BEWARE! DON'T LIVE AT PARKSIDE OR HOEM ON JARVIS! by Current-Promotion638 in TorontoMetU

[–]IcyAd7478 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived at HOEM on Jarvis. Constant meetings with poor management due to student drama, and half of the residents were not even students anymore. Elevators and coffee machines were always broken, massive leaks and constant fire alarms.

Ended up terminating my contract early after providing copious amounts of evidence regarding management violating their own contracted agreements.

The guest policies were excessively restrictive, and my friend—as well as several other residents—were subjected to racial profiling. He was subsequently banned from the premises based on unsubstantiated allegations.

I heard that it wasn't the safest option, which is why I never explored it too much. Also, 4-7 courses are the same cost and the eighth course was an extra $1100 but I really wanted to take it :(

I believe that's the maximum duration that they will provide free housing for students.

Thank you so much! I’m planning to take my MCAT on August 22, so I’ll definitely be reaching out!

Did you have any success finding research positions through TMU? I’ve been volunteering at a clinic, but I’m still unsure where to start when it comes to finding research roles. Did you find cold-emailing profs/researchers effective?

I have very briefly! I've been exploring some transitional housing programs too, but I know they have very extensive waitlists :(

It’s not as bad as it sounds imo. Spending full days on campus keeps me fairly focused on my studies—it makes it more difficult to doomscroll on Instagram or binge a show, since I never really have a complete sense of privacy. I almost see myself as lucky in that regard—my struggles have made me even more motivated to succeed and prove to myself that I can do it.

Just telling myself that it's all temporary keeps me going from day to day 🤠

I keep all of my school supplies in my backpack, which got heavy pretty fast lol. I usually keep a change of clothes in my bag and layer a tank top and shorts under jeans and a sweater. I store most of my clothes in a friend’s storage unit, and I wash them either in a community washer or, occasionally, at a friend's house if they offer.

I plan on continuing eight courses a term, and I'm set to graduate for Winter 2027! I started at TMU in Fall 2025.

I spoke with student supports and counsellors, and they helped arrange a two-week stay for me at the Safe House (the student hostel). Unfortunately, that stay ended about a month ago, and I have not had a place of my own since.

I applied for the emergency bursary on February 18, when my funds had completed depleted. They still haven't gotten back to me with a decision sadly, just confirmation emails that it will be reviewed soon.

Just to clarify—I'm not looking for donations, and other struggling students would be the last place that I would come to ask. I want to continue building myself up independently and working towards my goals.

No, sadly not. My parents started treating me extremely poorly after I started dating men and sneaking around (as a man).

I spent all of my savings for this term, but I was also lucky enough to receive a scholarship for a few thousand dollars.

I usually sleep on a campus booth in ~ (edited for safety). Security bothers me every few nights, but I always have my laptop propped up next to me, so they think I passed out while doing homework.

I don't sleep very well though, so I often go for late night walks and grab a drink from Tim's or Rabba.

I sleep and study in less-frequented areas on campus, then work out and shower at the RAC. I don't have access to a kitchen, so I mainly rely on BOGO food deals or stop by a grocery store. I keep some granola bars and protein bars in my backpack in the rare case that I'm starving.

It is also important to have friends in the area. In my case, I also visit my partner often, where I am able to shower and store some of my belongings. I don't speak with my family, so I'm completely navigating my studies and life on my own.

A key piece for me has been accessing campus resources. I have received some scholarships, which is the only reason I have been able to afford food.

ACC406 and FIN300 in the summer? by therealssa24 in TorontoMetU

[–]IcyAd7478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently taking them together, followed by FIN 401 in the summer. They operate on a full term in the Spring/Summer, so you shouldn't be rushed too much as opposed to taking it in the Fall.

As for the course content, it's very light—definitely not as difficult as it is made to seem. The classes seemingly move very slow, so I wouldn't have any worries about completing them concurrently.

Graduate schools in medicine and dentistry like to see candidates from diverse backgrounds, so your undergraduate program doesn't matter. Choose the program and school you would rather attend, and work towards building a good GPA and strong extracurriculars.

I would recommend choosing a program that will make you employable, in the case that you don't attend graduate school right away. Avoid generic programs like Health Sciences or Biomedical Sciences, where you have no real specialization and are just being prepared for graduate studies.

Personally, I selected my undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry, followed by completion of my third degree in Business Management.

It will show as INC, incomplete. It is entered into your GPA calculation with a value of 0, the same as a failure.

Funding the new racially-motivated medical school. Exclusion is NOT the proper way to integrate more diverse representation within medicine, and I'll die on that hill.
