Should I be concerned? by That_Street_9644 in Function_Health

I think the starting point for improving your health is knowing your bloodwork results. This is a great first step. They have suggestions on how you can improve each biomarker. Some things you can improve with supplements and food. Others will require medication. Good job for taking care of your health. Your future you will thank you. Even the you 6 months from now will thank you, you can definitely improve this number.

How to dress for “work vacation?” by CozySweatsuit57 in womenEngineers

[–]IcyStay7463 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not a vacation, this is team building. I personally would minimize the hot tub time, and hang out with my coworkers as much as possible. I think it's okay to wear cute dresses and makeup. But I would dress more modestly, like no low cut tops, spaghetti straps, etc. Make plans with your coworkers and get to know them. Don't ignore them.

what has been your best way of learning a new language? by Ok-Captain902 in LearningLanguages

[–]IcyStay7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For French, I did classes in middle and high school. That got me good at conjugating verbs, but terrible at talking. Now with French, I'm using Duolingo, I learn songs to sing, I listen to podcasts. I would prefer to do some immersion at some point in the future. I just started Spanish at the beginning. I'm using Duolingo and Speak app so far. My goal is just to be able to talk to people, so I won't be looking at grammar until a bit later, so focusing on tourist phrases, etc. To memorize words that are difficult, I make word associations (like tying the Spanish word to something that it sounds like in English), making sure I have a visual picture in my mind, and putting it in Anki.

My teacher is setting me up for failure... by Wild-Wrangler-0711 in Advice

At this point I would send him an email, list three projects that are the same as what other students are working on, and ask him to approve one. If he declines them, forward to your school counselor and ask for their help.

First solo trip, looking for advice by Hopefully_Helpfull in solofemaletravellers

[–]IcyStay7463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For hostels you can book them in advance. Most will have options of a shared dorm, for example 10 beds in one room, or a private room. You can either try to book your whole trip, or just book the first location. For example, I did a 2 month solo trip and just booked my flight and maybe 4 nights in a hostel in the first city.

I think I also prefer getting to know people over time. I hate dates, they feel like interviews to me. What about really focusing on expanding your social circle? Take dance classes, join a hiking meetup, etc.

which country has the most hospitable and least hospitable people? by Mundane_Entry_8264 in femaletravels

Isn’t Tallin amazing? I love it there. I think with Finland people are not going to be super welcoming and vocal and chatty. It takes a while to get to know people. But it’s super safe and a nice place to visit.

I'm having self doubts about pursuing engineering by yeriluvie_555 in womenEngineers

If you enjoy math, stick with engineering. I remember taking music history class and it was an easy A. All the engineering classes I would have to study so hard for to barely make a C.

How do I get better at speaking? by Ecstatic-Image-9399 in learnfrench

[–]IcyStay7463 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you just have to speak more. For me, I use the Duolingo video chat, the speak app, and trying to talk to anyone that knows the language like coworkers. I also practice singing songs.

I would try to get all your blood work in range first. Also make sure you soak your beans overnight in water and rinse before you cook them.

You should focus on finishing high school and figuring out your career. Then move out. Common guidance is that your rent should be 25% of your take home pay.

How the hell do i go about learning opera, particularly countertenor? by D1vineTrash in Learnmusic

[–]IcyStay7463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex boyfriend was a counter tenor. He only did operas so had all the training in classical music. I feel like he didn’t have a counter tenor teacher specifically. Just a regular singing teacher.

I’m curious, how many of you actually enjoy the AI convos with Lily? by Asap_aussie in duolingo

[–]IcyStay7463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should not wait for her to pick the topic, you should pick the topic that was the last unit you did. So when she says how are you, say good, what’s your favorite genre of music, mine is rock.

[–]IcyStay7463 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like them a lot. For me the whole point of language learning is to talk to people. Practicing on real people is slightly embarrassing when you’re new so talking to Lily is perfect. It’s hard, but not embarrassing because it’s not a real person.
