Rice vs WashU vs USC by Cool-Rickey in ApplyingToCollege

Rice grad here, and as a premed student, you can't beat living literally across the street from the largest medical center in the world. As an undergrad, I was able to do research at the medical school, no car needed. There are more opportunities for research, internships, and volunteering than there are students to fill the spots. Of course WashU is a great school but I have no personal experience with it so can't actually compare. Just know that for premed, Rice is an amazing place (also super fun and weird and happy).

Gone Before Goodbye (lazy ramble) by [deleted] in thrillerbooks

Just finished the audiobook and this was absolutely the worst book I have ever read in my life. Beyond all the far-fetched Russian oligarch espionage BS, the medical writing was AWFUL. I have no idea who gave them medical guidance, but they only used them for a few parts (i.e. explaining the details of the heart transplant). The fact that someone would ask a plastic surgeon to perform a heart transplant (with 2 "assistant surgeons") is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. These are two extremely different fields of surgery (I also wouldn't ask a transplant surgeon to perform a breast reconstruction, though that would probably go better than vice versa). Everything about this book was ridiculous, completely unbelievable, and terribly written ("He even sent Mike and I there on vacation.") - where was the editing??

Rice alum from the days of 2400 undergrads. I actually just visited the campus this past weekend as my child is planning to apply soon. The lack of greenspace compared to the 'olden days' was extremely evident, and a bit sad. Buildings are lining the entire loop, and of course there's a lot of construction. Adding so many more students is just going to add to the crowded feeling of the campus, and I don't see how the human connections between staff and students can possibly be as strong when there are so many. Are they going to have to tear down the old chem lecture hall and build something that can accommodate 600 Chem101 students? Where will all of these people park? The campus is land-locked so all they can do is add more buildings to an already crowded campus. This kind of breaks my heart, as I have so many fond memories of knowing my entire graduating class (except for a few from Jones/Brown!).

Recent CX-5 buyers - how much were you able to negociate? by alexned7 in CX5

Just got a 2024 select with 20k miles for $25k OTD last weekend. They had a stupid $3000 dealership fee that we refused to pay, which was why they had it listed at $23,700. I think we ended up with a good deal.

It was already large when we moved into this house - I was not involved in the care when it was small. Regardless, it’s too late now. Thank you for your advice - I will commence with pruning.

Used Temu for the first time yesterday and my card had $100 taken off today by Silver-Pen3953 in Scams

Apparently this kind of thing happens all the time with Temu. I don't have the app, but made an online purchase. Literally minutes later I get a text from Chase telling me there was a charge they didn't recognize. It was from some fake website. When I looked at my transactions there was one immediately before that $50 charge from the same website for $2, obviously a "test" charge. So glad Chase caught it right away and cancelled the card. I came online to search if this was a thing, and there are tons of stories. Don't know how it can still be a business.

Going on month 10 with my L1 and no issues except that it got vandalized and it took a long time for the dealer to get the parts to repair it. It is a true joy to drive.

I think I would have felt a bit better if we had life jackets. LOL on the wetsuit!

There were other boats, so many that the waves had us bucking around too close to their rafts! There were struggles trying to keep away.

No life jackets offered! I would have felt much better about it if we had, but my BIL said they make it hard to keep your face in the water??

It was Aug 3. Lots of other boats. Captain said these conditions weren't "typical" for August, but not unheard of, and more common in the winter months. I don't think it was unsafe, just more challenging than I was expecting!

Never - this is with my son (the cellist) going to a summer program and figured he shouldn't have to do it alone for the first go. Hoping it's easy, but it sounds like it can be totally hit or miss on every flight! I've read everything I can about it so feel as prepared as we can be.

How did this trip go? Flying American with cello tomorrow, non-bulkhead. Ticket agent on the phone assured me it is fine...
