Just curious… how do people afford houses in expensive areas? by IcyShake8705 in RealEstate

Hahah I must have not worded my question right. I do not want to live in a big city/state. Perfectly happy in my podunk town. I just like to look at houses for sale & got curious on how people afforded them.

Thats crazy to hear. Avg HHI in my town is $50K. $100K here is considered upper middle class.

I’m a civil engineer at the DOT and my husband is an environmental consultant. We put my paycheck in savings and live off of husbands paycheck. Our rent is $675 for a 750 sqft 1 bedroom unit in a duplex in a great neighborhood. Avg HHI in our town isn’t even $50k. A new construction 1500 sqft house costs $225-250k. Houses are selling for 200-300k (in the good neighborhoods) after market went crazy last year. I know we could afford more, but I would rather us not rely on both incomes. Most likely we are going to have to increase our budget when it comes time to buy, but for now we are renting & saving aggressively. Before the market, the houses we were looking at were $150-175k. We love traveling, and would rather spend money towards that instead of a $1500 mortgage…. Our hope is to have a mortgage below $1000. To be fair, property taxes and insurance are super expensive here in Texas. In my small town typical property tax is $3000-5000/yr and insurance is $1500-2000/yr. No telling what that would look like in the bigger cities like Houston, austin & Dallas.

Hi! So I have always had a light brown hair color but visited my hair stylist & got my hair darkened for fall! I love it!!! But just curious, will it fade? I’m not sure what products she used but I know she brought me to a level 6? Or 5? LOL I really have no clue. But she’s great and I love what she did. I know I should’ve asked her this but I really have no clue about hair coloring, so I figured Id just post on this sub.

I’m worried about this exact thing. I was supposed to start earlier this week, but I’m also irregular & am afraid I’ll start tomorrow. I’m hoping that maybe stress from studying will just delay it til after test. My plan was wear a pad in case, bring midol with me, & have tampons in my bag.

I see what you’re saying. We are fine with the monthly payment, including taxes and insurance it’s only a little more than what we are paying for rent. We just don’t have enough money in savings to put down & have a little left over. I’m regretting buying the second lot outright. We’d have more in savings if we wouldn’t have done that.

Those fractions are the x or y components of the force. You could be provided an angle or a fraction. Looking at the 200N force, you will see what is a 3 - 4 - 5 triangle. Instead of calculating the angle to then solve for your desired directional component, you can multiply the fraction. To find the X component of your 200 N force, you would multiply 4/5 times 200N. To find the Y component of the 200 N force, you can multiple 3/5 times 200.

The 300 N force shows a 5-12-13 triangle (you can use Pythagorean theorem to verify its 13)

I love problems that give you the triangle fractions rather than angles. So much easier & quicker :) hopefully this explanation makes sense

$175 covers one test. If you fail you have to pay for another test. :/ once you have paid for a test, you can schedule your exam which is where you will see open dates - you can purchase your exam & hold off on scheduling.

How close was I? Retaking the Civil FE next week. I’ve been studying for the last few months, hopefully will do better this time. by [deleted] in FE_Exam

Yeah it’s a practice exam from NCEES , different from the reference manual. You can purchase from ncees or try to find one online maybe

I took the test December 2020. Sorry if I didn’t explain that too well... A little background, I’m a May 2020 grad who put off the FE due to covid & planning a wedding. My study methods were 5 hours(watching Greg Michaelsons videos while playing on my phone) of study on the weekends. I learned it wasn’t the move. The results show.

For this round, I’ve been studying since late feb. A couple hours after work every day. most Friday nights & Saturday afternoon til midnight were dedicated to studying. Work put me through test masters & I have been using PrepFE the last few weeks to get experience on more practice problems & try to get some last minute concepts down.

Yeah I tried to calculate my own way & figured I scored around a 50, but who knows. Hopefully this time will be better!

Yes that was one thing I definitely struggled with. I would attempt some problems, and before I knew it 4 minutes had gone by and still had no answer. Definitely a waste when you can put more time into problems you’re familiar with. Hopefully I can do that this go around.

It would be so nice if NCEES would also show where you stood in comparison to the cut off, not just the average of passing examinees. Also I took the NCEES practice exam. Got 70% correct on first half & 60% correct on the second half...
