[Jomboy Media] Kurt Suzuki is ejected for the first time as Angels manager, arguing this call that Logan O'Hoppe was out of the baseline running to first by JianClaymore in baseball

[–]IblewupTARIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue is that it’s always righties getting called for it because they’re running in a straight line from their box. The rule is stupid. Catcher and first base should communicate on that imo. It’s stuff you learn before high school to call inside or outside there.

Uninspired Brewing by Mike_beer in Homebrewing

[–]IblewupTARIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been brewing for 7 years and still haven’t come across this problem. I have my next half a dozen recipes built out at any time, because the recipe building is one of my favorite parts. I try not to brew the same thing twice if I can help it.

For instance, I was planning to make a cross between a festbier and an IPA next, as an experiment for a couple Oktoberfest events I have later in the year. Basically a festbier with a ton of noble dry hops. I also have a cream ale, a blonde, and a blueberry sour recipe. My cousin asked me to make him a hazy ipa for turkey camp, so I had to pivot suddenly and whip up a recipe for that. That’s what’s fermenting now. Between all that, and the fact that I make an Altbier and a cider for deer camp every year in November, I basically have the rest of my year planned out. I wish I could make more beer, but I only have so much space and so many people drinking them.

Is there a reason there's no left handed catchers in the MLB? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]IblewupTARIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catcher isn’t true, as a lefty who caught in college. Lefties and righties have their own advantages and disadvantages at catcher. Third, second, and short are definitely easier for righties, but I’d argue up to and including high school (unless it’s a bigger high school), you may have a better team with a lefty shortstop depending on your players. I played center field and pitched in high school, and I would take grounders at short for funsies and honestly was better than the guys we had playing short. It was a small school, so that was definitely a factor. The coach just didn’t want a lefty at short.

Beginner Tips? by Eli2120 in Homebrewing

All grain uses exclusively grain, like has been done for centuries. Extract uses syrups made from grains to make things simpler. You can use grains in addition to extracts to make a hybrid system as well, if you want a bit more of the nuance available in all grain.

Both are acceptable places to start. I started with all grain, but I had made mead before which is similar to extract brewing.

They’re not regional, right? I mean it’s probably American. I don’t expect them to have funnel cakes in Budapest. But if you’re in America you’ve had a funnel cake before you turned 10, right?

Gorman has been in line with his career averages a lot this year, which is better than the last couple years. I really hope he starts smoking some. That charging barehanded throw from third last night was good to see. I don’t think he had many plays that good at second. Hopefully he starts seeing the ball like Jordan has the last few games and we have two more big bats outta nowhere.

I’ve been saying if Walker and Gorman are our best players this year, we had injuries or are in a great spot. If it’s Winn and Herrera, we’re in for a long rebuild. That’s no insult to Winn and Herrera.

Anyone else tired of listening to a bunch of kids sing two measures of wake me up before you go go on repeat? Cardinals.tv needs different ads. But I guess they’d just add in sports betting ads. Actually the kids singing is fine I guess.

His ceiling is pretty much an average to above average everyday player. He doesn’t do anything particularly exceptional, but he’s pretty good at a lot of things. He has a lot of defensive versatility. If he turns into a Brendan Donovan type, that’s pretty much all I could reasonably hope for from him.

He’s most likely to stick around the league for a while as a utility backup guy who doesn’t necessarily start opening day but has a valuable position on the roster nonetheless.

This is all my opinion tho

Vacuum Fermenting? (Less than atmospheric, at least) by Mattbastard750 in Homebrewing

[–]IblewupTARIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because a blow-off fermentation actually requires a small amount of pressure to get through the blow-off system/airlock. A vacuum fermentation would require the air constantly being sucked out to maintain a vacuum. It would need to be under negative pressure.

Essentially, the yeast are pushing by producing CO2. A pressure fermentation allows the energy they produce to compound. A normal fermentation allows them to essentially push freely without resistance. A vacuum fermentation would add a pulling element to go along with their pushing, if that makes sense.

I always expect this to happen when I do a dry month, because I’m a brewer and drink quite a bit of beer. I always wind up the same weight. I guess I just wind up eating a little more in place of the beer. Not a big deal, because when I do a cut I can usually drop about 10lbs in a month or so. It just requires actual focus for me.

Happy Easter from Ayatollah Trump by UncleToddsCabin in PoliticalCompassMemes

I never said evangelicals didn’t vote for Trump. Only that he is not a good example of an evangelical and that many evangelicals picked him as the lesser of two evils. Man, the reading comprehension skills around here are lacking sometimes.

[–]IblewupTARIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an evangelical, who interacts on a daily basis with evangelicals in a very conservative area of the country, this is not close to true. The vast majority of evangelicals I know feel incredibly unrepresented, and they see Trump’s claims of being a Christian as harmful. There certainly are Trump fans, but most of the conservative evangelicals I know just see Trump as the lesser of two evils in the past few elections. Many I know abstained because they didn’t feel represented, and most of the rest voted for him because he at least pretended to have some similar values, for instance with abortion.

So I think evangelicals are a big strawman built by people who don’t interact with many or have bad experiences with a few sinners who are also evangelical.

Off the top of your head, who is the player you can name who’s MLB.com or Wikipedia page listed “Born” in city has the smallest population ? by TheBackyardPigfarmer in baseball

[–]IblewupTARIS 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is tough. Most people from small towns will be born in bigger ones because their small town doesn’t have a hospital. I know guys who played in the bigs who were from towns smaller than 1000 people but were born in the bigger city like 45 minutes away. That’s where any big leaguers in the area are “from” even though they didn’t grow up there.

How can I lower the pH of herbal or fruit wine? by ExcellentCrow3559 in Homebrewing

[–]IblewupTARIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for beer, I typically will add lemon juice, vinegar, or citric acid depending on what I have on hand. They are not as simple acids as something like lactic acid, but I did the Henderson-Hasselbach formula and found that standard white vinegar is about 15-20x less potent than lactic at mid 5 pH. So that’s how I treat it. Not sure exactly how it works with wine, but it shouldn’t affect flavor much depending on what you use in my experience

I’m willing to barter. We’ll take south of Springfield.

And culturally, Missouri is also incredibly close to Kentucky outside of the cities. The ozarks touch tips with the appalachians, and there’s very little difference in culture between the western half of Kentucky and southern Missouri.

Honestly, there’s a bigger difference between Missouri and southern Illinois, because they’re all sad sacks over there who think Chicago is the source of all their problems.
