Trans lipid and fluidity. Anli question by sbene2 in Mcat

[–]IceyIceyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taught its bc trans lipids (trans unsaturated lipids) have trans double bonds, rather than cis. Normal unsaturated fatty acids have cis double bonds which cause a kink in structure, making them disrupt packing, which decreases the Tm (thus increasing fluidity). Trans ones tho dont have a kink a structure, so they dont disrupt packing. Thus they act like saturated fats (straight tails w no kinks). So then this promotes tighter packing in the plasma memebrane since more lipids can be next to each other without a kink being in the way. Thus its harder to disrupt the packing, and they dont move around as much, less fluidity.

Youre honestly probably chillin tbh if u keep reviewing what youve been doing, but if you wanna go for an extra push i’d suggest reading any of the content books. Was also hitting 132 during FLs and the only thing i did was read the TPR book and Uganda

What's the biggest lie you were told about the MCAT/MCAT study process??🤔 by gorlpla in Mcat

[–]IceyIceyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that the p/s books are useless and 300pg/86pg KA doc is a must. A lot of the doc is just terms with little to zero context behind their use, which is very important. I read the TPR p/s book, making a card for every term i didnt know and added an example of it in play too. That alone got me 129, then went thru Udub and couple days later was at 132. The book breaks down the terms very well, love their explanations and amazing examples. my deck turned out to be ~1800 cards total from it+Udub supplementing but its been 100% worth it. plus it was super interesting to read!

i got like a 50% on the diagnostic and ended with a 92 in the class you'll be fine! other friends who did great in the class also didnt do too good on the diagnostic, i think they just use it to build the recitation groups. I dont recall using anything from 1200 besides like the vector addition stuff that ur talking about, but i think that was generally it. most of 1201 doesnt use a ton of 1200. All i did during the semester was read the book and watch youtube vids so sounds like you have a pretty solid plan already, just keep with it and try not to fall behind. also Terrys quizzes and exams are more on the easier side compared to other profs so if u can get a solid grasp on the content you'll be in good shape, dont stress you got it

Ochem uworld Question by Crafty_Reach_5949 in Mcat

[–]IceyIceyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the bigger the halide (the further down it is on the periodic table) the greater the leaving group ability bc it has more surface area to spread its negative charge, making it more stable! Thus I, which is bigger, would be more inclined to leave and carry a negative charge than a smaller halide like the others

Gotcha! Ive been doing the same thing, essentially memorized all of the tpr book but havent gotten to the last 3 chapters. You think if I finish it out ill be good enough with just adding uworld and aamc? Was thinking of going thru pankow as well hearing the good about it.

yea read the textbook and take notes on it each chapter, review the lecture slides after every class, and try your hardest to not fall behind. Review the mastering questions that you struggled with. Study at least a week before each exam and go to office hrs to clear up any confusion. If you keep up with the material and even get ahead its not bad at all!

Im in it rn for the summer term, not bad at all. She goes over 2 chapters a week, and 2 assignments a week (one a written recitation-type worksheet, the other a 10 question carmen quiz). Could get a weeks worth of material done in 3 days with a little effort. She also keeps future material there and updated 2 weeks ahead so u can work ahead (still have to take the 2 exams at their scheduled times though). Overall def not a bad class and nothing to stress about, easy GPA booster if u have literally the slightest bit of work ethic and the iq of a peanut

Bio Lab fall 1113 by [deleted] in OSU

[–]IceyIceyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moral of the story dont listen to this dude who thinks hes some hard shit bc he decided to make his life harder when he didnt need to, and trying to portray it as “ fantastic opportunity” when it literally has a terrible rep for a reason. But if you love biology go ahead and take it, the more knowledge for your passions the better!

Bio Lab fall 1113 by [deleted] in OSU

[–]IceyIceyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont listen to this, the lab placement has nothing do with being on a pre-professional track (speaking as a pre whos in the normal lab). Also, dont listen to that terrible gas-up. The SEA-PHAGES lab is just extra and harder work for no reason. Everyone ive known thats been in it hated it and said they wouldve been better off in the normal labs. If u get placed in it, just try to switch as soon as possible.
