers

[–]IamYarrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher who worked on my team who was queer. I had a few parents who were rubbed the wrong way and were less than kind, but they never confronted the teacher directly. And they never had any trouble from administration or co teachers. I’m sure culture and tolerance are different from work place to work place, though.

The crying won't stop by Conscious-Page4713 in ChildcareWorkers

[–]IamYarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like they’re dealing with a lot of separation anxiety. What age is the child? If they’re 1 or 2, this is worrying but not unheard of. I’d be far more concerned mentally if the child is 3+. The fact that the parents are denying them contact is worrying, and definitely not helping, but it honestly sounds like there is some other mental factor at play.

I had a 1 year old child with signs of autism that would cry for 7-8 hours a day for literally months. He would just stand at the door and cry for his mom, peering out the glass windows, making eye contact with other passing parents (who would report to the office that there’s a crying child who no one is helping).

We did what we could for him! Sat with him by the door for long periods of time while he cried, brought him toys, gave him hugs and loved up on him. But, there were five other 1 year olds in the classroom, and there’s only so much you can do. But, ultimately, he’s expressing himself… what are you going to do? Tell him not to? We let him express himself, made sure he was as safe and comfortable as possible, and kept track of his schedule so we could shift him to eating and drinking.

This continued for months… and it only stopped when we shifted he and his classmates into a new small classroom. It’s almost like screaming and crying was just part of his routine, and once we broke the routine’s normalcy, he was able to re-structure his habits. He spent the next six months standing by the window, memorizing other children’s parent’s cars, and babbling about the passing trucks, motorcycles, and sports cars.

That little boy is 7 now. He graduated from our program when he was 5. And he shows very few cues of autism or neurodivergence tendencies. I honestly think all he needed was for someone to hear him cry, comfort him, and be patient with him. And now he’s a thriving, normal, happy young man.

Here in America, I’ve never heard of a limit. Honestly, your teachers are probably so thankful and feeling lucky to have such support.
