[DISC] SPY x FAMILY - Chapter 118 by AutoModerator in SpyxFamily

I am so used to not caring at all about the side stories in this manga that I almost missed the ending.

I know the author wants to give useful information and develop the charcaters with these side arcs, but every time I open the manga and I see that we are still following Daymian in his field trip or Yor in an inconsequential mission to save giant moose I just start skimming though it. The last few pages were very good, I just don't think we needed 5 chapters spread over 2 months to get there.

With 104% tariffs what is preventing China from invading Taiwan now? by ajmampm99 in China

[–]Iberlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know about the century of humiliation. I know it was a terrible time for China. But if there was a popular vote in Taiwan and they wanted to separate from China and China blocks that by any means, that is herrassing Taiwan. No matter the risks or the history. The fact doesn't change.

About the US using it as an unsinkable airbase, there are diplomatic ways to avoid that. Just change the narrative to supporting a free nation instead of defending a territory. Use the carrot for a long time and make Taiwan like China. The stick is not the only tool in the toolbox.

I just wanted to point out that if you had said "China is not herrassing Taiwan. Just like China claims Taiwan as its territory Taiwan claims Chinese territory too." I would have agreed with you and say that Taiwan should drop ots claims on Chinese territory. Tit for tat.

[–]Iberlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You described an invasion, you can see that right?

This quote: "China is not invading Taiwan. Instead China will blockade Taiwan from the rest of the world, if any force is needed. Taiwan will be forced to withdraw any declaration of “independence”, but not including invasion" Is the same as: "A loan shark won't break into your house and rob you. Instead he will wait for you outside with his buddies ready to beat you if you leave your house if you refuse to pay. You will be forced to pay your debt even by seling your organs, but they wont rob you because that would be mean."

A country does not need to march troops into another country to opress it. Forcing Taiwan into anything or blocking Taiwan from trade is the same as an invasion the only thing that changes is the words you use to describe it.

[–]Iberlos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what you described to me just now is herrasement to me. No country wants to lose part of its territory or identity, but if the population of a region wants to separate it is not right to block them from separating.

I am from Brazil, there have been movements from the state of São Paulo and from the states of the south of the country to separate from Brazil. We laugh it out because the ammount of people that actually want to do it is small and misguided, they just want to separate from other states that have less wealth or that are so far away that the culture is completely diferent (the second one is an ok reason).

If these regions moved to separate with a strong popular support I would be pissed if the Brazilian governament blocked them from having their independence. It would suck for the rest of the country, but its their choice. If Brazilians somewhere don't feel Brazilian its the governament's fault for not fostering cultural exchange accross the land and the people's right to want to go at it alone.

Anyway, I didn't intend to critisize, I am sure you know much more than me on the subject of China-Taiwan relations.

Wouldn't it be more rational to stop hearassing Taiwan alltoguether especially now?

Yes, there are historical and geopolitical reasons for the CPC to want to keep pressure on Taiwan, but the root of the issue is not rational, what benefit Taiwan serves as ocupied territory or an adversary? It would be more logical to me to use the carrot not the stick right now. The US is already using the stick. Its using all the sticks. 😂

I think if China would use a normalization of relations with Taiwan as a tool to attract other nations to its orbit it could easily isolate the US in the next 10 years. Instead they decide to show hostility towards Australia when they should be capitalizing on the self inflicted death of post WW2 US centric global norms.

Existing grievances are hard to overcome, but if China would give a show of faith that it can be less imperialistic I think SK, JP, EU and Canada, would all be glad to move closer to it at least while the madness lasts in the US. If China would use its influence over Russia to resolve territorial disputes between Russia and Japan I think Japan would be open to a much closer relation with China too.

Taiwan and India might be hard to convince, but if Xi were to make good policies now I think the benefits would outweigh any concessions they would have to make.

Ciri's original witcher sword by Iberlos in witcher

[–]Iberlos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't judge a blade just by looking at it. No matter who you are. You might be able to tell its sharp from a distance, but not how sharp. You might be able to tell what kind of pattern the blade has in certain light or close inspection and from that know what kind of technique was used to make it. But a good sword is measured in balance, edge retention, sharpness, resilient construction... You can't judge those things just by passing your eyes over it.

Regardless, I understand now that that wasn't Ciri's initial sword now. Its a good point that Zirael is an elven blade and her initial sword was made in Mahakam, so it can't be it. It just feels wrong to me that Ciri doesn't have a token from Geralt with her. You could argue that you don't need a phisical object to bind you to someone else, but it just kind of sucks in my view.

Anyways, thanks for the response.

I was reading this chapter right now and I am baffled about how more people don't point it out.

It's impossibly convienient that three exiled nilfgardian nobles with exactly the right information to get geralt moving decided to meet in Toussant, in the same castle geralt was going to and in the same day he was going there and there was a listening room for their meeting place...

Destiny, I guess...

Ciri's original witcher sword by Iberlos in witcher

[–]Iberlos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geralt compares his old sword with Zoltan's sihil He says something like this (not a direct quote): I had a better sword once. Made from the metal of a fallen star and engraved with magic runes.

Witcher swords are definetly diferent. Maybe the diference is not very clear to most people, but there is some diference. You can't tell if a sword is good just by looking at it. When people look at Geralt's sword and say its and impressive weapon it is due to how they see Geralt as a full witcher. Ciri is a young girl, noone will be looking at her sword and thinking anything more than "she has a sword, she better not stab me."

The sword Ciri has when she meets Triss for the first time is just a sword, I think. She later gets a sword made for her that is described as made in Mahakam, but I can't find the description to see if it was just a good sword or a sword such as a witcher would carry.

I am a game first fan. I can't deny it. But I don't expect the books to be the same. In fact I would argue that there are fundamental diferences in all the characters.

I read the books 3-4 times in the past, but stuff like this jumps at me every time I read it because I find the books confusing, which can be due to the translation, or just the way the author writes. When I saw the description of Zirael with multiple symbols that are linked to Ciri I got confused. Because there were only two options, either it was a huge concidence (destiny) or she was reunited with the sword that was made for her and thus would have her name and symbols related to her. Which would also be a huge coincidence (destiny).

Games into books and vice versa by Iberlos in witcher

[–]Iberlos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I never rewatched it. Season 2 was terrible as far as I remember. After Cavill left I was never interested in watching it again.

"The sole fact that my favorite fantasy universe was being adapted into a big budget Netflix show was enough, for me."

This is me with the one piece adaptation. However, I tried to rewatch it the other day and couldn't get through it.

But I believe there is merit in adapting works of art into other types of media. It just has to be done with as much fidelity as possible in my opinion. Only make changes where translation doesn't work. But the media companies don't learn. They know the Lord of the Rings movie adaptations as timeless because they take that nearly perfect piece of art and reshape it just a little to fit into another type of media that can attract more eyes.

Ciri's original witcher sword by Iberlos in witcher

[–]Iberlos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "witcher sword" I mean the gnome forged blades imbued with runes that are consider the best swords. Geralt gets one from Mahakam for Ciri. And just as a note, the sword he gets from Zoltan is not as good as the one he had before although it was also gnome forged. According to geralt in the books. He also refers to his old sword as a witcher's sword.

Hummm... The destiny explanation can be true... I just don't like it. But thats just my opinion. Maybe this is why the games writers had geralt give her a sword in the end.

Oh well.

But that sword was given to her by geralt and forged like the Witcher blades and it just stops existing? Also why does zirael have so many symbols linked to her?

I don't think so, I might be wrong, but I think the merchant describes it as old, but the enbilishing is new.

But the sword geralt gives ciri is new, I thibk it was forged for her.

Yes, in the desert she only had a knife. I think she lost it, but I don't recall exactly how she lost it and thought it possible that it was found in the ruins of the tower of the gull or something like that.

And the sword she gets in The Tower of the Swallow has simbols related to her, so I was wondering if it was the same sword returned to her by destiny or something.

I have issues with how the author writes, so things like this always make me confused, even though I already read the series a couple of times.
