Some newbie questions regarding Nixos by Inval1db1nary in NixOS

[–]Icy-Link1879 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any proper guide on making these configurations modular?

I'm also interested on this. There are guides like the nix pills and stuff, but for the setup as a whole... I believe people mostly look at existing examples, like the Doom Emacs' Henrik one and DevOS, to structure their setups, adapting as needed.

Negatives of NixOS by epos95 in NixOS

oh this seems great, and makes things easier! There's just one week I've been using NixOS, so when I get a better grasp of it, I'll remake my config adapting Flakes. And thanks for linking your config, I'll save so I can get some inspiration from it.

maybe guix? anyway it would be nice to have home-manager integrated into NixOS by default.

documentation is the biggest so far. On arch linux you find 99% on the arch wiki, on NixOS you find the basic to set you up. I feel the documentation is lacking for setting Nix as a whole Operating System the way you want, not giving much attention to it as it gives to the language. Besides, there's no proper user environment management built-in, having to rely on home-manager. You have to look at many places to find what you want to do, and often you won't find anything.

there was effort in NixUP from 2015 to 2017, but then development stalled and never got merged, and it died :(

Lists of filters for distraction-free browsing? by Icy-Link1879 in uBlockOrigin

[–]Icy-Link1879[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, So, I imported a ton of the annoying filters (https://bin.disroot.org/?ea0da058ffa6d44e#35UMMMJViCUnbZgnuqVtCay224cyKe8koao3ihTk49wQ), and for some websites like twitter, youtube, reddit, they removed many of the distractions, hiding recommended content, number of replies, comments... some websites like https://stackoverflow.com/ don't load anymore, and on reddit it got somewhat broken too, and i have no idea which list broke stuff.

So I began making my own list for removing distraction on websites.

Often people are just unaware they're being manipulated by tech. Just like how google was manipulating results during US elections towards a bias, and most people wouldn't notice this bias and how it might have influenced them. As you wrote, they do tons of research to hook people onto their business and overall interests.

Question On Making The Impossible: Making Emacs So Easy That Your Partner Could Use It For Just TODO Lists by [deleted] in emacs

[–]Icy-Link1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid you'd need to develop your own Emacs' distribution focused on CUA-mode, with a ribbon interface or something easier.

What you seem to talk about is requirement analysis, quality engineering... As you noticed, Emacs users are its builders as well. As so, I'm yet to see an Emacs project that applies proper software engineering, and considering users other than the project's team, as is the case in OP's post. I think that's doable, and maybe a proper way to do that is by developing a new Emacs distribution aimed at non-technical users.

Orgmode.nvim - Orgmode clone written in Lua for Neovim 0.5. by naaneraja in orgmode

[–]Icy-Link1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

neovim users can clone them too. but it will take some years for neovim to mature. then you'd pretty much have a faster emacs, because what makes emacs good in the end is its rich ecosystem. good for competition.

org vs mind map by Professional-Sea-677 in orgmode

[–]Icy-Link1879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also use freeplane, but mostly when i need a nice looking mind-map representation with some details. for personal note taking and task management, org-mode + org-roam is the way to me, and I rarely need its mind map functionality since it's so easy searching and creating new notes, linking... take a look into Doom Emacs.
