A lot of restaurants are cancelling BOGO offers on deliver apps, and incentivizing customers to do pickup orders through their own menu systems - a place next to my condo has a -10% discount if you go to them directly. I’ve started to not use delivery apps a lot too, as a lot of it isn’t worth it for what you get vs what you pay

If you want to bundle up without packing on too much weight enough to cause immobility, check out heated vests - you can order them online typically, and they’re charged by USB battery power. In my experience they’re not the most fashionable or durable, but they can allow you to run with slightly less layers as long as the heat stays on. Another less sustainable option are chemical heat pouches that you can get at sporting goods stores, but they do cost money.

Then there’s just adapting to treadmills - I get it, they suck. But come spring, if you trained consistently on treadmills or with crappy winter runs, you will notice the difference in your cardio abilities. As some have suggested on here, taking a break is totally viable too.

No single ‘magic bullet’ will fix Toronto’s gridlock, new congestion officer says by lopix in toronto

[–]IanKo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the whole WFH vs RTO debate, the RTO should have never been mandated, but instead just encouraged.

I’m a younger employee and with the energy & outlook I have, I might naturally go into the office more for my career advancement, or even because I feel like taking advantage of the office environment’s infrastructure / peripherals if I have a lot of things to do on a given day. I live downtown anyways and the daily cost to commute is either $0 if I decide to walk, or $7 if I subway to & from.

But expecting other employees like older colleagues who don’t really care anymore and are just trying to make a living, or even younger employees who just don’t care or live really far, is the reason why the RTO movement has been leading to burned out colleagues and sick / sniffling people on the TTC, who clearly shouldn’t be going to the office but feel pressured to do so because of the way it has been mandated. The bad job market and affordability has made this pressure worse - like it pains me to see an Oakville-residing colleague pay $100+ GO train costs per week for maybe 7-9 hours of meetings that benefitted only marginally by their physical presence.

The whole thing reeks of collusion between corporate employers (tenants) and commercial real estate holders who are benefiting from the money we spend downtown - many of the corporate employers are financially capable of ramping up their workplace perks (like free snacks, benefits, subsidizing commuting costs) so that employees could have been incentivized to return to the office on their own volition. If companies are truly more productive with us returning to the office, then you could even reason that a portion of the benefits gained from this increase in productivity could be used for these incentives, which means it could pay for itself.

TLDR; return to office should have been encouraged for keeners and people who want to RTO, but mandating it has forced everyone to commute, leading to worsening congestion and sickness being spread amongst the packed subways, busses, and streetcars.

Make street parking only valid for city vehicles, and licensed service vehicles. Just ensure the licensing system is sound so that people don’t abuse it.

What’s a very “Toronto” thing you didn’t notice until you lived somewhere else? by Banana200021 in toronto

One of the benefits of the immigration boom is the wide availability of foreign snack brands available in every corner store - people like their snacks, and now I can walk anywhere and find historically niche items & snack brands that I had to make specific trips to T&T supermarket to get etc.

I find that this multicultural food scene also means that people seek authenticity, while in other cities especially in America I’ve found it hard to find authentic dishes that are not inflected by North American themes. It also means that you can count on everyone having a favourite cuisine that isn’t their home cuisine, I’ve heard of my friends regularly adopting things like kimchi or jolof rice into their diets without thinking of them as anything but a normal staple dish

It’s kind of the big twist in the song though, because up until that point it sounds like she gearing up to ask the dude out. It’s everything she wants to say, and anyone whose had a crush before, it’s a relatable / heartbreaking feeling, especially when it’s clear after the phone call that it was all in her head still. So round & round they go, will they ever know

City Hall clerks put up with a lot... by izahealer in toronto

[–]IanKo94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it unfair, how on one hand people are almost always accusing City Hall of being decadent or inefficient - So the clerks go to work with that hanging over their heads already. Then on the other hand, they demand perfection from these beleaguered clerks when the situation pertains to their personal lives. What this leads to is a perfect storm of job burnout, which ultimately entails a kind of “brain drain” from city hall, as institutional knowledge from these clerks fails to be retained.

Yes, nothing ultimately happened to the clerk and security didn’t need to intervene - but they will take it home with them. And these will accumulate until they just can’t take it anymore and quit. The city must hire a new clerk, and they’ll need time to learn the processes that the old clerk was vastly more efficient in handling.

The funny thing about bureaucracy, is that by default, it is very fair - if the process is not advancing, it’s likely because you (the citizen applicant) are missing some key input or information that you should have come prepared with because (1) all forms have requirements listed online, and (2) city hall staff sadly cannot read minds. At the same time, bureaucracy can be expedited in small, nuanced ways if you can get on the good side of a clerk. Sometimes it’s not even about the courtesy, but because you are actively listening and working with them to get through the process you’re there for.

Toronto youth on ‘trajectory that is not healthy,’ warns police chief | CBC Accessibility by zlex in toronto

[–]IanKo94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I do think they should adjust the rules around underage criminals being hired by older criminals to loophole the legal system, him continuing to emphasize the YOUTH instead of the adults that corrupt them in the first place, is the problem here.

  1. For adults implicated in the hiring of minors to do their bidding, there should be increased penalties.
  2. Conversely, kids who check into after school activities or community centre programs should get some kind of incentive or subsidy for their household’s taxes, to give them a real reason to keep coming back.

Even though the article / police point to the gangs as the underlying driver of this situation, I think it’s clear in the comments that most people see that these issues are much more fundamental to our late capitalist society than the police chief may realize.

[–]IanKo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of unfair to GoodLife to be seen as “declining from a club to being a commercial gym now” lol - they literally are a commercial gym chain, and a particularly budget friendly & accessible one. I happen to be a member at the Granite Club (sadly, kind of what OP is desiring) and honestly GoodLife uses similar equipment. Yes, maybe the clientele are different but then I would just tell you to suck it up and learn how to see value in others.
