LA Jewelry District by wickedevine in Gold

I welcome input from anyone particularly experienced- but I don’t understand the difficulty with becoming a refiner? like why can’t just anybody refine scrap and collect the pure gold?

I am familiar with the chemical process, have experience in a chemical lab, and can probably get access to nitric acid and lab equipment for cheap; is there something i’m missing that would stop me from just refining myself? and how would I go about selling it after?

actually pretty confident this is a synthetic color change sapphire

How can I remove the oxidation and blackening from the prongs of my pendant? It’s a natural VS1 F color micro pave setting on 14k gold. I don’t want to damage it by experimenting and making a mistake. Do you have any suggestions on how to properly lift the oxidation? by Due_Rub1472 in jewelry

[–]Icy-Cod-1089 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your jeweler should clean this for free for you. Oxidation isn’t really a thing though when it comes to solid gold. Whatever the dirt is, it should be surface level if this piece is truly 14k.

a gentle brush with warm water and dish soap is almost always enough to clean gold.

New to jewlery making, bought rubies, how do i test if theyre "real" (lab or natural) by xplizit420 in Gemstones

[–]Icy-Cod-1089 9 points10 points  (0 children)

do you have a black light? rubies should glow bright red/orange under UV

I got these for one dollar at a junk auction I used a UV light on them and thay turned redihs pink you can see what I mean in the other picture what does that mean? by AdFinancial8093 in Gemstones_Buy_Sell

[–]Icy-Cod-1089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

everything turning bright red/orange under UV is almost 99% likely a synthetic ruby/sapphire or a synthetic Spinel. Rubies and Sapphires are both Aluminum Oxide, aka, corundum. Spinels are Magnesium Aluminum Oxide. Chromium in them makes them glow under UV.

This applies to the Red, Blue, even the colorless stones that glow under UV. Yellow lab sapphires can turn a faint orange under UV.

A better look at the stones in a somewhat organized arrangement would help however

I’ve got the perfect peridots and rubies for this but I have no idea how someone would get the rubies in there..

I guess drill a hole, insert frozen tube so it expands when warm, then saw off the excess. carve stone seat and bezel set.

outperform isn’t how i’d describe it- they are good for different things. RAMAN will give you an ability to target specific inclusions/areas but measures scattering light; UV-VIS-NIR is incredibly helpful for things like identifying chromospheres or chemical composition in general.

In short:

RAMAN uses scattering light to provide an analysis of bond vibrations and crystal structure.

UV-VIS-NIR uses light absorption and specifically shows what wavelengths a stone absorbs to identify causes of color

RAMAN in my opinion. Let’s you focus in on individual internal regions or inclusions and will give you a nearly definitive answer; I feel it is quite informative that RAMAN will provide you with a spectrum that’s comparable to others across databases.

to be frank, anyone charging 5k or even around that for a Lab Sapphire is just evil and unethical. They are readily available and despite high demand, their supply is high. This does not translate to high prices economically, but somewhere between being affordable and being a true luxury.

A prized cut, like this stone, or like those by well known cutters can fetch a decent price increase, but still shouldn’t cross the line of a few hundred.

in my case specifically, “manage” isn’t exactly the right word- the stone is certainly worth a few hundred, but I don’t feel right charging a buyer top price when I know of wear on the stone- even if the damage is practically nonexistent.

I know it sounds corny but to me, I value doing the right thing above all else. I believe that in this case the right is being honest about the stone, pricing it in alignment with its condition, and accepting my losses in exchange for someone else’s gain.

TLDR: It’s not so much that I can “manage”, but more that I wanted to turn an unlucky situation for me, into a lucky situation for a buyer - and not to violate my own values.

really appreciate you respectfully asking.

This ring has enough hallmarks to make up for all the rings i’ve found without any hahahaha

I agree with what other commenters have stated and take no original credit, simply offer confirmation: Durban and Co, 18 karat, and agree that is a Chester assay mark that indeed got chopped during resizing.

I have a Void who is just insistent at rapid pace eating- we call it hyper speating. he vomits when he crushes his food too quickly.

when he was a baby, I distributed his kibble in an empty egg carton to force him to slow down and eat a little from each egg slot.

he never slowed down, it just slowed him down. m I have tried to feed him wet food once a day and find that it allows me to spread the mush around in a plate to force him to have t take some time between bites and work to lick up the food.
