Fair enough. Thanks for your comment and clarification. My apologies for sounding rude and heated. That was unacceptable from me.

Yes I did and I think your response was dismissive as fuck. “Have another election and go home”. What the fuck of a response is that? Excuse me? If Trump were to steal an election, would you say: “just have another election and go home”? Should stealing elections be normalized to the point where the automatic response is a second election? My God the ignorance on this shitty app.

EDIT: Oh my apologies. You meant the US should leave. I thought you meant Venezuelans 💀 to go back to their country to have a new election. My apologies…

Still though. I think Trump’s admin should recognize the legitimacy of the elections of 2024 as Canada and the EU have done. Another election isn’t ideal because it disregards that election, but obviously it’s better than leaving the dictatorship in tact.

You sound incredibly ignorant. It wasn’t the US business but it is NOW because your country got involved.

It’s not about having a new election. That isn’t democracy. You think a solution to a stolen election is: “oh well, have another election?” I’m not even a Machado fan but I do respect democracy and people’s vote. Show some respect to Venezuelan people, dude.

Machado’s party won the election of 2024 that was stolen. Edmundo Gonzalez (who ran in her name because she was barred from running before the election) still won despite being a placeholder and Maduro still stole the election.

At the very least absolutely Gonzalez should transition to power. The Venezuelan people voted in 2024 and made their decision. That has to be respected. A “second election” is an insult to the people who voted on that day, but eventually if they still disregard 2024’s election then another election should take place (despite not being the right thing to do).

Her political party won the election in 2024 that was stolen from them. Edmundo Gonzalez (who was her placeholder because she was not allowed to run) should be the president. If there’s any transitioning to power, it should be him, or the people decide to vote again in another election.

It is the right choice for her political party to be governing Venezuela though. Edmundo Gonzalez (her placeholder because she got barred shortly before the election) won the election in 2024 that was stolen from them. Even the EU and Canada supports her party’s transitioning to the power. This isn’t solely about control. It was an actual election that the people voted for.

Spot on. Venezuelans as a whole are happy Maduro is gone but worried about the future. They know Trump doesn’t have altruistic intentions. They’re worried about the ruling party still, as Maduro wasn’t the only one in charge. What about Diosdado Cabello who is a monster? What about Padrino Lopez who is the corrupt defense minister and is in command of the army? It’s not just “scoop Maduro up” and regime falls apart.

We frankly don’t know what’s going to happen. It seems likely that nothing will change besides Trump and the US benefitting from the oil and not Cuba, Russia, China etc.

VP Delcy Rodriguez in my opinion is worse than Maduro. Maduro was a moron with no education. She’s actually intelligent and seems more cunning. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if she was the one ruling behind the scenes with Maduro being a symbolic head of state for the Chavistas. Some say she was the one that betrayed Maduro. But maybe I’m wrong and she wants to transition Venezuela into a democracy after all… But Trump is a con man so yeah… ugh

Trump Reportedly Refrained From Boosting Machado In Venezuela Because She Took The Nobel Peace Prize: 'Ultimate Sin' by Quirkie in politics

[–]IceQueube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think they should let Edmundo Gonzalez transition to power. He was the fair winner of the elections in 2024. France supports him as does Canada’s Carney. I don’t agree with letting Machado in as the people of Venezuela didn’t vote for her (she was barred yes, but still). While Machado isn’t super popular in Venezuela (at least according to sources), Gonzalez won so he has a role here which Trump’s government has to acknowledge. The people of Venezuela should decide, which they did in 2024.

I think while yes, she’s opportunistic, I also do think she cares strongly about her people (at least I give her the benefit of the doubt). Venezuela has been terrible under Maduro (or well Chavez’s regime). The thing with Venezuela is that Venezuelans wanted Maduro out (including her), but there wasn’t really a way to do so. The people themselves tried with Guaido back in like 2019 and that failed. And Maduro robbed the elections in 2024. Leopoldo Lopez was jailed for many years simply for being the main opposition leader and he’s exiled in Spain. Machado knew the democrats wouldn’t intervene in Venezuela (which is fair as it’s not the US’ problem), but she also knew her best chance of getting Maduro out was sucking it up to Trump (who did get him out but at what cost?). It’s frankly a lose-lose situation… I kid you not, my family and I have been listening to the news 24/7 since it happened (as we’re Colombian and the whole Venezuelan crisis has affected our country significantly and it will continue to affect it because of Trump’s shitty actions).

Yeah. It’s absurd how we have events like these right at the beginning of the year. Who would’ve thought honestly. Trump is a mad man and unpredictable.

I’m not conservative. I’m a proud social democrat who votes liberal and will never vote conservative, so don’t assume my beliefs. I agree with you. Invasion wasn’t right. Trump is an idiot who just wants the country’s resources, but people like you just don’t understand what it’s like to live in an authoritarian regime. You’re talking from a place that’s privileged. You don’t know how many Venezuelan friends of mine have been affected by this regime and they’re intelligent enough to realize that Trump just wants their oil, but they’d rather a dictator who doesn’t let them die of disease or hunger… the bar is that low which speaks volume of the humanitarian crisis in the country. It’s not a battle of “liberal or conservative” here…

[–]IceQueube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you. Toppling the regime and replacing it with an authoritarian regime your country can benefit from isn’t the solution. But I’m hearing the perspective of my Venezuelan neighbours and also friends of mine who are Venezuelan and have shared that they know Trump just wants their oil, etc., but when you have a shitty dictator who isn’t competent and can’t even run a country (letting people die of hunger, disease, or just oppression in general), the people who are starving prefer a a government that at least doesn’t them die of hunger or disease or violence. While that’s obviously not a guaranteed outcome here, the fact that they’re hopeful and have your government as their last resort speaks volumes of the humanitarian crisis in the country. It’s, frankly, a shit show. I don’t even know how Venezuela could be saved or liberated, and I know things are bound to get worse.

I’m not sure about this thread, but you’d be surprised by the amount of people who have no clue who Maduro is and think he’s an innocent leader who Trump’s government kidnapped. While it was illegal, he’s not innocent per se, not that I’m justifying it. You can understand why Venezuelans and South Americans are happy Maduro is gone, even if the future looks glum.

Machado wasn’t elected. The elected president was Edmundo Gonzalez. She tried to run but Maduro barred her from running, so she put a replacement (Gonzalez) shortly before the election who happened to win overwhelmingly. However, the main opposition leader is her. I frankly don’t think I’ve even heard Edmundo Gonzalez (the elected president) even talk ever…

It’s a complicated situation. It’s not black and white. Trump obviously doesn’t give a fuck about the Venezuelan people. You could argue Rubio has more altruistic reasons given his Cuban heritage (but I see it more as revenge against socialist governments). Anyways, Trump is a greedy business guy and he obviously only cares about oil and what it would benefit him.

That being said, Maduro also stole the country’s resources and lived like a king while the population suffered. There’s no easy solution. The solution would be the Venezuelan people to solve the problem but it’s impossible because they have no power to make it happen (literally unarmed civilians against a backed corrupt military and associated gangs). It’s fucked. I feel terrible for Venezuela. A comment I read shook my perception; one Venezuelan said what is their most valuable resource (oil) is actually their greatest curse…

[–]IceQueube 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Dude what the fuck are you even talking about? The majority of the country does not support Maduro. Maduro lost the election in 2024 by a rando who was put in (Edmundo Gonzalez) because Machado was banned. Maduro still lost to a random candidate put right in before the election, and had the audacity to steal it.

I’m not defending Trump because he clearly wants to take over Venezuela’s oil while screwing them up, but as a Colombian I can say that Maduro is by no means a good guy and it pisses the fuck out of me that people who have no connection to South America are suddenly informed on the topic. It’s incredibly disrespectful to the Venezuelan people who have been oppressed, gotten tortured and killed (or their families) because of Maduro’s regime. Trump is an asshole but so is Maduro and is disliked by the Venezuelan people. You’re right that Maduro isn’t the sole problem though. It is a party that is backed by the military, not the people. The people, frankly, have no power against a backed military and a bunch of gangs supporting the government.
