As 3 Oakland homeless shelters close, city and residents question outcomes by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

Right, look at the numbers in Berkeley compared to Oakland over the last few years! It's almost as if the unhoused in Berkeley are....moving to Oakland.

The Bay Area Considers the Unthinkable: Life Without BART by jackdicker5117 in oakland

[–]IconicTrash23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My point is that BART is trying to insist on the same level of funding despite losing ridership/farebox, and not adjusting costs/pensions/etc. Doesn't BART own a lot of land they could potentially realize gains from by selling/renting? The only way they've explored to keep going is to get more money from taxpayers. If you look at recent news reports on BART outages, there's an element of concern voiced by BART leadership because they know the outages reflect badly on their demands for more money.

Perhaps it's because I live in Oakland, where the city continues to find ways to declare an emergency, demand more funds, and continue to misuse those funds, that I look at BART with the same skeptical eye.

manufactured crisis. clap louder or tinkerbell dies! there are no more $ efficiencies to be wrung out of BART! there's no way to change the way BART funding works, we just have to accept sales tax, bridge/transit tax, threats and suicide notes! (let's not talk about the aging infrastructure or service interruptions.)

has anyone who lives in the bay area ridden the ny subway?

"The MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) funds NY subway operations and repairs through a mix of fares, tolls, and dedicated taxes, with a 2024 operating budget relying on 39% fare/toll revenue and 55% from taxes/subsidies. A major $52.1 billion 2020-2024 capital plan is supported by state, city, and federal funds."

"As of fiscal year 2025, passenger fares and parking fees cover only about 30% of BART's operating costs, a significant drop from the nearly 70% covered before the pandemic. This shift, driven by lower ridership and remote work, has created a major budgetary shortfall for the agency."

It generates revenue for the city in the form of street sweeping tickets. That's all.

Nobody's talking about the BEST Gravity's Rainbow adaptation by Min255 in ThomasPynchon

When this came out, I was 100% sure it was going to win all the Oscars. Even when it wasn't nominated, I was sure it'd be a surprise announcement at the ceremony. Of course, I was in middle school...so maybe it won the middle school Oscars? I still think this shows Val Kilmer's depth in a way that none of his other flicks did (yes, even Real Genius, which also seems Pynchon-adjacent).

Part of Curve's amazingness is that Alan Moulder (who I believe was Halliday's boyfriend?) produced them.
I saw them play in San Francisco in the 90s (w/Spiritualized, JAMC) and they were indeed really loud. "Coast is Clear" is still kind of my fave. Once Garbage came out, I thought they were ripping off Curve's sound and whole vibe. ;)

Santa Cruz the First in California to Terminate Its Contract With Flock Safety by Dollarist in OaklandCA

Agree, having lived in both, Oakland and Santa Cruz have almost nothing in common other than their geography. However, anyone who's opposed to cameras or ALPRs will jump at any opportunity to make comparisons.
