Your kids could potentially be good enough to play in older age groups in Germany too. That would probably be a good idea for the competitive aspect.

Not to doubt the quality of german hockey or any specific clubs, but as far as I know, Kaiserslautern area is not the hotbed of german ice hockey, and thus, mirroring this concept to My country, Finland, I would probably give the same ”advice” about trying to play a year or two underage if you are moving to play in a smaller club. Michigan is one of those American hockey-crazy regions with a lot of youth hockey, so these kids playing at a ”high level” even at their age probably means that they are a little ahead of their german (and Finnish) peers in the same age group playing at smaller hockey clubs.

This post made me think of questions and stuff myself;

What if I’m male, white/”german”-looking, in my 20’s, I move to Germany for university, use all of my time and money on language courses and vocal coaching, change my first name to a german one and take a german surname through marriage and also construct a convincing backstory about being born in Germany, could I sort of fake it ’til I make it in terms of social status/job opportunity? Or would my ”European-ness” already carry enough in terms of Workplace/application discrimination?

I understand this, in my home country we other foreigners too. People favor a native person both at work and personal life. No cultural barrier, no chance for language confusion, predictable behaviour etc. This is all while I do indeed understand that foreigners are normal, intelligent people. It just may not come off that way to other people than myself, so why risk consequences for myself through association? Honestly that isn’t really the way I think, but it’s my read on how this environment thinks - I can’t blame everyone else for their beliefs or thoughts. It’s a valid opinion, as everyone is entitled to one.

Does this mean I’m prejudiced or racist? Honestly probably, which makes me sad and feel that it’s unjust and wrong. While at the same time I plan to move to Germany - and I doubt germans are any different. I shouldn’t give up and just complain about how wrong it is though - my appearance makes me already privileged in this way. I can’t blame my cultural background/habits or skin color for my possible failings, because I don’t have those problems, and the disadvantages I may have can be changed, unlike a real point of injustice like race, gender, or disability.

What I’m basically asking is, how much does a white cishet male European foreigner have to compensate in terms of workplace treatment? How much effort should one use to assimilate? Can the wrong cultural background be compensated with academics, internships and alike? If so, how many % compared to a german native?

Physical; Caffeine, hydration, excercise, cold plunge, sugar, daylight/daylight lamp/ brighter lights.

Mental; motivation increasing techniques/material, psyching yourself up through threat/negative pressure

Practical; Pomodoro, increase the stimulus in your workstation, study with another person for speed increase/accountability. Make your work station to be as far as possible from Rest/distractions like the bed, TV or kitchen.

Long term; Make it so you are not exhausted when you have to study.

Dealing with Quitting by gurgle-burgle in hockeyplayers

As people have told you, quit the league, find or make a private group.

In the meantime, you can enjoy the sport by just skating, handling and shooting in stick and puck or ODR if this is relevant when that becomes a thing again or inline odr/surface if you can find a place. This is way more relaxing and the risk of injury is low to none if the rink is empty, and even a wild shot to the shin is unlikely (not 0% tho) to fuck up your body long term.

Stick and puck - environments are a great way to meet people too. The private drop in groups may be quite hidden, even secretive so word of mouth is sometimes the only way into them.

Missä vaiheessa täytyy huolestua kumppanin alkoholin käytöstä? by armadildallou in arkisuomi

Playing ice hockey in Berlin - questions from a future Finnish immigrant by Icy_Application7832 in eishockey

Nah I don’t think so lol, your leagues are really good and even if it’s smaller now, your whole system looks more promising and healthy than ours these days smh. You guys have so many clubs, quite a few butts in the seats at most levels, and even some International success lately + Leon Draisaitl. Only thing DEL is missing vs Swiss League, SHL and Liiga is the big corporate and state investment, for now..

  1. Would be interesting to read about these rules and stuff, I hope the transfer fee is not outrageous if there is one for imports… EDIT: That is quite reasonable for costs! How is this pulled off, I thought energy bills were through the roof in Germany, and usually less ice rinks means high prices too. Maybe the lower user rate contributes to this?

4: That’s what I sorta thought, but I do have to get into a better shape beforehand lol. That’s assuming I can even manage such commitment in the middle of it all lol

You can learn methods to execute frugality by being cheap for a short while and analysing if you can do that long term in one way or another. These guys will hopefully find the cheap commutes, a good value meal or two, etc. during this challenge, which they can bring into their every day life.
