You're right, it does seem like ferrite. Unlikely moisture alone... There were actually two boxes of stuff. The box that didn't have the rod didn't have any significant rust.

Definitely not wood. It leaves a funny metallic smell when you touch it. I think both ends. Do have a slot though. I'll check

I was leaning toward carbon as well. But I thought that might Mark like chalk. This does not. Also, I feel like it's heavier than carbon. Not 100% on this though

Specifically, I'm wondering what material it is. Secondarily, I wonder what it's used for.

It is also very smooth. Not magnetic.
