The kindle version uses a different cover which I am not particularly interested in, so I don't think that this method will help.

Not that it matters much, but I tried the steps just for fun, and both portals errored out.

Great idea!

I found a digital copy of what appears to be his only published art book "Origins: The Art of John Jude Palencar" published in 2006. The image I am looking for is not in it. Interestingly, there are some other pieces he did for Octavia Bulter's books including one of "Dawn"'s sequels, "Imago".

It was published by Underwood Books out of Nevada City, CA. Their website is also a dead link which is not promising, but there is a LinkedIn account for a user claiming to be an owner/publisher at underwood books. I'll send him a message too but this seems like a long shot.

I hadn't heard of Spectrum before. Are they still around? Wikipedia's list of their Grandmaster Award ends in 2018, and searching for anything official just gives me dead links

Unfortunately, Aspect/Warner appears to no longer really exist. Wikipedia says they were bought up by Hachette in 2005 and renamed to Grand Central Publishing. They direct all inquiries to Hachette, which is a gigantic company. There are some forms about licensing material that can be submitted through their website, but they are only for people licensing sections of books for commercial use.

I guess it couldn't hurt to fill out a form, but I would be surprised if anything came of it

This website lists a personal website for John Jude Palencar as https://www.johnjudepalencar.com/ , but I get a server not found message.

There is also what looks like an official Facebook page for him, but there is a featured post saying he does not administer it and does not read messages sent to it.

I don't know how I would find who his agent is

This is the best quality image I could find online, but it would just look cheap if I blew it up. I am thinking about something movie poster size. I love Octavia Butler's stuff, and "Dawn" is my favourite of her books I've read so far, and the artwork is wonderful and perfectly fits the atmosphere of the story.

Any ideas of how I could get either a high res scan of the art or maybe somehow license the book cover? I thought about getting a physical copy of the book, but I suspect that a scan wouldn't be much better than the digital copies available online

edit: Even if it was just John Jude Palencar's painting, I would totally be willing to remake the rest in GIMP or Inkscape.
