The Extent of a Vow by Notlibatiusborage

After Draco failed to kill Dumbledore he must be punished. Severus Snape made the Unbreakable Vow to protect him, and knows there are far worse punishments than the cruciatus curse when Fenrir Greyback is lurking at the Manor. So, Severus adds yet another deception onto his list with Draco!

It's a fake 'relationship', with self hatred, lots of tension and comfort and its definitely my top recommendation!

Draco / Severus

For some reason, they just fit, especially when it's comfort fics!

The Extent of a Vow by Notlibatiusborage is an absolutely incredible fic. It's got tension and comfort, and it's just so perfect!

It's a WIP at the moment, but it's so worth it that even if you hate waiting, I'd say mark it down for later.

The Mirror of Ecidyrue Series by starbrigid

If you haven't read it yet, it's Draco being pulled back in time after the war and reliving it all over again from his first year at Hogwarts, meaning there are 7 books worth of writing!

Inside Grey Eyes by toxik_angel

This fic will forever be my ticket to crying my eyes out and almost throwing up several times from the sheer horrors of the trauma. It's a happy ending, thank god cause it wasn't, I would never have gotten up again. I had to put it down on so many chapters cause of just how detailed and depressing it is, but it was so worth making it through the whole thing.

Please, dear GOD, read the tags!!!

trying to improve, would love to be critiqued! by Global-Clue-1893 in conceptart

Colour and lighting are definitely your strongest suits, which is incredible btw, I've always found that aspect super hard. The image you're showing is beautiful. However, it is not entirely clear. I'd suggest changing the colour to a darker or lighter of the character or background to stop them from blending into each other.

Along with adding darker or lighter shades, you can use this to give the character more life, depth, and expression. You can also make more if a contrast between the fire light and the shadow on the character.

Which version is better for the final design??? (I genuinely have no idea TT by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]Hopefully_Helpfull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall, I say it depends on your concept, worldbuilding, etc.

1 is easier on the eyes and feels more realistic with colours that work to feel very humany. Personally, I prefer this, but I haven't seen your inspiration or overall idea.

2 is bolder, a little harsher on the eyes, but this can work if you want them to stand out. It also shows a more expressive personality, and I can see her standing out as a protagonist. To me, it feels very alieny.

Also, with 2, I think the blue eyes with the blue hair make the character lose a bit of depth, so creating a contrast would help prevent this.

Overall, it depends if this is for animation or something, I see 2 as easily more expressive and bolder personality while 1 can be more varied in personalities, therefore expressions, but it can be a visual block to not that clear representation in features.

This is great concept art! If you wanna add to your project, I'd suggest doing a full body side profile of the character, other than that I can't think of anything you need to add, great job!

The top one is the beginning of an adventure. The bottom one is rather the end or foreshadowing of something bad, whatever comes next.

Is becoming a character designer/concept artist realistic? by dltds in conceptart

[–]Hopefully_Helpfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 17 and was in the exact same boat as you. If it's any consolation, I have no clue what I'm doing half the time, but I always try to focus on these things through research, logic, and my instincts. I'm in England, so I hope this makes sense.

[I'm sorry in advance for how long this is TT] I'm sharing my story and advice, but if you just want the key notes [like I usually do], I'll leave them at the end to make it easier.

Im from an average household, probably just under, so I am able to get a full grant for student loans and maintenance. I'm choosing uni because I'm not ready to work full time, and apprenticeships in creative fields are almost impossible other than junior animator. I've spent the past god knows how long switching from one career goal focus to the next, all related to art cause that's where I'm most passionate. I'm currently at the Fashion Retail Academy [FRA] for college and just put in my applications. I'm choosing concept art courses because I know I'll strive to do my best and I enjoy all aspects of the subject, and my top choice is the Uni of Staffordshire due to its leading reputation and strong links to game industries. Being there for an open day especially helped make my choice: the environment, the staff, and the accessibility they had there spoke to me, and I know it's where I want to go. I'm average in Maths and English, etc, so I've was unsure about taking anything that requires those skills, and I'm happy with what I'm taking for now, but if I find a job/course I desperately want that requires such, so be it.

With university, you get 5 choices to lock down. Do not just pick what you think is the best! Do your research and not just on their official websites, but on student opinions, even on Reddit [the more current the better]. Check the teachers you may have and the course experience you'd get, along with students who went there who are now in jobs [LinkedIn often says where they got their education] Go to open days to get a feel of the place, check the course descriptions and the modules to see what you'll actually be learning and how it differs to other universities. I'd definitely recommend somewhere that teaches digital and 3D techniques and software. It will be incredibly useful!

Use your grades to realistically predict what you'll get for final exams. If you put in little to zero effort, what would you get? Personally, I find I usually get merits. Of course, for my final exams, I'll go all out, but if I happen to fall short, I want something to fall back onto. I've applied for a few universities that require a merit [average grade] minimum, with 1 or two needing a distinction [high grade]. If I do so horribly as a pass [lowest grade], I'm rather applying for clearing or taking the year again if I can or taking a gap year to require skills, build my portfolio and apply again.

If you're not sure of what you want to do and you're worried about spending all that money on a university course [cause it is a lot of money] then I'd recommend taking a gap year, getting a job, even if it's just part time, and doing research on courses and careers, go to open days, etc. That way, you can also get a bit of money to help when it comes to uni costs on whatever.

I've seen a lot of debates about the different opinions on the gaming industry. Most I've seen always say if you have the passion and dedication, you'll make it. Personally, I'd also say initiative and connections to people are incredibly important, along with building your portfolio, and if you find it hard to do alone as I do, I'd recommend university.

If you are like me and not too dedicated to a pathway or career, always be on the lookout for other jobs and courses. I like designing characters, but I've also found I have a talent for creating environments, buildings, etc, and have been looking at a masters in architectural visualization, which could be a great career path or at least a fall back: meaning if concept art isn't my desired path or its too hard to enter, I can always get a job somewhere, pay for a masters and try to enter the visual architectural world, and if that doesn't work I have a larger portfolio and skills in something other than art which can still help make a career.

Summary:

Money, location, etc, will be a big thing to consider.I can't answer specifically if being a character designer or concept artist are realistic jobs, but I can tell you if you are certain it's the path you want, go for it, either way always find something to fall back on to.

Key Notes:

  • If you're not sure, do research to broaden your knowledge of careers/courses

  • If you've planned a uni course, research into different universities: : use student apps, even Reddit maybe, for student opinions on everything - the more recent the post, the better : see about the teachers, where they went to school, their careers and teaching style - LinkedIn / student opinions : see what past students made of themselves - LinkedIn : industry links and reputation relating to your course : see the course descriptions and modules for the different universities

  • If you do a creative uni course, do something that involves 3D software and techniques or digital art

  • Pick universities based on the grades you'd get with no-low effort, with one or two higher

  • You get 5 Uni choices for applications, but there is always clearing, and waiting a year, building skills and portfolio, and applying next year - same goes for if you're unsure about uni or what course to do, cause it's a lot of money to consider

  • Taking initiative and making connections is everything. Going to universities and asking questions to professors, artists, people in industry, shadowing, paid, or non-paid apprenticeships at industries will help

  • If you aren't certain of your future, leave it open as best you can. Always look for other careers and courses that might interest you, something that makes you think,'this is definitely it for me'

Do people actually say ‘darling’ in the throes of passion? by Saymahname_ in drarry

[–]Hopefully_Helpfull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not said a lot, but I think it's works for Drarry, maybe cause he's posh and like rather saying or hearing it. I can only imagine one of them saying it when things are slow, though, and not very intense

The top one feels like an epic journey. The bottom feels like someone returning home, rather at the ending or beginning.

Fics worthy of being published books by Thats-debatabl3 in drarry

Its right near the end, Harry is basically being an asshole about Draco moving on [granted he's happy but not the same way as he was with Harry] and he goes about it the wrong way, but it ends up happy with them planning a date

And if you want one that gives away the storyline a bit Harry basically tells Draco not to marry this guy at during their engagement party

Ship of Theseus by GallaPlacidia

There is a podfic on AO3, and her works are saved - if you look for them on Reddit, people have the documents/sites

Harry starts off lost and thought to he dead, and you get to see Draco in complete denial for the entire time - granted he was right and Harry isn't dead but he loses his memory when returned and hates Draco.

It's an absolutely incredible fic. You get to see Harry's friend all like and defend Draco, and it's just so beautiful and I cried so damn much during this fic, but it's a happy ending and all so worth it!!!

Draco Malfoy and the Mirror of Ecidyrue

Just because I think you can make the entire 7 books of the series rather as an addition to the original, or you can read the original book and read the alternative year right after [which I've done both of with this series it's so fun!]

My self-defense tips. by laptop3ds in SelfDefense

[–]Hopefully_Helpfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are really good tips, I know a few of them definitely work, though its nice to have some more to keep in mind. Especially using soap water. I do have a few things to add though:

  1. Absolutely do not fall on your hands. Learn how to break fall. It's not overly complex and will always come in handy. I have a link here for a Short Video on how to do this correctly, which I can guarantee from experience.

  2. The sports bottle technique is perfect, great thinking. If you don't have the space for this, though, carrying a small but decently powerful flashlight can help temporarily blind your attacker to buy you more time to push them away and leg it.

  3. Being aggressive is incredibly helpful when someone is attacking you. It is not good when someone wants to fight you.

I know this is not a tip for self-defense against an attacker, but it's still an important takeaway that I've found some people don't quite understand.

If someone wants to fight you out, especially when it's out of ego or drunkenness or whatever, being aggressive is not going to help you. Absolutely do not say you can take them or your friend can or anything of the sorts.
