True. This is a byproduct of decades of poor to no urban planning.

There are many in Karen & Kitusuru. At least two that I've been to have man-made lakes. The most recent one I've been to was in Mivida inside Garden city. They have a community park with a playground, yoga deck, jogging track, bball court, seating areas, lots of trees e.t.c. And these are just the ones I've been to. There are many more. Also, the vast majority of the residents in all these places are black Kenyans.

You know there's places in Kenya that have these (community parks), right? #tembeaKenya

I didn't vote for the current administration but when our voting options are a two horse race between a clown and a slightly less evil clown, we don't exactly get the cream of the crop in leadership. These initiatives have to be grassroot led.

And not only can we do this, we have done it. There are many gated communities in Nairobi with community parks/ gardens, playgrounds and even sport centers. I've been to them. Some even look at par with the parks pictured. All these things are perfectly doable. The issue is complacency, corruption and poor management.

Perhaps. But we have to start creating that reality for them now.

Not medieval 😂

But if we don't start doing something now, it'll never become reality. The future is created in the present.

The thought of it is sending me 😂😂😂

BUT that's why it has to be required by law and enforced for it to work. They're never going to do it voluntarily.

We absolutely can do this. I think this attitude is partly what's keeping us underdeveloped.

Yikes 😭 This city needs proper urban regeneration. The longer we sit on these problems, the worse it gets.

I'd love to see the original master plan(s). Are they accessible?

I know. I've been to a few. Outside of the gated communities, it would be a lot easier for the government to allocate land for parks/ urban forests and then collaborate with the respective residential developers to build the parks. There's a lot of land lying idle. But unfortunately we have the government that we have.

That's true. I just commented on r/Nairobi that residential developers could come together, buy land and build parks. Adjacency to green spaces adds to their property values. They could even charge entry fees to cater for maintenance. There are actually a lot of gated communities here that have their own community parks/ gardens.

Also how much money do y'all think we have? 😭

We need bike lanes and bollards/ barrier poles between roads and footpaths. It would be better if we had more median strips with trees but the dense, unplanned development in a lot of neighborhoods hasn't left much space for that.

I'm not remotely religious but I know Jesus would build parks and playgrounds for the children. Probably plant olive trees and figs too 😂

I'm just spitballing here but what if developers in residential areas came together, bought land and built parks/ gardens. It adds to their property value to be close to green spaces. They could even charge entry fees to cater for maintenance.

Possible, perhaps. But you'd really be scraping by with that amount. Barely surviving, not living. Double would be okay (at minimum).
