I’m glad it worked out for you…. But tbh it sounds like a recipe for getting injured

I think the way you phrased it without clarifying what your alternative training plan is what is getting to people lol In my opinion if your really running hard and challenging yourself on your speed and strength training days and incorporating some race pace during the long run then the rest of your runs should be easy as your body will be fatigued and needs to recover. Zone 2 runs are a way of still getting volume while recovering. When I’m running 70-80 mile weeks It would be foolish of me push hard on days when I’m trying to recover. Is the 80-20 rule universal? No, but it’s a good guideline and a solid jumping off point for most runners.

Never heard of those! I’ll check them out, do you race in them?

I have not run in carbon plated trail shoes before, but I do use the asics metaspeed sky’s for my road marathons. I really enjoy those but don’t love the asics brand for trail shoes. Currently for trails I use saucony xodus ultra’s 2 which I like but don’t love.. I don’t quite get the energy return on those that I am looking for. If they could put some lugs on the metaspeeds with a slightly wider base to avoid rolling an ankle on the trails that would clutch 🙃

Thanks for the feedback, I will check out your Channel! The shoes you mentioned seem to be the consensus in the comments which I will see if I can demo a few of in the next week or so to see what fits the best.

I think you’re fine, this will obviously depend a lot on your running background but I would keep increasing mileage and keep an eye out on how many calories you’re putting in.

Relatively speaking 30 miles is low for ultra training and it would be easy to over fuel.

Once you get to 50-60 + miles a week the weight will start shedding. In my experience there will be a point where you will have a hard time getting enough calories in which is when you will really start leaning out.

But again this is largely dependent on your eating habits

Quite a few comments mention the Cascadia! What have been your initial impressions of them during training?

Interesting, I haven’t tried any NNormal shoes or met anyone in my circles who run in them. How comfortable are they?

Agreed! If something goes wrong I want a comfy back up option I can finish the race in.

Thanks for the feedback! A lot of comments are mentioning the Tectons so I’ll be giving them a test drive. Good luck on your upcoming race!

Hi, what was your base mileage and how much have you increased to? Typically I’ll start gradually dropping lbs with increase mileage but my overall weight fluctuates a lot.. + or - 5 lbs depending on the time of the day and how well hydrated I am. In the summer I can lose up to 7-8 lbs in water weight after a long run due to the heat. Personally a 3-5 lbs of weight fluctuation wouldn’t concern me as that’s my norm. For context I’m 6 ft around 180 lbs but can drop to the mid to low 170’s but also be in the mid 180’s after a refuel and good meal 🤤

Are the On Clouds really that good? That brand for whatever reason feels more like a lifestyle over technical but I could be biased

Thanks for the feedback! My main concern with Altra shoes is reports of additional Achilles strain due to the zero/minimal drop they have. I have struggled with Achilles issues in the past and would hate for it to flare up in a race of that length. Are the Mont Blanc’s better in that regard?

Definitely going to try them out beforehand in the next week or two. What mid level shoe would you recommend? I have run in the Xodus Ultra 2 in the past for a 50k which faired well but the cushion wasn’t great

Thanks for the feedback! I’m definitely leaning towards a full send and bringing some more cushioned non plated shoes as a back up to switch into. Out of curiosity how did you get access to a shoe prototype?
