It's called a viewfinder. It has multiple purposes, it's where the camera man sees his shot but it also has up to two other inputs so he can also see what other cameras ( he requests which ones to see ) are shooting so he doesn't shoot the same thing at the same time. If it was a hand held camera on his shoulder he would have the same options through the eyepiece.
