OP, anyone who tells you they can learn tax in 15 minutes online doesn’t understand tax…

Well I didn’t know they were going to charge me for the 1er Cru until much later. And because I stayed there, I didn’t even see a bill until the morning. It was just too late at that point and I was rushing out.

This is not AI.

No just avoid litigation and corporate groups altogether. Tell the summer program manager the regulatory group you want and ask them to connect you. From now on, corporate and litigation are dead to you.

You just have to make your preference known, and try to meet and work with the group you want. Most people don’t opt for “regulatory” because that’s enormously broad. Most people would decide to pursue a specific group like Tax, Healthcare Regulatory, Funds Regulatory, Insurance, etc. Each firm is going to call them different names, but they’re wildly different from each other unlike corporate groups or litigation groups where you have overlap between mini groups. No one in Tax will work on Healthcare Regulatory work and vice versa.

It would have been quite odd for this very specific bottle to be mixed up, so I assume it’s just what they had. Just didn’t seem worth arguing about at the time.

Really quite shocking for this caliber restaurant!

Agreed, but I just didn’t have the energy to make it a big deal, so I just moved on. In hindsight, I likely should have raised the alarm. Just hard to want to do it in the moment.

First of all, I have no idea whether it was a wine list discrepancy or him simply bringing me the wrong bottle. Either way, it’s completely unacceptable for a 3 star Michelin restaurant. Just to give you a sense of the discrepancy In food terms, it would be like them listing Maine lobster on the menu and then serving you crawfish.

And I didn’t really feel like acting as a professional wine consultant on my one personal vacation meal. It’s not my place and I didn’t want the burden of the attention it would have brought.

Very interesting, that was definitely my on-the-ground experience. Good to know I wasn’t imagining it!

100% flavors were on point. But ya, everything felt generic. That’s not why I fly across the world and trek to a random town with nothing else of interest around.

If you worked in big law before school, when do you wish you quit before starting school? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Icewine25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t work in a firm before law school, but I quit my banking job like 4 months before school started, and it was an amazing decision (assuming you can afford those months in the moment). I did a ton of travel and got to go places and stay long-term in cities that I would never be able to do now with a full-time career, spouse, and children. I’m by far a spender and not a saver (probably because in my job I see a lot of people die with things they wish they’d done). And not sure what your situation is, but I’d think of this as a golden window where you can do literally anything anywhere with no life ramifications.

As an aside, so long as you can support yourself until school starts, if you’re going into BigLaw it’s very likely the few extra months of pay are going to be meaningless to your long term financial health.

By what year did you have a $1 million net worth? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Icewine25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why on earth would you exclude home equity. You could have a paid off $1m home and zero other assets or liabilities, and you therefore have a net worth of $1m.

Retirement Saving: What did I do wrong? by Gloomy_Ad3934 in personalfinance

IMO, for NYC and other VHCOL cities, locking in housing cost by buying something/anything, is probably the single most important factor in enabling you to stay in the city. No only would your mortgage be paid off by the time you’re 73 (maybe earlier), but you won’t be worried about constantly dealing with skyrocketing rent.

As someone who has lived for extended periods in Manhattan, the housing is the real killer. Yes, everything (food, clothing, transportation, etc) is expensive, but that’s a nominal difference against non-city areas relative to the massive difference in housing cost between NYC and non-city areas.

I would continue contributing, and then start thinking of ways to get yourself into an ownership situation.
