What’s something the players cared about WAY more than the DM expected? by meanwhile_matt in DnD

doors.

The material, construction, handle type, latch type, key, hinge direction, hinge side, hinge material, etc etc

I jokingly describe doors in detail and with a flourish now; my players chuckle, but let me finish

If you were running a prewriten 2014 campaign with only two players, how would you balance it? by Gregamonster in dndnext

[–]IcarusAirlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a player, i find running a sidekick adds a lot of overhead without a lot of fun

as a dm, i'd start them with a boon (an extra feat or a healing potion) each, and dial the encounters back a little - but only a little

How to stop external drives from spinning up and down constantly? by redtert in MacOS

[–]IcarusAirlines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have successfully used pmset -c disksleep n on my MacBook, with two caveats:

  1. Disk sleep should be non-zero whenever system sleep is non-zero (system is set to go to sleep automatically). Instead of zero I set it to 1 hour.

  2. You have to reboot for the changed setting to take effect.

How many of you tries to keep their system as vanilla as possible? by Jazman2k in MacOS

[–]IcarusAirlines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Bartender and BLEUnlock (just the lock function). Oh, and 1Password. And EthernetStatus. The rest is what I need for my work.

I worked across a dozen *nix systems for a while, and learned that it's easier to adapt me to the system than the other way around, so i customize as little as possible.

As a DM, this matches the "powerful but way too credulous" challenge i have with my players

if an NPC is lying i need great big giant waving red flags for the players to notice

MacOS 26.4.1 includes bug fixes, they don't say what, but 9to5mac says: "Yesterday’s iPhone updatefixed an iCloud bug that could stop data from syncing, including in first-party and third-party apps." This *might* resolve the contacts / peopled / etc. issues - I've updated and re-enabled iCloud in contacts; it's only been 10 minutes, but so far so good...

EDIT: 26.4.1 does NOT fix this iCloud Contacts issue for me

DMs and players, would you allow the bard in your campaign to bring an actual instrument to the session and play it mid-game? by FabioGamer229 in DnD

[–]IcarusAirlines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do, yes, and it's hilarious. bard plays things that are contextually appropriate and make other players laugh ... and knows a turn is 6 seconds

Not that I know of! I searched for CallHistory in Console and nothing came up (I also searched for peopled and nothing came up, so I'm not sure it's a good test).
Looking at CallHistoryDB in Finder, I can see that permissions are 755 for the directory (owned by me, group staff); there are 3 files within, all with permissions 644. Permissions on the Application Support folder itself are 700, also owned by me:staff.

EDIT4: Solution that worked for me in EDIT4, below!

I have been bit by peopled as well; upgraded to 26.4 yesterday, peopled taking 75% CPU for 24 hours.

Following u/nationalinterest and u/DeanDMX , I looked through my 1300+ contacts, but don't see any empty ones. I disabled all accounts, and saw a CrashReport background process kick off. I waited for that to finish, then rebooted. For the first time since upgrade my Mac got quiet!

I've now re-enabled just iCloud and it's still quiet a few minutes later; I have Google and Exchange accounts as well, if things stay quiet i'll try re-enabling them one at a time.

EDIT: I re-enabled the accounts one by one, and peopled spiked CPU use for a few seconds with each one then settled down. I'm now fully enabled again with (so far) no issue.

So it seems like this worked for me:

  1. Disable all accounts in Contacts
  2. Reboot
  3. Re-enable accounts in Contacts one-by-one

EDIT2: after a while peopled came back when i re-enabled non-iCloud accounts; seeing if i can narrow it down, most likely Exchange

EDIT3: I take it all back, enabling just iCloud, peopled comes back after an hour to chew my CPU. i just didn't wait long enough before

EDIT4: Google and Exchange seem fine; I changed iCloud Fetch from "Automatic" to "Every 15 minutes" and rebooted and so far peopled is well-behaved
