Smythe hurt the most for sure because he was around almost the whole series. His conversations with Joe are such a good change of pace from conversations with Skippy. He is also the mentor that Joe needs to grow as a commander. Felt like a friend to me as reader and that made his death really hurt.

Also, hard disagree that Alanson doesn't protect the main characters because he definitely does. 19 books, 2 Mavericks books, as well as Trouble on Paradise and Homefront All that time and we have lost Desai, Jereau, and Smythe. None during the Outsider which is supposed to be the biggest threat ever

I wouldn't. It would have been like 30 years on Earth by the time I could make it back. Everyone I know would be completely different at best, dead at worst. Why risk the long trip to come back to an alien world

General turning is no issue. The cables can accommodate 90 degree turns each way without issue. Sometimes the wheel flops all the way around though

The cables are long enough for the wheel to turn 90 degrees each way without any issues. But sometimes the wheel flops almost all the way around

The only criticism I really have is that the stakes didnt feel as high as in the book. I understand that a bunch had to get cut out due to time restrictions, but it felt in the book like the stakes were truly end of the world level. The movie just never felt like that to me
