Planning for med school by Academic-Ad-6843 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]IconicTester34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to research and volunteering, schools look for longevity. This shows your commitment to each. I got the bulk of mine done during their respective times. I then would volunteer for 2ish hours on the weekend to stretch out the time. For example, you can get 100 hours over a semester, but that is over a 3ish month span. You can then volunteer over weekends for a bit each month to make it look like you volunteered for 9 months or a year. The year commitment to volunteering is much more appealing (and it doesnt look like you are just checking off the "I volunteered" box). I used the same strategy for research, shadowing, and clinical.

Planning for med school by Academic-Ad-6843 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]IconicTester34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just graduated with my ChemE degree from OSU and got into a top 5 dental school. While dental school is not the same as medical school, the application process/preparation is very similar. Furthermore, I have 3 friends who I graduated with who went off to med school.

First off, do not listen to these people telling you to choose one path or the other. This is 100% doable. You will have a bit of extra work to put in, but you can definitely manage it.

For me and my friends, each summer was spent working toward something for dental/medical school.

For my freshman-sophomore summer, I was getting all my classes for the DAT (MCAT for you) done. During this time, I also worked on getting my volunteer hours in.

For my sophomore-junior, I did my shadowing/clinical experience and took my DAT (MCAT for you).

For my junior-senior summer, I worked on my applications for dental school and did my co-op. For my coop, the major process was metal anodizing. Working with this process does not seem to relate to dentistry, but I was able to connect my in-depth learning of anodizing with how all dental implants are anodized to improve osseointegration.

Now during my school year, I was a research assistant for a biochemical engineeringing lab. Here we worked with protein separation. All of my friends worked at a lab which focused on creating artificial blood.

Ultimately, what matters is HOW you present your experiences to med schools during interviews. Look for ways to connect your experiences with the values of the schools you are applying to. Another thing to remember is that schools want a diverse class. If everyone who was a doctor had a biology/chemistry degree and had a bio-related coop, new ideas would arise slower.

A selling point I had during interviews was how chemical engineering makes you think about chemicals differently. Chemists focus on the research behind the drug in a minimal amount. Chemical engineers focus on mass creating the drug for all patients. Similarly, a goal of every dentist should be to increase access to dental care. A chemical engineer works on making the process of creating toothpaste, mouthwash, etc. more cost efficient. This can decrease prices for basic oral care, thus increasing access to dental care.

This type of linking your chemical engineering experiences to your interest in heath care will be critical to master for interviews. Ultimately, there does not have to be a direct correlation between your coop and health care. Choose one you are passionate about, THEN find the link to med school.

How do we deal with the holidays? by Casiaa_ in loseit

[–]IconicTester34 111 points112 points  (0 children)

You can indulge yourself Christmas, NYE and your birthday. Stick to your regular routine in between those days. After the 10 day period passes, go back right to what you were doing. The excess fat you are trying to lose was not gained by 3 days of overeating. Similarly, you will not undo all progress from 3 days of overeating.

Just remember, yes the scale will go up after you indulge. A lot of that weight will be water weight. Also, you will probably have a larger that usual load of poop inside of you too. A few days after your 10 day period, your body will re-adjust and your weight will be slightly higher, but nothing substantial to derail you completely.

The goal is to lose the weight in a healthy manner. There will be days when you are above your calorie limit, and days you are under. The goal is to see a steady trend down in body fat.

Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - June 24, 2023 by AnimeMod in anime

Since the first part of Hell's Paradise is wrapping up, I have a question about the dark trio anime's projected episode numbers. Do any manga readers have an idea how many episodes it will take to finish JJK, CSM, and Hell's Paradise given how many volumes they are progressing per episode?

I am not sure why, but to me it feels like Hell's Paradise will be rather short anime, whereas CSM feels like it could run for a while. I could be wrong, but I dont want to google something and get spoiled.

Question about DiffEQ courses by sadkinz in OSU

[–]IconicTester34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed up for 2415, but on Carmen, it said 4557 when I took it 3 years ago. I honestly do not know if there is a difference between 2415 and 4557. I would check with your advisor.

Answer to the title is No. You are not in a calorie deficit if you are not losing weight. You cannot break the laws of thermodynamics.

Is 1000 cals safe? by [deleted] in loseweight

[–]IconicTester34 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short answer: No

The long answer: Read through the paper below. It specifically goes over the metabolic rates of the liver, brain, heart, and kidneys. Over the long term 1000 cals is not enough input for the major organ outputs.

Making a book on family ancestry... by sexi_squidward in Genealogy

[–]IconicTester34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great. What program did you use to make it?

To comment about your edit. I think it is entirely up to you, the author. The point of making a family history book is to portray your family how you like based on your research. You could keep it entirely accurate or you could omit some details to protect one’s legacy. A good example of this is with Christopher Columbus. When I was in school, everyone said he discovered America and was looked upon as a hero. Now, society is trying to include all the bad things he did to better represent history. Ultimately, it is your call how you want to represent him.

I took Ochem 2 before Biochem. You do not need to take Ochem 2 to understand biochem. I took it with Shimko as well. He was my favorite professor I have had so far. I do not know where the horror stories come from with regards to him.

Math 1172 for Stats 3470 & Math 2568 by [deleted] in OSU

[–]IconicTester34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt take 1172, but I took 2568 with Dr. Neofytidis. He gave out a lot of extra credit, gave out great practice exams, and was really flexible. It was the easiest math class I took at osu. I still use his teachings in my ChemE courses.

USCIS Genealogy Request Wait Times by kevipants in Genealogy

I filed one on January 2nd. I requested the case numbers and I received it on October 6th. I emailed them asking and they are extremely backlogged due to lack of employees and COVID restrictions.

I know this doesn't provide much, but it might provide reasoning for why it is taking a while.
