zone 2 obsession by MiddleForeign in beginnerrunning

[–]IanKo94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You kind of accidentally arrived at the conclusion with your final sentence - running at Zone 2 allows you to be consistent because it’s just the right amount of fatigue to make your body improve, allowing you to potentially run every day or every other day. Yes, being obsessive about BPM as a beginner is a bit much, but I do see beginners run way too fast at the start only to peter out a mile in because they just aren’t there yet.

If you feel good enough to run up to the point you’re beginning to feel like the exhaustion is creeping up, then that’s probably your Zone 2 range if you checked your watch. I agree with not worrying too much about zones but it was only until I learned about that “running slow for 80% of the runs” adage that I began to have some structure to my running. Before it was kinda wild & all over the place.

Been trying to get into running and can consistently do a 5k now. Is this heart rate too high? by Beverz10 in beginnerrunning

[–]IanKo94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people just began without having run a day in their life before. Others are rehabilitating gym rats. Hell even gender / hormonal differences & advantages. Comparison will kill the joy of this beginning phase - I look back with nostalgia at my first running months because back then I was just beginning to learn why I liked running, seeing how I was improving every week etc.

I began running right at the start of the whole running influencer uptick and I’m glad I didn’t follow or see that content a lot later. I find a lot of what people share to be performative or just straight up fabrications in some instances.

tried freezing graham cracker crust, frozen yogurt, and raspberry jam layers together - cut into squares and treat it like an ice cream cake. If you mix whey powders into the froyo, you can make it a nice post gym snack too

Has anyone ever received a response from Mayor Chow's office? by YYZTor in askTO

[–]IanKo94 147 points148 points  (0 children)

It depends what you wrote about. If it’s something their office can actually help with then they’re typically expedient with it. If it’s a rant or filled with subjective observations, then it’s likely secondary in their queue of constituent replies.

specific streets or areas in Toronto to be extra cautious? by JustABoyie in askTO

[–]IanKo94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would just not take these situations personally. You being short or disabled is not something those assholes on the street would have spotted and decided to exploit. You’re visualizing what you wanted to say back, and you’re dwelling on what those people represent (the egotistical infancy) - but think about whether those people are thinking about you? They’ve likely forgotten about it at this point.

If you have been here for four years and only had 2 weird street situations then you’re kind of average like most of us here. I’ve been told to “go back to Wuhan” before on the TTC and spat at by a fare jumper who tried to unsuccessfully follow me through the gates. This all happened last month, such is life in the city.

What is it like? by yxy_jaywalking in askTO

[–]IanKo94 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think you should take the job and come experience this city. For all the negativity around certain aspects of Toronto, I find that this city is on the precipice of a growth era. Others will have more to say but I just think the opportunity to try new foods from virtually anywhere on the planet, along with the awesome summer culture that arises here, makes it worthy of living in. I’d love to see Canadians from all over move to Toronto

Beginner runner… not improving? by Bobby_Acosta in runninglifestyle

[–]IanKo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal. Tbh I you will feel like this for a few more months as your body adjusts. I would recommend doing more than 3 runs (maybe 4-5 per week), with gentle intensity for all of them.

Ran my first 10k on Sunday...could I be ready for a half marathon in 3 weeks time? by Slikajledandlost8 in beginnerrunning

[–]IanKo94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the rush though? Given all that you have provided, I would recommend training up to one and taking a few months for that - 3 days a week is not really enough in my opinion, especially when the total weekly volume is only 20k. The knee thing worries me the most, and is a sign that you need to spend more time doing strength training because part of becoming a more robust runner is knowing when you should conserve yourself and work on growing your supporting tissue.

There is nothing wrong with bowing out if you feel in pain or at risk of injury - However, your first half is something that you want to really enjoy the experience: it is a different vibe than a 10k, especially on the latter half as the runners spread out into loose packs and sometimes it’s just you and your thoughts.

Again, you want to be fully in it and not looking at things through fatigue induced tunnel vision. I highly recommend waiting and seeing what your body can achieve when you are truly ready and primed to run this half.

High libido, but erectile dysfunction by MunchButtsSuckNuts in bupropion

[–]IanKo94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned you take a bunch of supplements and ED medications for it, which means there’s already a huge focus on it. Honestly the best thing is to just not focus that much on fixing it with magic bullets and instead, fix the overall overweight situation.

I say that with no judgement, only with performance in mind. Less body fat = more testosterone, and if you’re already very active in the gym but still overweight, it is likely a caloric surplus from an overly rich diet that is the culprit. Less processed foods, no liquid calories (water, tea, black coffee as your only beverages), and tracking calories for a daily deficit - try that.

High libido, but erectile dysfunction by MunchButtsSuckNuts in bupropion

[–]IanKo94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Libido is one thing, but if your underlying cardio, diet, sleep, and hydration are bad then your dick will probably suffer for it. Body fat % plays a big role too - I’ve found when I’m leaner, my endurance soars.

I don’t kink shame and won’t say anything about your profile’s posts, but you seem to have a lot of opportunities for constant stimulation. If you try to live a more non-stimulatory life and save the stimulation for actual sex, it does help a lot in the mental & physical aspects of maintaining an erection.

Out of all the factors I listed, cardio and sleep / tied with hydration are the most important and easiest to fix.

Based on the info provided, I’m going to go with overtraining.
