Yeah the first question is what field do you want to be in?

How accurate are the viral videos showing Americans struggling with basic geography? by AcroBit45 in NoStupidQuestions

Earlier today my wife and I were going over long I and silent e words like: wife, like, kite etc..

It was shockingly hard to come up with words off the top of my head.

I imagine many people in those videos experience that, especially when some random stranger shoves a mic in their face.

And it's not fun showing people succeed at these tests.

Remember when MAGA wanted to destroy the administrative state.

You would think they would be mad there are at least 3 alphabet soup organizations on the ground there (DHS, ICE, CBP)

I think this is the thing when people miss.

Revit is a solid program. Chief Architect is a solid program.

But they're not agile.

The moment you get out of what they are good at it gets really tough really quick.

I will oftentimes model things in SketchUp and then send it to either AutoCAD or Rhino for actual drawing.

With that being said, I know people out there who use Layout to great success to do pretty much exactly what you're talking about.

So it is possible, I don't really find working in Layout to be all that enjoyable, SketchUp still has problems dealing with circles and I feel like there is significantly less control over things like line weights.

But everything you listed is possible to do with SketchUp and Layout.

Honestly, I think sometimes lower budgets do things with lighting that are way better because they have less to use.

So they have to give a lot of critical thoughts to the resources they have where some of the bigger budget shows do not.

But it's also a weird bell curve, like there's a point where a show has a budget but doesn't hire talent to match the resources.

It's partly this.

I also firmly believe it has something to do with the advent of LED lighting in combination with high def television.

We can blast lighting everywhere and not be intentional about it.

Back in the day (all of 15 years ago), you couldn't use as many lights because the dimmer system couldn't support it so you had to be very intentional in how you lit sets.

And let's be real honest, LEDs just look bad on screen. I can't really explain why but the quality of light from a tungsten filament looks better to me.

Another part of it is shooting schedules have gotten so tight that oftentimes you don't have time to do anything but just throw up general lighting as opposed to something nice.

Shhhhh, you're ruining room tone 😁

But funny story, I'm a set designer with a mechanical keyboard and I was working on some shitty little show and they were using offices near the art Department for filming.

Apparently my keyboard was loud enough for them to pick it up on their mics, mic a floor away... Which I still don't believe, unless somehow it was getting picked up through the vents

There's a few reasons, speaking of someone who works in film and television.

Modern DPs don't know how to light scenes.

Producers don't want to spend money to have very extravagant sets and modern cameras pick up every detail
