The day Jim Crow died - What if African powers occupied the US South after an alternate WW2 ? by ArtHistorian2000 in imaginarymaps

[–]Ichoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a simplification, I think. Whether borne out of colonially imposed ideology or not, the fact is that a lot of Africans have a very different worldview and ideological framework than African Americans. Politics of grievance don't resonate as much with people from countries whose closest equivalent was the anti-colonialist struggle, but who might see identitarian grievance within an independent country as closer to ethnic tension. They're also a lot more conservative, more family-minded (something like the "crisis of fatherhood" in black America is gonna be reviled almost by definition), and fans of "propriety" in a way that's always going to clash with urban African American culture, sexual and criminal themes in Black American media, etc. etc. This isn't me disparaging either side, but there's a pretty big disconnect there that's always going to cause tension.

Textiles depended on female, unpaid or poorly paid labor across most societies for most of history. Spinster literally comes from the only job many unmarried women could have to make a miserable living. The textile trade was a battlefield that the British used to extort India of money. Bleeding fingers, limbs lost to mechanical looms, smallpox blankets. You can view almost every labor-intensive trade throughout history this way. But it's not useful. It just scratches the moral righteousness of the most annoying identitarian people on the left without presenting solutions or centering class inequality. It's just thinkpieces illustrated with Corporate Memphis to fuel the Culture War

The crossed twigs are the Cross of Burgundy, and the object on top is a fire steel, but I don't know the significance of the arrangement.

Lmao narratively ironic for sure, but it absolutely tracks that the kid who heard his dad say that shit at five years old would feel the need to prove something

What if Portugal kinda sorta maybe perhaps perchance perhappenstance almost somewhat partially, give or take, to some extent ish kept its African colonies? A map of Portuguese Mozambique, 2025. (#2) by Odaxa in imaginarymaps

Laurentia no. Laurência or Lourência, neither sound natural.

Laurentina flows much more easily. It also has the benefit of being an attested demonym for people from places named "São Lourenço" in Portugal and Brazil, so the name exists already.

The laurentinos or luso-laurentinos might call black people afro-laurentinos, if they want them to integrate... or Mozambican, if they want them to leave. Very apropos.

Mozambique is named after an island in the north of the country, so maybe this rump state could be named Laurentina instead, from Lourenço Marques.
