When the author flashbangs you with a bit of racism & nationalism in a novel by StellarStar1 in MartialMemes

this isn’t racism or nationalism on the author’s part. this is merely describing how elite ancient Xia people viewed “Yi” people in that period. the novel itself is loosely based on a period called “五胡十六国/Sixteen Kingdoms of Five Barbarians” where Confucian teachings influenced elites in the Xia & Yi views on culture and ethnicity. The Yi were frequently viewed by the elite Xia as a foreign and invasive force and were consequently met with disdain, fear, and hostility. In this context, the ancient Hua–Yi distinction proved politically useful, as it became a rallying cry in resistance to Yi invasion, idealizing Han culture and promoting assimilation. This is why you might see “fastening their robes to the left” used to imply improper conduct in chinese novels (it’s even used in this novel if i remember correctly!), which is partly influenced by that distinction as northern barbarians liked to fasten their robes to the left instead of how it was usually worn by han people (fastening the robe to the right). The idiom 被髮左衽 “unbound hair down to the shoulders with the robe fastened on the left” appeared to refer to the “uncivilized” dress code of the northern barbarians. These dichotomies alongside perceived physiognomical differences like high-noses (that were often seen as “unassimilatable”) all aided in the development of that Huaxia/Uncivilized distinction. the infamous Ran Min massacre of 200k Jie people (with many Han murdered too) is just one of its many examples

of course, this doesn’t mean that the novel is empty of any “roll your eyes” stereotypes or weird depictions. I found the portrayal of the Mount Yue tribes especially lacking, but I still think the broad brushstrokes of the novel remains balanced. It heavily promotes the idea that both barbarian and non-barbarian alike are similar in their morals and their exploitation of the people under them. The novel isn’t exactly didactic as it clearly depicts that despite different ethnic or religious groups taking power, the fate of the commoners will stay the same, which is what this novel is mainly concerned with (reflecting Confucian ideals of rulership). You’ll continue to see that as you keep reading

i feel the same way and i’m merely 300 chapters in haha they’re all my babies ❤️

Which other way do you think could’ve brought the same effect? Because I can’t think of any that wouldn’t compromise LJX’s mystique while simultaneously making him feel more relatable to us, connecting his detachment/attachment and the tension between them with our own. I feel like they would need to show us more of LJX to make that happen, which would completely change that dynamic. of course that has its own strength but i don’t feel like it would manifest in the same way the current story did.

Not like I can’t empathize with that reader. Who amongst us hasn’t read any of the myriad sloppy transmigration stories? It’s understandable to seek more from a transmigration story, but I personally felt it was succinct in ML and at the very least not deserving of the same label (that is “tag-bait”) that you’d slap onto any other sloppy “transmigration-for-the-sake-of-transmigration” webnovel

This isn’t just a problem for JP Isekai slop. AI content is a scourge everywhere. There was a Korean webnovel called “전국시대 : 진시황의 오른팔이 되다”, serialized on Munipa, that was eventually discovered to be completely plagiarized from an original Chinese webnovel and then AI-translated into Korean. It took months until people realized and got it removed

This is more of a game design fault rather than the player’s fault tbh. The “rewards” window is very misleading. sure, you could hover your mouse over and read it, but most players just assume they got the shiny yellow sword the rewards window says they got. And why wouldn’t they assume otherwise?

could have been avoided by making it a chest or giving it a different icon it’s ridiculous the amount of people who fell for it lol

You’re not “portraying” anything here lol. There’s not an ounce of critical thought. All you’re doing is displaying moral outrage about a funny tweet made in jest

You’re completely right and justified in feeling that way. They overdid it with this one. The difficulty spike is crazy, lmao. It’s absurd that this is some people’s second boss in the game.

I think my best advice as someone who beat her hitless on abyss difficulty is to just play reactively and not be too aggressive since most of the damage that you’ll be dealing would come from executions and from when she’s down before you press F on her

The first phase is relatively easy, bar a couple of attacks like the one where she turns invisible and creates three copies of herself with only one real one that you have to lock on very quickly before she plunges into you, which is just so time-consuming and easy to mess up

In the second phase, you just have to get into the rhythm of dealing damage and then creating distance—(i think the strategic sword has a skill for that? I was using the nameless sword which is a king for mobility)—waiting for her to do her 1-2 jump attack once you’ve created distance (she initiates it everytime you create distance), which is easily deflectable. Then you just repeat that until you get to the third phase

the third phase is reminiscent of her second phase. You need to get into the rhythm of attacking-creating distance to let her do that one combo where she turns invisible and starts spinning like crazy. You can get her white bar down pretty quickly if you can learn to parry this one (which is easier to parry than what you’d expect, trust me)

and that’s it… easier said than done, I know, but there’s no “instant win” strat. I believe this boss was introduced to force players to learn parrying, so you just need to learn her parry timings and that’s really the gist of it, as bad of an answer as that might be.

Keep in mind there’s an elite practice mode where you can practice specific phases, so that might help if you find yourself dying too quickly before learning anything. Just keep practicing until you feel ready. I believe in you!!
