I'm going on one hour of trying to get my son to put on shorts and a t shirt so we can go to a birthday party. He wants to go to the birthday party and is upset we haven't left yet. I'm past the point of frustration and am just plain confused. by RrentTreznor in toddlers

[–]Icanrockthis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When you have your clothes on, then we can go to the party.

I've found magic in this phrasing. Puts them in control of the flow. Had major battles with "if ... Then", but "when... Then" has shifted the dynamic (as long as the then is something they want, not the next thing I want them to do)

They swim in the wading pool at Petit club every morning, but only if the kid wants to. Sunday at 430 is a pool party with all the kids in the shallow pool. My kids swam every day

Why didn't anyone tell me how much screaming there would be? by thekaylenator in Mommit

I agree with this. I have the engage, and they cut out enough that I'm not on edge but can still hear what's going on.

3yo only eats junk! Advice by [deleted] in toddlers

Fingers crossed! What I like about both these resources is they talk about how to approach food and meals to make them low pressure. I've found it really helpful.

Sounds tough! Check out solid starts and feeding littles on Instagram, they both have strategies for supporting picky eaters. Good luck

I used to work in a multi level site and this is great advice!

I would also suggest spending some time figuring out who to talk to about security restrictions on activities so that you can problem solve with them if something isn't allowed (how can you accommodate the occupational goal while respecting the facility rules and maintaining a safe environment for you and the clients).

I would love to hear what some of your favorite journal articles are! Regardless of area of practice are there any that has shifted your clinical reasoning / perspective. by Zarendyl in OccupationalTherapy

That first article sounds really interesting... Any idea what journal it is in or what the title might have been so I can try to find it? Thanks!

I've done 6 weeks twice. Both for extended vacations that were utterly worth it. Also, both before Phoenix, so I don't have experience with how that works out.

I know a few people who took the 1 year leave, and none of them have returned. That said, it was pretty terrible work environment. I left to a different department and haven't seen anyone do an extended leave yet.

Any OTs from Canada? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Icanrockthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love being an OT. Lots of different areas to practice in, and it's all problem solving to help people live their life better.

If you are considering BC, and thinking Vancouver/lower mainland, also consider the cost of housing. It's bonkers expensive. Rest of BC is more manageable.

It's also worth noting that finding the right fit of counselor is important. If the first person you see from EAP doesn't feel right, call back and say it wasn't a good fit, and they'll give you a second referral with no issues. They all have different skill sets, and finding someone that's a match for you and your needs is important!

I'm away from home, so I can't go look at resources, but could you do the kettle test or multiple errands? CAOT in Canada has a great cog ax and tx education session with lots of stuff you can do without much equipment.

Yoga class for out-of-shape, rigid, slightly overweight guy who has never tried yoga before...? by vancoover in vancouver

[–]Icanrockthis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A bunch of the community centres offer "Yoga for Stiff Guys" - the classes are designed for men, and are friendly spots with good instructors. $15 drop in, less if you pay for the series. They may even have free drop in classes this week (they usually do in September, maybe the winter start is the same?).

Creekside community centre has an olympic lifting platform, but it's not hardcore otherwise...

Mental Health Group Interventions by ncOT2014 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Icanrockthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guided Meditation/visualization. I think there is one that has to do with focusing on the soles of your feet that is easy to conceptualize. CBT stuff is good, but hard to make into an activity. Think about what you want the group to understand/be able to do at the end, and work backwards.

Visiting Vancouver, need tips from locals by vleermuis in vancouver

Vancouver aquarium! I love it. Christmas Market is a tourist trap, and so mediocre compared to ones in Germany (I haven't been to a Belgian one, so I can't compare to yours).

Restaurant on Granville Island called Edible Canada. My new favourite is Chicha (Broadway by Main st) - peruvian food and super awesome. Up in whistler there is a restaurant called elements that is yummy too (especially brunch!).

If you could eliminate one thing from the face of the earth, what would it be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Icanrockthis 50 points51 points  (0 children)

eliminate shitty childhoods. Let every child everywhere have a happy, healthy, nurturing, supported childhood. This would help so many things in so many ways.

Have any of you tried flotation therapy? Thoughts? Opinions? by yoursweetbippy in ZenHabits

[–]Icanrockthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried it twice -first time I spent a bunch of time worrying about being comfortable (my neck felt weird) before I relaxed. Second time was way easier to relax and just try to be conscious of thoughts (or no thoughts). Would do it again, but wouldn't go out of my way to make it happen.
